All the pipe bursts that have occurred in Walvis Bay this week only exposed how fragile the current water supply system is, letting the harbour town run dry for a whole day.

looking back at 2011, Walvis bay had a serious water shortage due to damage

caused by water flowing down the kuiseb river. With the exceptional rainfall predicted for Namibia this coming summer, residents wonder if they should prepare themselves for a similar crisis.

“Gay Marriage” Legal Advisor Sets Record Straight

Staff Reporter

A recently published article by the Namib Independent, highlighting a perfectly legal procedure that affords

same-sex couples entering into a civil union in South Africa the same legal and civil rights as traditionally married ones, has come under fire, though not for reasons that one would

expect. Coastal and national readers from

all walks of life have been incredibly vocal on social media platforms, supporting the activities carried out by Heidi rossouw, but the media themselves and in fact the law society of Namibia have been less accommodating. The local media have elected instead to question rossouw’s credentials and character, while the law society have issued a press statement in which they state to have no knowledge of rossouw as being admitted as legal practitioner in Namibia or that they have any knowledge of her firm

being registered with them. despite bringing attention to these two facts neither one has any legal relevance whatsoever to the legal consulting services offered by rossouw.

in the article in question we specified that a local lawyer, Heidi rossouw, offered a service helping those who sought to avail of the service. subsequently, a letter from Mrs N. steinmann, director of the law society of Namibia, was addressed to the editors of three newspapers, including one national and the two coastal newspapers, although locally the story had been carried by only one paper, The

Namib independent, and nationally by a weekly paper.

in the letter, which Mrs. steinmann asked to be published, the law society indicated that the “lawyer” in question is, according to their records, not admitted as a legal practitioner in Namibia, nor is there a firm 'Heidi Rossouw Legal Office' registered with the law society of Namibia. in both instances the law society is perfectly correct.

Do the ‘Cat Pose’ for Feral Kitties

Lavrenty Repin

Cats and yoga do not normally belong in one sentence – I know, for instance, that nothing in this world will make my lazy flexible feline friends do a yoga exercise, not even the popular yoga “cat pose”. However, to show them how it is done, coastal residents will have the opportunity to do some fun, healthy yoga this Saturday, in aid of the Swakopmund Cat Protection Society and their mission to help feral cats, who have been

growing in numbers in Swakopmund.

The idea is spearheaded by south african Chantelle Meyburgh, who specialises in yoga, healing and animal communication. she sees it as part of a way to give back to the community, and help animals that do not have a home, as well as bring awareness of these unfortunate creatures. The event is entirely free, and the support for cats is all donation based – whether it is cat food or money, whatever you can bring to help the homeless cats of

the coast will be appreciated. even more exciting is that everyone is welcome. even if you have never tried out yoga before, and have no idea what it means, all that you really need to know is that the benefits of yoga are endless.

local yoga lover Morne Venter, said, “It's more than physical; it embodies spirit as well, and that is why it is so cool – it's a spiritual practice, not an exercise.”

indeed, yoga can boost your immune system, not just through exercise and breathing control but also on a cellular level, a Norway study says. Migraine sufferers can ease their headaches through the ancient art and Harvard research found that yoga improves sleep quality and helps insomniac sufferers. besides that, it alleviates depression, increases sexual drive and promotes flexibility for better healthier blood circulation. There are literally thousands such studies that indicate the tremendous health benefits that the at least 5000-year-old practise provides.

The course instructor will be Caroline Pajewski, who

has been teaching yoga in swakopmund for almost ten years. she explained, “The popularity [for yoga[ has been growing for years at the coast. There are three or four teachers now in swakopmund, teaching different styles for different ages, which is wonderful. especially in the last couple of years, the public has become more aware of yoga.”

Caroline explained that she will cater for the beginner level, so it will be fairly simple and everyone can join in the fun. she also has yoga mats for those in need on the day.

“This is a great opportunity if you haven’t tried it before,” Caroline stated. “it’s for free, we have a lovely dynamic group, and of course you can support the cause. Otherwise it will be a fun day all around, some people will even bring their children along to play.”

Yoga Catz will be held at the last resort Wellness Centre in swakopmund on saturday at 9am and will continue through to 10pm, ending off with a musical performance by Harms schrader.

NamWater has reinforced their water systems in the kuiseb river.

“a lot of water has a lot of power and force, so there is no guarantee that NamWater’s pump and pipes will withstand a large amount of water coming down the river. a slow steady flow, however, should not cause any damage,” burger commented. Well said, yet the question remains how Walvis bay will cope in such a situation - considering that while one water leak is being fixed, two new ones pop up.

“Our current water system is about 40 years old, some parts date up to 60 years,” burger told the Namib independent. Thus it is obvious that the exponential growth rate of the town places a lot of pressure on the present water system.

“We recently did some upgrades and the water pressure has been a bit higher since then, causing weak points in the system to show themselves. Usually we are quick to fix them, taking no longer than two to three hours. The problem with sunday was the depth of the buried pipe,” burger said. He continued to explain that most water pipes are buried up to one metre in the ground, however, this specific pipe lay two metres underneath the surface.

“at this depth the sea water pushes through and complicates things. in addition, since this is one of the lowest points, all the water in the system runs towards it once the supply is cut off,” burger said. “This water

then needs to be drained before they are able to fix the leak, which took a long time.”

if heavy rainfall should cause damage to NamWater’s water station in the kuiseb river, similar measures as in 2011 will be implemented.

“Water supply will be shut off for certain periods of time, mostly at night, so that the pressure can build up,” burger said.

according to the engineer, it is way too expensive to replace the whole water system from a to Z.

