TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

1. Terms and Conditions of Service

The terms and conditions applicable to this post are those of all NHS Employees.

2. Superannuation

You have the option to join the NHS Superannuation Scheme, to participate in the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme or to take out a Personal Pension.

Employee’s contributions to the NHS Scheme amount to 5% to 10.9% of salary (depending on rate of Pensionable Pay) and the employers’ contribution equates to 14% of salary. Employees in the NHS Scheme are “Contracted-out” of the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme and pay a lower rate of National Insurance contributions. Employees who choose to participate in the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme pay the higher rate of National Insurance contribution. A Stakeholder Pension is also available.

2. JOB PURPOSE

They will participate/assist in leading and managing a team of staff for a defined speciality as delegated by the Line Manager. The post holder will be expected to function as an independent practitioner/clinical expert by virtue of their in-depth knowledge and experience. They will assist in leading and managing a team of staff as delegated by the Line Manager. Is accountable for practice within clinical area of specialism and is able to provide expert advice as required both during normal working hours and out of hours as part of the on-call team. The post holder will initiate and lead /manage projects, which will deliver enhanced patient care and inform best practice statements.

4. SCOPE AND RANGE

The post holder has no direct budgetary responsibility although they will have a responsibility for the delivery of cost effective care.

Has a responsibility for ensuring cost effective staff utilisation in line with workload requirements.

Assists Department Manager with Capital Budget planning in the absence of Clinical leader Will be required to supervise qualified and unqualified staff on a day-to-day basis as delegated

by Line Manager.

Direct Reports – Theatre Assistants, Health Care Assistants, Porters, Preceptees, Students and RN’s /ODP staff.

5. MAIN DUTIES

NURSING PROCESS

Ability to organise own workload with regards to assessing patient needs, planning, implementation and evaluation of a programme of care which is evidence based utilising all available resources taking into consideration the lifestyle, gender and cultural background and ensure involvement with the patient, family, carers and significant others.

Identification and sourcing of necessary resources to ensure patient receives the planned perioperative care, liasing with Inventory Co-ordinator.

Plans special requirements for non routine procedures advises Manager/Clinical Leader of equipment loans and special supplies required highlighting budget implications.

LEGAL & ETHICAL

Practice within the legal and ethical framework as established by the nursing Midwifery Council and national legislation to ensure the patients interests and well-being are met.

Work within the NHS special health board and H&S Executive legislation guidelines and procedures.

Empowering patients to take responsibility for their health, well being and future lifestyle by practising in an open and transparent manner thereby ensuring patients have the relevant information to participate in decisions about their care.

Involvement in reviewing and developing new policies and procedures.

Responsible for ensuring that their subordinates adhere to the mentioned policies.

Implement and evaluate preceptorship programme for all newly qualified nursing staff within the clinical area.

Prepare and deliver formal and informal teaching sessions and support others in providing education for patients, relatives and colleagues.

Manage complaints and ensure subsequent solutions are achieved within the clinical area.

Telephone system.

The post holder is responsible for inputting information into the clinical information system and also into patient’s written medical records. They will comply with the Data Protection Act, Caldicott Guidelines and local policies regarding confidentiality and access to medical records.

They also have a responsibility to ensure that their subordinates are adhering to the aforementioned policies.

Ability to access e-mail using outlook express.

Ability to access intranet for organisational policies and procedures.

Effective verbal, non-verbal and written communication with all members of the multidisciplinary team within own department and relevant departments, which service the clinical areas.

9. PHYSICAL, MENTAL, EMOTIONAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB

Physical Skills

Administration and management of intravenous therapies. Insertion of urinary catheters. Removal of Sutures. Speed and accuracy is exercised when manipulating fine instruments and when altering

parameters on specialist equipment i.e. Phaco Device /Defib. Paddles. Handling and passing of surgical instruments.

Physical Demands

Standing in fixed position for long periods during procedure. Standing in awkward positions for long periods. Working with patients within confined areas. Frequent re positioning of patients both, conscious or unconscious. Handling confused and

agitated patients. Participating in resuscitation attempts. Moving and Handling of heavy patients and/or objects in line with Manual Handling Regulations. Standing/walking for the majority of the shift.

Mental Demands

Concentration required when checking instrumentation, documents/case-notes and calculating drug dosages while subject to frequent interruptions from patient/relatives/team members.

Concentration required when observing patient conditions/behaviours, which may be unpredictable.

Ability to rapidly response to critical changes in patients condition. Concentration for long periods during complex cases. Concentration required in maintaining an overview of clinical activity within area of work.

Emotional Demands

Awareness of multiple needs within area. Communicating with distressed, anxious, worried patients/relatives. Caring for patients during and immediately after receipt of bad news (occasionally). Communicating with difficult personalities within the multidisciplinary team in order to enable

effective patient management. Occasional exposure to verbal aggression. Dealing with sudden death.

Working Conditions

Constant exposure to body fluids, blood, faeces, handling dirty instruments, emptying bedpans/urinals, changing catheter bags several times throughout each shift.

Constant exposure to working in an artificial light environment.
