Chart 1: The Composite Index for Building Plans Com-pleted

• The Composite Index of Building Plans Completed (Windhoek,

Swakopmund, Walvis Bay and Ongwediva) for January 2020 stood at 73.4 basis points compared to 88.6 and 87.4 basis points recorded in the preceding month and January 2019, respectively. This represents declines of 17.2 percent month on month and 16.0 percent year on year.

• The decline of 17.2 percent on the monthly basis were mainly reflected in value of completed buildings for Walvis Bay, Windhoek and Ongwe-diva.

• The nominal value of the Building Plans Completed during the month of January 2020 amounted to N$ 89.0 million as compared to N$ 107.5 million recorded in the previous month. While, the value of Building Plans Completed for January 2019 stood at N$ 106.0 million.

Chart 2: Building Plans Completed Index for Walvis Bay

• In Walvis Bay the Building Plans Completed Index posted 43.9 basis

points in January 2020 down by 83.8 and 2.6 basis points recorded in the previous month and January 2019, respectively.

• The decline recorded when compared to the preceding month was mainly reflected in the nominal value recorded for residential building plans completed.

• The nominal value of Building Plans Completed in Walvis Bay was N$

16.6 million in January 2020 compared to N$ 48.3 million recorded for December 2019.

Chart 3: Building Plans Completed Index for Windhoek

• In Windhoek the Building Plans Completed Index stood at 53.3 basis points in January 2020 compared to 95.0 and 144.4 basis points rec-orded for the previous month and January 2019, respectively. These are declines of 43.8 percent month on month and 63.0 percent year on year.

• The month on month and year on year declines were mainly due to the drop in value recorded for residential building plans completed and walls built on existing units for residential buildings, respectively.

• The nominal value of Building Plans Completed during the month of

January 2020 amounted to N$ 20.6 million compared to N$ 36.7 mil-lion recorded for December 2019.

Chart 4: Building Plans Completed Index for Ongwe diva

• In Ongwediva the Building Plans Completed Index posted 10.8 basis points in January 2020 compared to 72.1 and 2.2 basis points recorded for the previous month and January 2019, respectively. This translated into a decline of 85.1 percent month on month and an increase of 399.5 percent year on year.

• The month on month decline was mainly due to the drop reflected in value for the additions and alterations done for residential building plans while the increase recorded year on year was attributed to the improvements for additions and alterations of residential buildings.

• The nominal value of Building Plans Completed in Ongwediva stood at

N$ 0.7 million in January 2020 compared to N$ 4.8 million recorded in December 2019.

• In Swakopmund the Building Plans Completed Index posted 133.5 ba-sis points in January 2020 compared to 46.4 and 85.0 basis points, reg-istered for the month of December 2019 and January 2019, respec-tively. This translated into increases of 187.4 percent month on month and 57.1 percent year on year.

• The increases reflected in January 2020 when compared to December 2019 and on the annual basis, respectively, were mainly due to the rise in nominal value for residential buildings plans completed.

• The nominal value of Building Plans Completed in Swakopmund during the period under review was N$ 51.1 million compared to N$17.8 mil-lion recorded for December 2019.

Methodology

Data Sources: Selected local authorities from the following town councils:

Base year: 2015. The values has been referenced to 2015 data as from November 2019.

Calculations of index: The NSA monitors the value and number of building plans completed for 24 local authorities on a monthly basis. Four of these towns that accounted for 70.3 percent of the total value of all buildings plans completed in 2015 have been selected for the index compila-tion.

Conversion: 1 basis point = 0.01 percent