“We are busy with a master plan, where all new residential areas will get an upgraded water supply system. in addition, we are also looking towards additional water storage capacity and bulk water supply from NamWater,” burger disclosed.

at the moment, Walvis bay consumes around 16,000kl per day. The

Municipality of Walvis bay plans a 5% increase of water consumption per annum. in order to keep up with the increased water requirements of the town, a new link line from the swartzekuppe-swakopmund line will be constructed in 2015. Thus Walvis bay will be supplied with water from two independent sources, eliminating any water shortage scenarios.

While the Municipality is trying their best to keep pace with the demands of a growing town, future water interruptions are inevitable.

“While we fix the problems, water will be unavailable for a few hours. residents can store some water away for such situations, however they need to make sure that it does not become contaminated, too old or stale. Cooking or chlorinating old stored water is recommended,” burger concluded.

as a practicing lawyer. although rossouw does hold a law degree (llb), obtained at the Northwest University, and has for a number of years practiced as a successful and at times high profile lawyer in south africa before returning home to Namibia, she or indeed anyone with a legal degree may not refer to themselves as a lawyer, legal advocate or attorney until they have been admitted as a legal practitioner in Namibia and have been admitted to the law society of Namibia – this according to rossouw.

it is the Namib independent, who through a lack of understanding of this routine process, referred to rossouw as a lawyer in our headline.

“This mishap was a simple and innocent misinterpretation of the difference between the actual meaning of the words ‘legal advisor’ and ‘lawyer’ as viewed by legal fraternity and not through the lens of a layman. The fact that she was referred to as a lawyer by us and not legal advisor detracts from the fact that according to rossouw, she is perfectly within the remit of the law in delivering the service that she advertises and offers,” said the paper’s editor Gareth amos.

in an interview rossouw stated, “The second element of the letter, which refers to there being no listing of a firm named Heidi Rossouw Legal Office on the NLS membership is a moot issue as the legal consulting services we offer do not call for us to be listed with the society and at no stage was an assertion made that our office was registered with them.”

additionally, rossouw stated categorically that representatives of the law society of Namibia not only have been in her office but also that Mrs. steinmann and her are professionally acquainted and have personally engaged with one

another, on several occasions, on matters relating to Rossouw’s office and the legal consulting that they offer their clients. The wording in the letter may be interpreted in a manner which indicates that both the law society and Mrs. steinmann have never heard of rossouw, which according to rossouw is simply not factual.

The facts indicated that while she is (purposefully) not registered with the law society, the society does indeed know of rossouw and the services that are on offer from her offices.

“i honestly understand why the society have made the statements they have made in regards to the paper referring to me as a lawyer. However, i do not understand why they have not then also written in the same letter that they are fully cognisant of me and my business and the perfectly legal consulting we provide. They know what services we offer and also understand perfectly that not only do i choose not to be admitted, at this stage, but that the legal consultancy services i provide do not call for me to admitted,” stated rossouw. “This letter may leave one with the impression that they are speaking of someone of uncertain character of whom they have no knowledge at all,” she added.

Matters worsened for rossouw when a local newspaper printed elements of the letter under the headline “Credentials of Walvis bay ‘lawyer’ who weds gay couples disputed”. The article closes indicating that the newspaper could not contact rossouw for comment, “as their number is not listed in the directory or online,” it states. instead, the article lists the contact details for the law society so that members of the public may contact them if they think that their lawyers have questionable credentials.

“i do not understand how they could not find my contact details or details for my offices when I advertise with them every single week,” said a furious rossouw. she stated that she has been running weekly adverts since February, which are on most occasions presented on her business letterhead containing all her information - including her personal cell phone number.

“i pay by cheque every week, which has my business name on. How can they say that they cannot contact me but are able to take my money on a weekly basis? This article has done immense and perhaps irreparable damage to my person and business and one would expect that they would have the courtesy to get my viewpoint before printing the story,” she fumed.

in addition, despite the relationship between the law society and rossouw, they too elected not to contact her or the Namib independent for clarity regarding the headline prior to issuing and printing the letter. Had they done so, they would have discovered that rossouw was at no fault for the accolade afforded to her and that the error lay squarely upon the shoulders of the editor of the paper.

“an email or a call from either the newspaper or the law society would have prevented this damaging report that has smeared my name,” said rossouw.

What has been lost in the affray over the incorrect usage of the semantics of the word lawyer, is the great work that is carried out by rossouw in all aspects of her legal consultancy, not the least of which is her progressive stance on human rights issues in the face of controversy.

A Look into the Strange World of Freemasons

Lavrenty Repin

The Freemasons Society is one of the most secretive, widespread organisations in the world, and it is no surprise that the silence of what happens behind closed doors, in large churches and buildings worldwide, has sprung up countless conspiracy theories and has given the organisation a menacing and power-wielding reputation.

The truth about the notoriously hidden society is often difficult to determine, as its origins, its mission and its belief are all heavily disputed.

What is not disputed though, is that the society is ever-reaching, and has property and members (which tally over five million) worldwide, even, as it were, in the small, common and little-known town of Walvis bay. Members of the world’s oldest and largest brotherhood fraternity are described as “privileged” and have included names like George Washington, benjamin Franklin, Winston Churchill, ronald reagan, Mozart, apollo astronaut buzz aldrin, Henry Ford and anders breivik (responsible for the 2011 mass murder in Norway) – so why are they here and what do they mean to achieve? To have an idea, we need to look at their history.

The immense secrecy with which the all-male organisation meets means that nothing said about them is for certain, yet if all they really are, as they claim, “nothing more than a brotherhood of like-minded individuals who meet regularly for spiritual and intellectual enlightenment” then why, begs the question, keep it all under wraps? That is why many believe that the freemasons have immense political and corporate control, that they affect the monetary system and shape history to suit their own agenda. These allegations are also coupled with rumours of satanic rituals and sacrifices only intensifying the mystery behind the society.

some trace Freemasons origins to as far back as 967 b.C, in the building of king solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem, in which an unknown secret lies, and also link them to the knights Templar, monks who took up arms in 1118 a.d. in order to protect Christian pilgrims and discovered treasure in king solomon’s temple that made them incalculably rich, sprouting a secret society from the abundance of wealth. Prosecuted by threatened king Philip iV of France they went into hiding and, here the conspiracy begins, apparently remerged in 1700 to orchestrate the French revolution as revenge.

