• A request went out 5/25/06 requesting PI input by 5/31.• Received responses (16) from all PI/Instrument groups.

• Summary of Requirements:• No wet lab, dry ice, or dedicated instrument lab space requirements.• Various shipping requirements provided.• Sal: LN2, compressed gases, and chemicals required.• Praia: No LN2 required. Gases (e.g., helium) and chemicals to be shipped via surface.

• If you have additional support requirements (e.g., IT, shipping), please let ESPO know ASAP.

Cape Verde Site SurveyMay 29-Jun 3 2006

• Conducted site survey of Sal and Praia airports, hotels, and ops center, and local area.

• Assessed basing sites for radiosonde balloons and SMART-COMMIT trailers.

• Held meetings with INMG, airport management, AGE providers, transportation, communications, etc.

• Approval granted by Cape Verdean government to conduct mission.

• Site survey report to be prepared.

Where on Earth……

Cape Verde IslandsGeneral Info

• Republic of Cape Verde. Nine principal islands located 300 miles W of Senegal. Capital, Praia.

• Official Language: Portuguese.• Currency: Escudo ($1 USD= 86 CV Escudos)• Visas: Required for all visitors.• Telecommunications: DSL and mobile phones available

through national monopoly (Cabo Verde telecom). Phones are GSM (900) with SIM and phone cards available for purchase. Country code for Cape Verde is 238.

• Time: Cape Verde standard time is UTC/GMT -1 hour.• Power: 220 V, 50 Hz. • USG Per diem: $109/80 for Sal Island, $112/74 for Praia

• DC-8 Ops: Amilcar Cabral Airport• 16.4˚ N latitude, 22.6˚ W longitude, about 20 km• 12 miles north of the city of Santa Maria• 2 km from the island capital, Espargos• Santiago Island (Praia) 125 miles to the south.

Travel & Accommodations

• Hotels• Hotel Riu Funana, Santa Maria, 238-242-9064.• Full service, inclusive resort.• Wireless available in lobby (cost and bandwidth in work).• 12 mi south of A/P, 2 mi to town center.• Payment: Visa credit card, cash, or wire transfer.• Rate: 80 Euros/night ($103)• ESPO (Sue Tolley) submitting room reservations.

• Need names/dates by June 12, 2006.

• Transportation.• Shuttle bus from hotel to airport (starting Aug 12th).• Rental cars very limited and very expensive ($100/day).• Taxi:

• From Hotel to A/P - 1000 CVE.• From Hotel to town - 200-300 CVE.

Travel & Accommodations - 2• Air travel.

• Some seats available on DC-8 and C-5.• Provide request to Sue Tolley.

• Commercial Air• Currently, there are no U.S. carriers flying directly to Sal.

• South African Airways currently has a direct flight from Atlanta.

• TACV, the Cape Verdean airline, has weekly service from Boston.

• There are connections from Dakar (through Praia).

• Best (cost) connection via Lisbon (TAP or TACV to Sal).

• Visas.

• Sue Tolley can submit for visa on arrival for U.S. citizens.• Will need passport info, etc.

• Visa can also be obtained through CV Embassy in Washington.

• Health and Safety• Do not drink tap water; buy bottled water.• Take whatever prescription and OTC medications you might need with you.• The sun is hot!

Lab Description & Support

• Lab Space• Identified for all locations.

• Layouts to be provided.

• Please bring any required power adapters, transformers, etc.

• Network• Labs have 0.5? MB minimum shared connection.

• Ethernet connection plus wireless.

• DHCP to be provided (details still in work).

• Please be sure to have virus protection SW on your computer.

• Administration & support provided by ESPO.

• In-field data archive provided by MSFC.

Security & Access

• Badging• Badging required for lab and ramp access.• Sue Tolley collecting required info for badge request.

• Name, DOB, PPN, etc.

• Copy of passport.

• Electronic photo (jpeg).

• Security briefing required upon arrival.• Badges must be displayed.

• 24/7 access.• Reflective vest required while on ramp.

Shipping

• All gasses, cryogens, and chemicals will need to be shipped.• Dry ice availability TBD.

• ESPO will ship DC-8 instrument & aircraft support equipment from UND to deployment site via airlift and will return the equipment to UND at the end of the project.

• Not handling surface shipments.

• ESPO (Q. Allison) will be contacting you regarding your shipment.
