Recent NEWS public presentations included talks by: 1. Dr Mary Seely on the process, values and results of assembling the

Nomination Dossier of listing the Namib Sand Sea as Namibia’s second UNESCO World Heritage Site [30 July];

2. Dr Eugene Marais on the World Heritage inscription processes; potential future World Heritage Site proposals and public involvement [13 August];

3. Peter Bridgeford on vultures in Namibia, especially regarding their local decline and the way forward [29 August]; and

4. Dave Joubert on modelling vulture numbers using different variables to estimate population dynamics [29 August].

Certainly the most important outcome of the Namib Sand Sea listing is the international recognition and strengthened protection of this truly unique and sensitive Namibian landscape feature. Other potential World Heritage Sites

include the Fish River Canyon; Brandberg massif and Welwitchia Plains, albeit each with its own strengths and weaknesses to be addressed before realisation. The vulture presentation and modelling exercise certainly brought home the vulnerability of these uncharismatic, yet extremely important birds, currently in dire straights mainly due to poisoning (intentional and accidental) and require immediate effective protection to ensure their continued survival in Namibia. All the above mentioned presentations were extremely well attended, indicating the overall public interest (and need) for environmental and scientific stimulation.

Dr’s Mary Seely, Eugene Marais & Rodger Swart (top; l-r), involved with the Sand Sea World Heritage Site listing and Dave Joubert, Barbara Wayrauch (NEWS talks coordinator) and Peter Bridgeford (bottom; l-r), after the vulture presentation.