However, a conservative theory suggests that Freemasons were simply skilled stone workers building castles and churches in the Middle ages who wanted to keep their knowledge of the trade secret and create a monopoly in the field,

sprouting trade guilds, secret handshakes, code words and other signs to distinguish one another.

after 1700, Freemasonry was becoming highly fashionable; their approach was of religious tolerance and intellectual discourse. suspicion arose and Freemasons were ostracised in europe. Portugal set a death-penalty for anyone practising in the society. Moving to america, the organisation included the founding fathers of the american constitution, and was very active in the american revolution. The american dollar, still in circulation today, was branded with the Freemason “all-seeing eye” sign (pyramid with an open eye), which is still unexplained to this day.

Throughout history, Freemasons took their secrets to the grave. Yet although they claim not to be religious, their rituals have strong spiritual overtones, based on ultimate rulers. The punishments for revealing the Freemasons’ secret (which is reportedly that the God of the Universe is Jahbulon, a mixture of a Hebrew god, an ancient Canaanite fertility god and an ancient egyptian god) include tearing out one’s tongue and heart, burning one’s bowels and slicing the top of one’s skull off.

Freemasons’ links with the illuminati are not unfounded; the illuminati were established at around the same time. allegedly, they wanted to create a new world order and partnered with the Freemasons to achieve this. Historically, the partnership failed, but some believe that the organisations continue to work together, wielding power in politics and commerce.

There is no real factual basis to any of the conspiracy theories against the Freemasons. The organisation claims that their motives are for the betterment of mankind – the internet is littered with these explanations by current Freemason members; yet if this is all that there is to it, the veil of secrecy seems out of place, as do the high profile names that to this day enjoy its secrecy.

What is for certain is that Freemasonry often attracts men who are successful entrepreneurs and those of political affiliation. The secrecy of the high-profile meetings, coupled with rituals that promote brotherhood, can open doors for corruption and favouritism – perhaps rather than a “new world order” organisation, Freemasonry is a foundation for powerful greedy men to quietly acquire more personal wealth.

Or it may be nothing more than a fraternity club for men who do not know how to grow up. The only fact that seems certain is that the great strength of this order lies in its concealment; and if Freemason members vow under threat of death their entire loyalty to the organisation; how, then, can any Freemason be trusted, particularly in public office?

Tanya Calitz

Walvis Resident, Christof Horus Gerhard Nantes (23), was found hanging from a tree by shoe laces in the Ministry of Finance’s courtyard on Tuesday. The Namib Independent rushed to the scene after receiving a call from a local resident about suspicious activities in and around the Ministry.

Nampol’s detective Chief inspector, Erastus Iikuyu, confirmed that the deceased was discovered by a local resident when they visited the Ministry’s office this week. Prior to his alleged suicide, Nantes was reported missing

by his girlfriend the weekend before his tragic death. However, police are not suspecting any foul play at this stage. according to police, no suicide note from the victim was found. according to media reports, Nantes’ girlfriend started getting suspicious when he did not return home on saturday evening and failed to answer any of her calls. she then reported him as a ‘missing person’ to police on midday sunday. The incidents leading up to his alleged suicide are not yet clear, but according to reports Nantes seemed upbeat when his mother saw him last. Nantes was a casual worker at Freddy’s Fishing Company, as a fisherman on the crab boat kaveke katimila.

Local Fishing Industry Biggest Seabird Killer in the World

Tanya Calitz

A distressed Ministry of Fisheries (MFMR) insider told the Namib Independent that something has to be done about the alarming seabird situation out at sea. The official claims that Namibia has the worst seabird protection record in the world, and causes more preventable seabird deaths through its fishing industry than any other nation in the world.

The paper decided to look into these allegations and found that the situations is as bad as the Fisheries official claimed it to be. speaking to former albatross Task Force (aTF) Project Manager, John Paterson, he confirmed that the Namibian demersal long-line fishery has one of the highest rates of seabird mortality in the world. The problem is that Namibia has no specific Seabird Protection act to enforce the conservation of these birds.

“Namibia has no specific legislation requiring that mitigation measures to reduce seabird mortalities are put in place. However, MFMr are currently in the process of adopting a National Plan of action and developing seabird specific regulations that will enable meaningful seabird conservation success once they are in place,” said Paterson.

even though Paterson could not give the exact amount of bird killings caused by the industry, he has a good idea of what the dire situation looks like in terms of numbers.

“The demersal long-line fishery kills more than 15,000 seabirds annually, 80% of which are white-chinned petrels. The demersal trawl fishery kills over 5,000 birds annually, 60% of which are albatrosses. These estimates are based on at-sea observations of mortalities during all four seasons,” Paterson confirmed. Despite efforts by the aTF and the one

or two companies that have taken precautionary measures by installing tori-lines to scare birds away, a lot more needs to be done by local authorities and local fishing companies to ensure the conservation of our seabirds.

The above was confirmed by a report released by current aTF Project Manager, sarah Yates. “The long-line and trawl fisheries together are responsible for the accidental mortality of around 30,000 seabirds per year, the majority of which are white-chinned petrels and yellow-nosed albatross. These alarming figures represent one of the most lethal fisheries in the world in terms of seabird by-catch. despite this high level of mortality, there are currently no regulations in Namibia that make the use of seabird by-catch mitigation measures compulsory.”

