NAMING CONVENTION FOR POSITION TITLES PRINCIPLES PURPOSE
Position titles perform an important function in organisations; they provide an indication of the area of responsibility as well as where a person sits within the structural hierarchy. It is therefore important that a common nomenclature is utilised throughout the University; it also supports equity and assists to ensure that positions are classified uniformly.
SCOPE
These principles apply to all staff positions within the University.
PRINCIPLES
In maintaining a system of common titles the following objectives are fundamental:
the system be as broad as possible to encourage future career broadening rather than perceptually “locking” individuals into a particular role by virtue of a position title;
the system be as simple and consistent as possible, rationalising work unit and state specific arrangements which do not assist ready identification across the University;
identify the position in a way which is clear and recognisable;
indicate the main purpose and function of the position, by adding one or two descriptive words to the titles below relevant to the level of the position;
be simple and free of technical jargon;
indicate the relative level of the position within the University’s organisational structure;
be gender neutral;
appear consistently on all documentation for the position;
the system reflects the classification structure and its inherent relativities. New or variations to existing position titles are to be approved by the Director, People and Culture in consultation with the relevant Executive Staff member where the position is located, with final approval by the Vice-Chancellor and President where any significant change may be proposed. Professional Staff The following are the professional staff titles for the major job families within the University. Throughout the system of position titles, the term ‘Assistant’ is typically used, where appropriate to a position classified at Level 1 to 3. The title ‘Officer’ typically used at Level 4 to 6 and the title ‘Senior Officer’ at Level 7 or above.
