I hope you will enjoy fellowship even today. Titus did a good job last weekend when he ably represented the club at the Sam Owori polio cycling event together with our two teams; Rotaract club of Makerere University and Rotaract club of Mulago. MUK came second place winning a bronze. We thank Titus and we thank our rotaractors as well. That then, should ring a loud bell in our ears to remind us that Titus and Irene say, ‘’I Do’’ Come 4 th November, 2017. I thank those of us who have already given them support. If you have not yet, please do so this week, for time has run out. Once again our congratulatory message goes to Agnes, “Maama Rice,’’ as she is referred to in some quarters. Winning that recognition for the BBC Top 100 women in the world is quite an accomplishment. Thank you for supporting the women in the Lango Sub region with economic empowerment. That is one of the areas of focus of rotary. When you help grow women, you help grow the nation. Today, we are privileged to host The Managing Director Uganda Breweries Limited, Mr. Mark Ocitti Ongom. He will be talking to us about, ‘‘The work culture in Uganda compared to Sub Saharan Africa.’’ Let us lend him our ears, and get prepared to listen and learn. “The Rotary Wheel”Rotary Club of Kampala Vol. 6 Issue 43 Thursday 01st June, 2017

Dear members;

The New Rotary year is here. How fast it comes! But it comes with hope. It comes with promises. By the look of things, it’s going to be a good year.

I therefore take this opportunity to thank immediate past President Stephen for leading us well in the past Rotary year 2016/17, and to warmly welcome each one of you into this new Rotary year 2017/18. It’s going to be a year of greater friendships and love, greater activity, together, and therefore greater bonding and strength. It’s going to be a year of greater involvement from each of us, so we can be able to ‘’feel at rotary.’’ It’s going to be a year of growth in terms of numbers, but also growth as individuals across all spheres of learning from both within rotary and from without .

The theme of the year is; Rotary: making a difference.

How are we going to make a difference if we do not participate actively in club activities, if we do not attend fellowship regularly, if we do not give to TRF, if we do not invite our friends and colleagues to come and join rotary so we can have more hands in this noble work? District Governor Ken Mugisha and RI President Ian Riseley expect us to be the best Rotarians we can ever be this year. Let us, therefore get ready to roll up our sleeves and serve. I will give you a promise that the more you will serve with a willing heart, the happier you will get the better you will become as an individual.

We are going to continue using the Namuziga as our tool of sharing information both in the club and beyond. We appeal to you members to use this opportunity to write articles or share any such information that will uplift us as members of the club and Rotarians altogether.

May we always be willing to do that which we are asked to do. May we leave an indelible mark wherever we put our foot step for the betterment of human kind, may we serve well, so we can make a difference.

God Bless you all.

President Fred’s Vision for 2017-2018the Rotary Club of Kampala for the year ahead. They are:

1. Membership growth and member participation,

2. Service delivery in health & education, working to improve the hospital in Mukono, and

3. Improving member relations.

Fred’s aim: minimum of 2 hours each month per member, meet our goals and brand ourselves positively. This aligns with our service focus on the Hospital, by delivering education activities and service projects.

The third component of this year’s strategy is to allow for members to better know each other and build stronger ties with each other, personally and professionally. To get there, Fred will be introducing paid for adverts for member businesses in our newsletter, a forum

5 minutes during each fellowship, and other networking opportunities within delivering service to help encourage members to be a part of the projects we subscribe to.

The second, which takes up the bulk of the book, is a rich description of different varieties of political leadership in diverse cultures. It is hard to imagine a better guide than Brown, who has lived and worked in the UK, US and Russia, and is both an outstanding political scholar and an elegant, witty writer.

Dear members;

Path: New Tools for the Polio Endgame

Novel vaccines for the post-eradication eraPATH and partners are in the early stages of testing two novel oral polio vaccine candidates against type 2 polio (nOPV2). You may wonder: If we have effective vaccines that have brought us this far toward ending polio, why are new vaccines part of our long-game strategy?

An Achilles’ heel in currently available oral polio vaccines (OPVs) is one of our challenges before the finish line. OPVs have had an invaluable impact in driving down polio cases, and they remain the best tool for outbreaks because they prevent person-to-person disease transmission. But the current OPV can, in rare cases, revert to its virulent form, shed from a person, and circulate in the community. In the post-eradication era, we can’t risk seeding future outbreaks. If successful, nOPV2 could be deployed during an outbreak—with less likelihood of introducing any lurking strains that could compromise the elimination of polio.

Inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) is the vaccine that will continue to be used as a safeguard in the years after polio eradication. It is highly effective in protecting an individual who receives the vaccine, but IPV’s Achilles’ heel is that… READ MORE

Preserving Our History

This is a chronicle of IPP Stephen Lwanga’s perception of the Rotary Club of Kampala during his year’s presidency. It is also an attempt to leave a written statement of what happened during the Rotary Year 2016-2017 at the Rotary Club of Kampala. Since the period of leadership is so short, it is easy not to be able to relate how the Club has progressed over time under different leaders when leaders do not leave records of the happenings in the Club during their leadership. Institutional memory should be preserved through documentation.

The record can be found at www.rotarykampala.com

What’s Happening in Rotary

The prestigious awards are given annually to the finest film and video productions. Rotary’s documentary, “Rotary Family Health Days” received a Silver Telly, the highest honor, in the online video-documentary category, and a Bronze Telly in the online video-branded content and entertainment category. The documentary was shown by the South African Broadcasting Corporation and throughout Africa.

The film documents the tremendous burden HIV/AIDS places on African families and communities.

The Rotary Health Days project, now in its fifth year and supported by Rotary clubs in Africa, has grown to deliver free basic health care, including HIV/AIDS screening and other preventive services, to underserved communities in

Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and Uganda. It began in 2010, when Ugandan Stephen Mwanje, then governor of District 9211, asked Bunch if the Rotarian group would organize a multisite, comprehensive health event.

The award-winning documentary was a joint project of the public relations and broadcast media staff at Rotary’s world headquarters in Evanston, Illinois. In addition to Chudzinski, producer Vivian Fiore, video editor Todd Murphy, and executive producer Stephen Guenther worked on the film.