What can be done?Paterson says that the best

Practice Mitigation needs to be adopted by fishers in the demersal long-line and demersal trawl fisheries. As a precautionary measure this should be done in the pelagic long-line fishery and the pelagic trawl fishery (horse mackerel), too. This would include setting long-lines at night, using a minimum 5kg weight, using bird scaring lines and pushing the weights into the water instead of letting them get pulled in (for the demersal long-line fishery). For both pelagic and demersal trawl fisheries, two bird scaring lines must be deployed

during all setting and fishing operations. On pelagic long-line fishing, bird scaring lines must be used as a bare minimum, although they could be used in conjunction with heavy swivels placed in optimum positions or safe leads.

Not all is lostlast but not least Paterson says there is hope. “Namibia is making great progress towards dealing with these issues through the National Plan of action seabirds and drafting new regulations. MFMr has some good staff

who are working for change. The industry is now starting to take seabird mortality seriously as well, and some companies are being proactive. The aTF is doing great work in this regard and the support of birdlife international and the rsPb in britain is invaluable. Funding from the Packhard Foundation for making steel weights is a huge bonus.”

Unfortunately sarah Yates, current aTF Project Manager, could not be reached by time of going to print to weigh in on the discussion.

Why Namibians are Losing Jobs to the Chinese

Lavrenty Repin

There has been an ongoing debate over the fact that Chinese nationals are getting jobs at the expense of Namibians, especially in the low-skills sector. To combat this growing trend, we need to understand what makes Chinese workers more lucrative for businesses, why they seem more capable and what our local Namibian workforce is missing.

China, when compared to countries with similar institutional quality and projected growth, is noted to exceed in one key area: productivity gain. in China, it is (on average) five times that of its peers. This is not a new trend. in 1895, an american missionary in beijing noted that Chinese people often worked from dawn to dusk, seven days a week. even today, a typical teacher in China works roughly 12 hours a day, seven days a week, teaching 20 different classes.

One reason for this culture of hard work stems from the religious background of

Confucius, who developed a spiritual doctrine that has influenced Chinese population for over 2500 years. it promotes a culture of frugality, hard work, and respect.

but hard work, stone-cold discipline and obedience are also part of the national ethic and national governance, which are still based on communistic principles. according to a study on Chinse work ethic by bricks Magazine, an investment business platform, government policies affect culture (whether intentionally or not), which in turn affects productivity gain. China has had a high annual economic growth rate of approximately ten per cent for about thirty years, which the site labels as “an economic miracle that few will dispute.”

The study further indicates that there is “a positive association between a more authoritarian cultural environment and productivity gains in the emerging countries” and even asserts that “the educational policy should allow the school to have more authority over students’ learning and discipline.” These examples

are all evident in the geo-political and social structure of China, where schools instil discipline, Government instils authoritarian obedience and a large market as well as a large population motivate competition. Furthermore, the study finds that “decades of poverty and famine under Mao’s communistic rule (1949–1976) made people extremely motivated to work hard to make money.”

Today, a large number of Chinese have no alternative than to work tirelessly. While along the coastline a capitalistic approach has been promoted, the inland bulk of China remains a socialistic, poverty-stricken area, where most businesses are under state control and the average Chinese must work to make a living, and must work hard if he is to find a workplace in a country of over one billion people.

This historical, religious and political background has instilled an abundant work ethic into the Chinese workforce. a work ethic is defined as the attitude towards work, especially the belief that work is good for man.

Closer to home, a study titled “a comparative analysis of the Chinese and south

african work ethic,” compiled by various rsa Universities found that “it is a recognised reality that there is a substantive “negativity” in the work ethic of the south african labour force, possibly in relation to historical and cultural factors. The Chinese work ethic is diametrically opposed to that of south africa.”

The study held discussions with Chinese workers in 2010 and arrived at four primary schools of thoughts: Chinese workers (in south africa) have “a firm belief that hard work will bring desired results; pride in personal accomplishments and hard work; fear of embarrassment or shame in case of failure; and immense patriotic pride in China and its achievements.”

The study further read that “it is the present authors' conviction that none of these apply to the south african labour force, and that most certainly could be partly responsible for the economic disparities between the two countries.”

a local study by a student from the Polytechnic of Namibia (“exploring the impact of work ethics on specific workplace practices in the ministry of Home affairs & immigration”) declared that

the perception is that “the ‘take-it-easy-mentality’ and lack of urgency attitude of most civil servants has led to unsatisfactory performances, and has tarnished the overall image of the public sector.

The study focused on work ethics of employees at the Home affairs & immigration Ministry, yet it is safe to assume that these findings correlate accurately with the general attitude towards work of many Namibian employees. it concludes that the work ethic of these civil servants is abysmal in all sectors. according to the study, professionalism, integrity (vs. corruption), leadership, customer service, efficiency, dependability and initiative are some of the areas where appropriate ethic is nearly non-existent.

While the civil sector continues to create jobs for Namibians, the ethic of efficiency is not promoted, as is evident in pictures sent to us from an unsatisfied reader who noticed how only two municipal workers were digging an area, while the rest stood and waited for their turn – even though there were sufficient shovels. With such poor performance and unwillingness to “go the extra mile,” it is easy to understand why some private companies find it beneficial to employ Chinese nationals.

The bottom line is that Namibian employees need to implement a serious and devoted work ethic if they want to compete with the rising number of Chinese immigrants.

EBH Walvis Grants Wage Increase

Elgin Brown & Hamer (EBH) Namibia is pleased to announce the signing of its wage deal with the company’s bargaining unit, an event which marks an extremely positive conclusion to the wage negotiations. Increases between seven and 11 per cent were agreed on for Paterson A1-C5 up to foreman level.

The negotiations were concluded in a conciliatory and collaborative

manner on 21 august 2014. The signing ceremony held on 28 August 2014 represents a significant milestone for management-employee relationships within ebH Namibia.

