INDUSTRIAL VISIT 1 “SATHIYAMOORTHI SAGAR RESERVOIR”

Name of the faculty incharge : Dr. DeepthaThattai and Mr. D. Justus Reymond, SRMIST Date : 04.9.2019

Venue : SATHIYAMOORTHI SAGAR RESERVOIR at Poondi

A One day industrial visit was planned for 1st year and 2nd year students of M. Tech in

Environmental Engineering on 4th September 2019. We got a chance to visit

SATHIYAMOORTHI SAGAR RESERVOIR or POONDI RESERVOIR at Poondi,

Thiruvalluvar District, TamilNadu, India. It acts as the important water source for Chennai city

which is 60 km away. Poondi Reservoir (later named as Sathyamoorthy Sagar) was constructed in

1944 across the Kosathalaiyar River or Kotralai River in Thiruvallur district with a capacity of

2573 Mcft and placed in service for intercepting and storing Kosathalaiyar River water. Surplus

water flows down the river which is again intercepted by Tamaraipakkam Anicut and diverted

to Sholavaram Lake and Puzhal lake. (A lined canal known as Poondi Canal was later constructed

in 1972 to convey water from Poondi Reservoir to Sholavaram Lake). This reservoir was

constructed at the cost of Rupees 65 lakhs. The original complex of Oondreswarar Temple is

believed to have been built by Cholas, while the present masonry structure was built during the

16th century. The temple was moved to the current location in 1942 to ease the construction of the

reservoir. The reservoir has a garden is a popular picnic spot in the region.

A total of 12 students accompanied by Dr. DeepthaThattai and Mr. D. Justus Reymond

visited the Poondi Reservoir. The trip started around 8:00 AM from campus. In the Poondi

Reservoir, we visited the Poondi Dam, where we got to learn about the water distribution to the

various other lakes like Redhills and Chembarambakkam. The main source of the Poondi river is

the Krishna River originated from Andhra Pradesh. We students also visited the Institute of

Hydraulics and Hydrology in the Poondi dam. We also got chance to visit the model simulation

dam, where we learnt about how the water is distributed according to the flow conditions. At last,

we got a chance to visit KADALERU POONDI CANAL, where the water from Krishna River

flows through this canal and reaches the Poondi Reservoir. We gained more information from our

first Industrial Visit. We reached campus around 4:00 PM.

c Name of the Guest : Hon’ble Minister of Human Resource Development Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal Date : 25.02.2020 Venue : Delhi

The students of SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur have made their Institute proud once again. This time, Team SRM Green Stabilizers from the Department of Civil Engineering ranked first in the national AICTE - Chhatra Vishwakarma Award – 2019.

The team collected the award from the Hon’ble Minister of Human Resource Development Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal and Chairman of All India Council for Technical Education, Prof. Anil D Sahasrabudhe.

The award ceremony was held in New Delhi on 24 February 2020. The team received a certificate and a cash prize of Rs.51,000. The team was ranked first in the Land category by presenting an innovative solution/prototype under the theme ‘How to enhance the income of village’. The student team consists of M. Aravind, Shankar Kandasamy, Dhivya S and Kavya M. They were mentored by Chezhiyan S, Assistant Professor/Civil.

The event was organized by All India Council for Technical Education. SRMIST was one of the 6,676 applicants received throughout the country. The team also ranked first in the ‘Land category’ and received a special mention on how their project was a perfect solution for the problem.

The project submitted for the award is "Adopting Bio Reinforcement Techniques to Control Soil Erosion on Bench Terraces and Irrigation Channels".

Their project adopted bio-reinforcement techniques to control soil erosion on bench terraces and irrigation channels. The shoulder bunds and risers of the bench terraces are severely endangered by soil erosion, so the bench terraces and bunds of the irrigation channels were bio-stabilized by planting Vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides) densely. To ensure the results scientifically, the specialized In-situ jet erosion test apparatus has been designed and fabricated for conducting erodability test in the field itself. By conducting In-situ jet erosion test periodically at several bio-reinforced sites, it was found that the control of soil erosion by Vetiver bio-reinforcement is increased by 56% in six months and the strength increase was found to be 62% comparatively with the unreinforced soil. This technique will facilitate the farmers in maintaining bench terraces without any financial hurdles.

Webinar 1 " DEFECTS IN RCC BUILDINGS – CAUSES AND REMEDIES " Name of the Guest : CEA FEST 2020 Date : 08.03.2020 Venue : IITM

SRMIST is the Champion of GEO GENIUS for the 2nd consecutive year, a national level technical event organised by IIT Madras and L&T Construction during 06/03/2020 to 08/03/2020 at IITM campus as a part of CEA FEST 2020. Teams were shortlisted based on their Team Description Paper (TDP) previously submitted. The TDP includes the proposal for the composition of materials and reinforcement details. The selected teams were assigned the task of build-up of the mechanized earth wall with inclined backfill using granular by-products and domestic solid waste materials.

More than 20 teams from all over India competed, among the contestants, the team SRM GREEN STABILIZERS bagged the first place for their innovative approach towards the problem statement. The winning team constructed the mechanized earth wall using an optimum composition of recycled materials such as GGBS, Fly Ash and M-Sand based on the literature review and pilot experimental studies carried out in Soil Mechanics Laboratory. The inclined surface of the earth wall was stabilized by wrapping the batter face with newspaper reinforcement and achieved a 49 Degree stable slope, which was found to be the steepest among all other competing models. This approach facilitated the team to reduce the ‘right of way’ effectively and

minimize the fill requirements. This also enabled the model to perform well in stability check by Rebound Hammer test. Further, the model was also stable in erosion test.

Juries of the event, Professors Dr. Ramesh Kannan and Dr. Tarun Naskar, IIT Madras, had appreciated the team regarding our solution for the problem given. The cash award and certificates for the winners were presented by Dr. Manu Santhanam, Professor and Head, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Madras along with other delegates of IIT.

Further, Dr.C.Muthamizhchelvan, Director (Engg. & Tech.), SRMIST, have congratulated the winning team. Head of Civil Engineering Department, Dr.K.S.Satyanarayanan, and other faculty members have also appreciated the winners for their efforts made to bring laurels to the Department and University.

Webinar3" Structural Failure Causes and Research Thought".

" Name of the Guest : Prof. Md. Abdul Mannan, from UNIMAS, Malaysia Date : 11.05.2020 Venue : Zoom (online )

Prof. Md. Abdul Mannan, from UNIMAS, Malaysia explained on the topic "Structural

Failure Causes and Research Thought". The structural failure is defined as loss of structural

integrity, which is the loss of load- carrying capacity of a member within a structure, or of the

structure itself. The structural failure is initiated when the material is stressed beyond its strength

limit, thus causing crack or excessive deformation. Materials follow laws of nature and physics

perfectly. The engineering profession should study the structural failure cases. An engineer will

gain knowledge from the past failure. understands what caused the failure and how it occurred.find

out the way to avoid such failure in future. Thus, the study of structural failure causes should be

part of undergraduate curriculum in relevant courses of Civil Engineering. Formwork design

course also should be included in course curriculum