Hr Manager for ebH Namibia, Patrick Chizabulyo, commented: “as the management of ebH Namibia, we are enormously pleased to have reached such an amicable and equitable wage agreement. it is indeed a testament to our commitment to increased levels of mutual

understanding and tolerance within the organisation, with a view to enhancing the ongoing reconciliation process going forward.”

bargain unit employees, in the absence of a valid recognition agreement, were represented by an interim workers’ representative committee appointed after a formal internal election process. The interim committee was mandated by the majority of ebH Namibia employees to engage with management in negotiations for the 2014 wage increases.

The subsequent wage agreement, in which differential wage increases of between seven and eleven per cent were granted across the board, resulted in an overall increase of 11 per cent to the company’s monthly wage bill. The wage increase applies to (Paterson) job grades a1-C5, up to foreman level.

“The management of ebH Namibia has always aimed to be competitive in the national labour market, which is one of the reasons for our reputation as a preferred employer-of-choice in Namibia,” stated

Chizabulyo. “We also place a substantial emphasis on both local job creation and skills development, which we believe has helped to create a stable workforce of motivated individuals. This, in turn, has resulted in a significant growth period for the company over the past year, boosting our capacity to contribute to both the local and national economies.”

ebH Namibia embraces an operational ethos of ‘one team, one goal’ in meeting the requirements of the international shipping industry. The company aims to foster a sense of pride in its employees when it comes to offering quality marine repair services to this demanding sector.

“The success of our 2014 wage negotiations is a shining example of the spirit of co-operation, which we strive to achieve within the organisation. We are grateful to our partners in this bilateral relationship – the workers’ representative committee and all our employees - for the positive spirit in which these negotiations for wage increases were conducted,” Chizabulyo concluded.

Racist Book in Local Library? The Golliwog

News

Opinion Piece by Siglinde de Villiers

Even though the Namibian Constitution leaves no room for demographic terminology, it is interesting that a children’s book featuring a Golliwog-looking character has been found in a coastal library. Initially the Golliwog started out as a unique work of art depicting an innocent hero, but the inherent nature of man has sadly transformed it into a derogatory term for people of dark-skinned features.

The Golliwog was easily distinguishable by its black skin, eyes rimmed in white, red lips and frizzy hair. The character was designed by Florence kate Upton, who illustrated children’s books in the late 1890s so as to pay her tuition. in her books, Golliwog was a friendly character with a kind face,

a product of the blackface minstrel tradition. Upton failed to trademark her character, and soon the Golliwog grew wings and became the generic name for dolls and images of similar type. it became a popular children’s toy and was incorporated into many aspects of british commerce and culture. However, later Golliwogs were slowly being depicted as sinister villains and that is when they started to become contentious racial figures.

after Upton’s book was printed, the term ‘golliwog’ or ‘wog’ became a slang term for black people worldwide. as the golliwog went viral, it became more and more offensive. according to a historical report, by the 1960s the term ‘golliwog’ and the dolls were under increasing attack. seen at best as racially insensitive and at worst as racist and vicious, golliwogs were gradually

removed from public life. in the late 1900s, many institutions that used the golliwog for their marketing strategies were prohibited from using it and even the toys were banned.

surprisingly, today the heated debate about golliwogs continues. While some see it as a cherished cultural artifact and childhood tradition, others feel that it is a symbol of racist stereotyping and an unnecessary reminder of the ongoing influence of a racist, colonial past.

Nevertheless, today it holds little of the same power. saying that any image, or even mentioning a golliwog, is racist has not solved racism problems, despite the efforts made to ban the golliwog.

in our modern cultural climate, we should not be worrying about racism as such, but the idea that people allow words, phrases and images to trigger and bring out our inner racist attitudes and inflict emotional wounds upon others.

Coming Soon – Namibian TV Shows Filmed at the CoastSiglinde de Villiers

Previously, talented youths in the Erongo Region had to depend on foreign institutions in order to develop their skills in the multimedia industry. However, the launch of a new content provider based on the coast, Veesion TV, will change the de rigeur of coastal society.

Veesion TV has worked very hard during the past few months to establish an office at the coast.

Michael Uraih, CeO of Veesion TV, proudly stated, “We are Africa’s first online linear 24 hour TV station.”

in essence, this means that they will be running scheduled content online, accessible by anyone, anytime. in being a content provider, other broadcasting companies will request content from Veesion TV to fill their television channels.

“We will be showing a great variety of programs,” Uraih explained. “These include educational, e n t e r t a i n m e n t , motivational and

series, in short: there will be something for everybody.”

Granted, internet access is expensive in africa, but Veesion TV has planned for this.

“We have partnered with a company, who is developing programs that will allow us to stream our content much faster and at a lower bandwidth, making it cheaper to view.” Uraih disclosed.

Most of the content for Veesion TV will be produced here at the coast by Namibians.

“We are not limited to using people at the coast for our content, but we primarily came here to give them a chance to show us what they got,” Uraih explained. He continued to explain how Veesion TV wants to create a platform to boost and develop local talent.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Namibians, because our content will also be run by TV channels in Canada, the Us and europe,” Uraih said.

at the moment, Veesion TV is busy filming a five or six episode series that was written and produced here at the coast by

Namibians. “We are very excited about

this because it will be the first time that Namibian content will be viewed all over the world,” Uraih exclaimed. beyond the series, Veesion TV plans to do a full length film.

“We want to see Namibian stories, and the country is full of stories. Thus we invite people with scripts to come to us,” Uraih said.

in the next few weeks, coastal residents can expect to see a lot of filming going down.

“do not be surprised if you are told that this street has been closed for the day due to filming,” Uraih quipped. In addition, Veesion TV plans a major launch in september, featuring local artists.

“We will have more details closer to the time, but interested persons are welcome to check our Facebook page, all information will be posted there,” Uraih said.

Originally, Veesion TV is a

Canadian company, however, they have decided to plant their roots in africa. “Our main office will be based in Walvis bay, but our reach spans the whole country,” the CeO added. Uraih continued to explain how the office in Walvis bay is intended to be their major centre in africa. “We will be collaborating with all other african countries from here.”

“i get sad when people underestimate the level of talent in Namibia,” Uraih commented. “so we want to provide a platform where the youth can showcase its talent. it is our intent to pick one or two fresh new artists and take them all the way, marketing them across africa.”

To access Veesion TV’s online content, one can visit their website at veesiontv.com. For those who wish to contact Veesion TV, they are welcome to visit their Facebook page and drop them a message.

New Special Needs School Opens – JJS Care Centre

Tanya Calitz

Due to the passion of Kim Flanagan as well as the quick response from the community Good Samaritans, the JJS Care Centre is up and running. This comes less than two months after the idea to open such a school was first featured in the Namib Independent.

The article spoke about Flanagan’s dream of opening a special needs school in Walvis, inspired by her own son, Justin, who was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy a few years back. due to his condition, Justin struggled in a regular school setup. Thus his mother, kim, established The Justin selby Care Centre in south africa to help parents in similar situations.

recently though, the family moved to Walvis where the need for such a facility was apparent. Mere five and a half weeks later, the school is up and running. as of Monday, 1 September the school officially opened its doors with 12 registered children.

“The response from the community has been great,” says kim, showing the paper their new edu-therapy day-care facility. The school is set up in a church building, granted to them by Pastor bennie and his wife karen at the ‘lewende Water kerk’ in Hermes.

One party that came to the table to support the cause was the Jonathan Jacob Project, who donated much needed kitchen equipment. There were further a cash donation from the Philadelphia Church in Narraville and a cash donation from community member Jo-anne downey. The round Table donated bedding and a wheelchair, Printline sponsored the wall signature, and Cindy and Cherelee raw as well as Mike Chart all donated clothes, groceries, stationery and toys.

The school has an accredited programme

specially designed for special needs children, and offers each child the right amount of stimulation needed to develop at their expected pace. a dietician planned a well-balanced menu for the children at the school, and liezel schaefer Physiotherapy offered to work with the children weekly, free of charge. Currently JJs Care Centre has three teachers, namely leonie solomons, lorenzia Joubert and kim herself, who is well trained and equipped to work with special needs children.

although the school is up and running and well supported by the community, JJs will need the continued support from the community to keep its doors open. school hourse are: Monday to Friday from 7h15 to 17h15, and saturday from 8h00 to 13h00.

This Montessori chart of “Age-Appropriate Chores for Children” is making the Facebook rounds. (The shares on my page came from the Facebook page of “Maria Montessori.”) With it, the commentary.

apparently, a lot of “other parents” have complained about this list. Those “other parents” say things like “children aren’t slaves” and “carrying firewood is dangerous!” Scroll down, and you do find those parents, noting

that the label on the cleaning supplies says to “keep away from children,” and so they do, and what 10-year-old can mow the lawn? Who would trust a 12-year-old with hedge clippers?

but we, the parents in the know who share this chart and comment with the greatest enthusiasm — our children are doing these things. Of course they are. “My barely 2-y-o is doing the 6-7 things lol!” one proud writer declares. We’re not raising any entitled brats. Nope, our children contribute to the

family, learn responsibility and take pride in their work. Well, maybe yours do. Me, i hovered over that share button — and paused. My own kids have done most of those things (i’m afraid dusting baseboards and disinfecting doorknobs haven’t been on our list). They can do the big ones for their ages (they’re 7, 8, 9 and 12): weed garden, fold clothes, make a meal, do simple home repairs. and sometimes they do. and sometimes they don’t. Why not? because too often, i don’t make them

Age Appropriate Chores for Children— and sometimes, i don’t even ask.

before we get off on what a terrible parent i am (often true), i will say that there are certain chores that don’t get shirked. every one of them mucks stalls in all weather; every one of them does farm and horse jobs at moments when we would all vastly prefer to be inside. (We own a horse barn that houses four of our horses, and six others.) That’s the stuff that has to be done and that i can’t do without help. but for so many indoor chores, i’m far too prone not to push. Once i’ve nagged them into clearing their plates and nagged them into feeding the dogs and cats and nagged them into picking up their socks off the floor, I tend to open the full dishwasher, shrug and realise that i would far, far rather spend the seven minutes it will take to empty it than nag anyone yet again.

The result is a scattershot approach that has not, as yet, resulted in children who do much of anything unless you ask, ask again, ask a third time, and then holler. We have a chore wheel, perused with dedication to determine who feeds

which animals at which part of the day, but several of the chores on it (“clean kitchen” and “empty dishwasher” spring to mind) go undone. even our older children feel lame about this. “You should make us do our chores,” my 9-year-old told me recently. “Or you shouldn’t give us, like, half of our allowance.” (allowance isn’t tied to chores at our house, although we’ve gone through haphazard efforts at taking it away if things aren’t done.)

and we vowed to change, but that was two weeks ago, and to be honest, we haven’t. Of all the things i thought might be difficult about having children, i never realised it would be so much work to get them to do any work. and so, although i might get partial credit for my good intentions (i certainly believe children of these ages ought to be capable of all of these things), i don’t give myself a very good grade for effort, let alone results.

By Maria Marcello

Former judge Mary Jane Mowat’s recent comments about rape convictions are outrageous. “Rape conviction statistics will not improve until women stop getting so drunk,” she said this week. To me however, they are also personal.

In my first term of my second year at Oxford University, i was raped while passed out in my bed. Yes, my

unconsciousness was due to alcohol. desperate to learn how to play poker, i had invited some friends over to teach me, one of whom brought two companions. Poker rapidly descended into a drinking game. being both bad at poker and intolerant of alcohol, i ended up passing out. i have since learnt that i was put to bed, but i don’t remember anything. Then a guy i didn’t know had sex with me in my sleep. i have one very clear

memory, which still haunts me two years later. i remember waking up during the night and seeing him on top of me, my trousers around my ankles and my shirt still on. i pulled away and heard him mutter “Oh no, it fell out” to himself, at which point i blacked out again. i assume he continued to rape me.

i told very few people at the time, but a friend came with me to the police station. The receptionist, on

Raped at University Pressured by Police to Drop Charges

learning i was reporting a sex offence, insisted on me giving details in front of everybody in the waiting room before taking me somewhere private. Two officers then came to my house, where I was questioned further. One described rape as “just something that happens”, especially at university. The only advice i received was to drink less in future. Once i explained what had happened and provided forensics, the policemen contacted a woman i was told dealt with rape allegations. she came into the kitchen, where i had been with the two policemen and my friend, and sent him from the room insisting the conversation be private — even as i maintained i needed him for moral support and didn’t mind him being there. she proceeded to question me rather forcefully, in a very short and matter-of-fact tone, and concluded that because i was drunk i couldn’t prove anything, informing me my evidence would not stand up in court.

The woman asked me to decide in that moment whether or not to press charges. i was not allowed to leave the kitchen until I had made my decision. She didn't fail to emphasise how traumatic i would find the process or her certainty my case would not stand up in court: i would be unable to prove i was unconscious at the time or that I didn't drunkenly consent. in fact, the Crown Prosecution service states “capacity to consent may evaporate well before a complainant becomes unconscious”. Photos and videos my friends shot of me passed out both on the floor and on my bed proved I was incapable of consenting: unable to talk or stand up, i cannot have been capable of agreeing to sex. The entire experience was perhaps as disorientating as it could possibly have been. i was given no opportunity to seek advice or regain composure; no chance to sleep on the matter.

The woman insisted on me deciding whether or not to press charges immediately. still shaken and vulnerable, i was in no position to make such a decision on the spot, and her description of the court process scared me. it was little wonder, then, that i dropped it. The woman who came to my kitchen told me my situation was exactly what former judge Mowat calls “one person’s word against another’s”. Her implication is that a woman who was drunk can’t prove anything — that the whole case is a matter of he-said-she-said. For me, it wasn’t. as

it happened, i did have evidence. Had the police cared enough they could have acquired dNa, but the woman told them to return the clothes, bed sheets and used condoms i had given them. These all provided incontrovertible evidence that the guy had had sex with me. in fact, given his bragging at dinner the following day, this was never really in question. “i lost the poker,” he said, “but i did pretty well if you know what i mean.” Just typing that today sickens me.

My Oxford College, when i spoke to its professional welfare staff, largely ignored me; the man who raped me received a minor reprimand and no further repercussions. and despite several friends explaining on multiple occasions that his mere presence unnerved me, he seemed to devote his life to making me feel uncomfortable. He has turned up the college bar where i work and just sat there, and one time he followed me as i left a party. i now rarely attend college events. and despite the number of times i have contacted the welfare officers about his behaviour, they have largely ignored me, except to say that if he’s around i should just leave. i have a year left at Oxford, as does he. i still don’t understand why i should be the one leaving.

“I'm not saying it is right to rape a drunken woman,” Mary Jane Mowat told the Oxford Mail. “But [when] they've got a woman who says ‘i was absolutely off my head, i can’t really remember what i was doing’ . . . how are they supposed to react?” Juries should react, in those circumstances, with the understanding that a state of extreme inebriation is not one where a person can give valid consent for sex and that this in itself is evidence of rape.

The CPs explicitly states as much, encouraging investigators to “consider whether supporting evidence is available to demonstrate that the complainant was so intoxicated that he/she had lost their capacity to consent”. There would be more convictions if the police process didn’t pressure women with viable evidence to drop their reports. In 2012–13, official treatment of victims like me meant only 15 per cent of rapes recorded by the police even went to court.

Mowat is right in that rape conviction statistics are lower than they should be. However, the criminal justice system is to blame, not drunk women.

A Mexican woman has become the world’s oldest person as she is celebrating her 127th birthday this week, her friends and relatives say. She attributes her long life to eating chocolate, sleeping for days on end and never getting married, her family have said.

The woman, named leandra becerra lumbreras, was reportedly born on 31 august 1887 – the same year as Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. Her relatives told Mexico’s el Horizonte newspaper that she has sadly already seen five of her children and some of her 20 grandchildren die. Her granddaughter, Miriam alvear, 43 said in el Horizonte: “she is entirely lucid; she blows your mind with stories from the revolution.” lumbreras has however lost her birth certificate and so is not officially recognised as the world’s oldest person, who is Misao Okawa, aged 116 from Japan.

NASA’s Space Launch System, the USA’s first exploration-class spacecraft since the Space Shuttle, has officially passed the whiteboard formulation stage and moved into full-scale development.

The sls, which will be the most powerful rocket ever built, will allow Nasa to land astronauts on Mars and captured asteroids, and perhaps other planets and moons throughout the Solar System as well. The first SLS mission should lift off no later than 2018, sending the Orion capsule around the Moon. asteroid- and Mars-bound missions should follow a few years after that. The question is, will NASA be the first to send humans to Mars (probably no sooner than 2032) — or will a commercial company such as spaceX get there much earlier? Nasa began the sls’s design process way back in 2011. Now that the formulation stage has been completed, and focus has shifted to actually developing and fabricating the launch system’s millions of constituent components, we have a very firm idea of what the SLS will be capable of, and thus what kind of missions Nasa will task the sls with.

The space launch system is broken up into blocks. Block I, the first and most simple design, consists of a core stage that’s lifted almost straight from the space shuttle: it has two space shuttle solid rocket boosters (SSRBs), and a first stage that’s fashioned out of a converted space shuttle external Tank (that

A woman came on a TV show to prove her ex-boyfriend was the father of her twins - only to find that he was the father of just one of them. Speaking about the revelation, which was aired live on his show, admitted he did not even think this was possible.

He said: "The show has very dramatic and very edgy themes, which i think are played out in american society. The most unusual dramatic dNa theme was when the woman came on the show and had different fathers to her twins."regina contacted the Maury show to try to prove that her ex-boyfriend eric was responsible for her twins. When Povich read out the dNa results and announced that eric was the father of just one of her twins, he had to explain to a visibly shocked audience that this was not beyond the realms of possibility.

When it happened a second time on the show in 2008, to 19-year-old alejandrina and her ex-boyfriend Jose, he was armed with the facts. He said: "i want to explain about this situation. it happened before on this show with fraternal twins. less than one per cent of fraternal twins are from different fathers, to be accurate 0.001 per cent of the time and this is one of those less than one per cent."

This occurrence is so uncommon that only a few cases have been documented in medical records. in rare instances when twins are conceived by different fathers, it's called heteropaternal superfecundation, which occurs when two or more of a woman's eggs are fertilised by different men within the same ovulation period.

before the results were read out, alejandrina promised that she had not slept

big red cylinder thing — but on the sls it’ll be painted white). Together with a modified Delta Cryogenic Second Stage (modified from the delta iV), block i will be able to lift around 70 metric tons (154,000 lbs) into low-earth orbit. There is only expected to be one launch of the block i variant.

if all goes to plan, it will launch sometime in 2017 or 2018 and send an un-crewed Orion capsule on a circumlunar orbit around the dark side of the Moon. The next variant of the sls, block ib, will use the same core stage as block i — but instead of the modified Delta IV second stage, it’ll have the brand-new exploration Upper stage. The eUs has a lot of fuel and four rl10 rocket engines, boosting the total payload capacity to around 110 metric tons to leO. Finally, at some point in the 2030s, block ii will arrive, which replaces the two ssrbs with new, “advanced boosters.” block ii will be capable of lifting around 155 metric tons to leO. The Orion capsule is what Nasa will use to land astronauts on the Moon, captured asteroids, Mars, and any other interesting lumps of rock throughout the Solar System. The first manned Orion launch, to a captured asteroid in lunar orbit, is scheduled to occur in 2021. Combined with spaceX’s crewed dragon spacecraft and boeing’s CsT-100, things are looking up for human space exploration!

with anyone else while she was with Jose and broke down in tears when the truth came out.

Jose said his ex was a 'party girl' and said the test results proved she was a 'whore'.

Jose said he would take responsibility for the one child while Povich told alejandrina that they would do another paternity test if she was able to find the father of her second child.

in May 2009, Mia Washington from Texas also gave birth to twins with different fathers.

She and her fiancé ordered a paternity test when they noticed the twins had very different features. she then admitted to having an affair. Heteropaternal sperm are capable of waiting in the fallopian tubes for between three and five days, while the ovum may only survive a matter of hours if fertilisation does not occur. The fertilisation time window is relatively narrow, particularly if sperm from two different males must arrive. Given the single-pair reproduction strategy employed by most people, these criteria are very rarely met.

There are between seven and ten documented cases in medical literature about twins with different fathers.

As a midsize or compact SUV, the Discovery Sport still manages to pack in seven seats with the third row featuring a foldable pair of seats. The middle row of seats can be reclined as well as fitted to rails in order to slide back and forth, this makes the seating arrangements particularly adaptable.

land rover also claim that the Discovery Sport can be fitted with up to five 12V sockets

and three Usb charging ports servicing all three rows of seats. an entirely new infotainment system has been built in and is powered by an eight-inch touch screen in the centre of the dash. Off road credentials remain firmly cemented as the Discovery sport is equipped with Terrrain response allowing it to adjust and cope with differing terrains at the push of a button. it also has a multi-link rear suspension setup, which land rover says improves

Fernando Alonso has responded to speculation that he could be about to turn his back on Ferrari. Alonso’s title-less tenure in red has culminated in the 2014 V6 season through which so far the Maranello team has notably struggled.

it has triggered speculation that alonso, the highest-paid and arguably most highly rated driver in the pits lane, could use a performance clause in his contract and return to Mclaren. reports in recent days have suggested Mclaren, desperate for a truly top driver to spearhead the looming Honda era, is offering alonso an outrageous N$343 million a year.

sky TV on Tuesday (2 september) quoted Alonso as saying: "It's not my intention at the moment to move, I want to win here and finish the job that we started some years ago." He acknowledged the rumours but insisted nothing that came "from my mouth" triggered them. alonso said: "There was a lot of speculation, which is not disturbing but created tension and stress. Yet you also feel happy and proud that the best teams have an interest in you and say so in public."

also on Tuesday (september 2) ousted team boss stefano domenicali commented on alonso and rumours about the spaniard having been unhappy at Ferrari for some time.

domenicali was quoted as saying by Ferrari insider Leo Turrini's blog: "It is not true that Alonso had a difficult situation with me or with the team. Fernando is a nice person and i say this honestly. Compared to schumi, he certainly has a more open attitude towards communication and maybe sometimes a word is mistranslated but he has never been negative towards the team. He has been unlucky, we have been unlucky, but if we had won a couple of titles, nobody would criticise."

Land Rover Discovery Sport Launched

Alonso Offered N$343 Million to Switch Teams?rear occupant comfort levels,

even in the back row where it can be notoriously bouncy.

The headline grabber, as far as safety systems are concerned, is the introduction of a pedestrian airbag, which we first saw being introduced on the current Volvo V40. The discovery sport is also equipped with autonomous emergency braking, where if the system detects an imminent accident it will apply the brakes. at launch the disco sport will be powered by the 2.2-litre sd4 turbo-diesel, which we recently drove in the range rover evoque. in the disco sport it will produce 140kW and will be connected to either the nine-speed automatic or a six speed manual. There is also talk of a two wheel drive ed4 turbo-diesel engine that will join the range later in 2015 with CO2 emissions from just 119g/km. The discovery sport will go on sale in europe in January 2015.
