From the Principal’s Desk Congratulations to the students selected in the team to compete in the next level of athletics at Kingaroy this week. I was proud of how many students qualified and am very pleased with the feedback I have received regarding positive attitudes towards competing. There are many events coming up over the next few weeks. Information and permission slip regarding the Technology Challenge and Readers Cup have been given to the senior students. These events involve students from years 5 and 6 only. The other key events before the end of term include, the Harlin-Linville sports carnival, Linville-Benarkin Bike ride and the Somerset Cup. I will be taking long service leave in the last two weeks of term. Karen Hussey will be the acting Principal for this period and Ms Fisher will cover the year 5/6 class. The Premier’s Reading Challenge is on again, please see the letter attached to the newsletter today. If you have any questions, please see your child’s teacher or Mrs Enks. The final P&C meeting of the term is on the 12
th June here at the school. I look
forward to seeing you there.
Can I please ask parents to check that jumpers are clearly labelled with
names. This will assist in the re-homing of lost property. Thanks in advance.
Have a great Week!

From the Prep/Year 1 Classroom It’s been a fun fortnight in Prep/1! The students had a wonderful time participating in Under 8s Day at
Toogoolawah State School. I was very proud of the way all our students behaved at Toogoolawah State School. See
the photos below for some of the fun activities that the students participated in.
Last Wednesday, the students participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime and received a participation
certificate. The book for this year, Alpacas with Maracas, was a hit with the students! Since the book contained
lots of rhyming words, we used it as a stimulus to write our own four-line poem. Mrs Enks surprised the students
with their own small bag of alpaca fleece which they used to decorate their funky alpaca. Thank you Mrs Enks!

From the Year 2/3/4 Classroom
Thank you to those parents who attended parent teacher interviews last week. It is always a pleasure to discuss
the progress and achievements that students are making in class. Please note I am happy to organise a mutually
convenient time to meet with parents and/or caregivers at any time throughout the year.
Our reading focus has been on non-fiction texts and the students have busy fact finding in reading groups and in
science with Mrs Hope.
All year levels have now completed their HASS (Humanities and Social Science) units of work. Year 2 have
identified, described, interpreted and represented geographical information about places at personal, local and
national scales. Year 3 and year 4 have located, collated and sequenced information, expressed points of view and
written a narrative about Anzac Day.
Anzac Day On 25 of April 1915 Australian and New Zealand soldiers landed at a place now called Anzac Cove on the shores of the Gallipoli Peninsula to fight the Turkish army. They were faced with a horrible situation. The beach where they landed was very narrow. Before they landed the Turks gunfire killed many of them. Anzac Day is important to the town of Villers-Bretonneux because the people were saved by the Australian soldiers in World War one. People pay their respect to the Turkish and the Australian soldiers by going to a dawn service at 4:00 am and sing the ode to the sound of the bugle. 44,000 people (Anzacs) died at Anzac Cove. Written by C.J. (Year 3) Anzac Day
On 25 April 1915 Australian and New Zealand soldiers landed at a place now called Anzac Cove. The Turks were on the mountains. When the Anzacs got there the Turks were already shooting at them. The Anzacs were pushing and the Turks were pushing back. The soldiers were struggling because the Turks had the high ground. They were courageous and strong. The Anzacs commemorate Anzac Day, they remember friends who didn’t come back. They feel sad and angry that the war ever existed but at the same time proud. They go to dawn services and the bugle is played. They march. Written by Harry (Year 4)

From the Year 5-6 Classroom.
In Maths, we will be completing assessment over the next couple of weeks – with a focus on measurement of and
problem-solving with angles. In our number work we have had a focus on identifying factors of numbers using
divisibility rules eg. Numbers are divisible by two if the number is even, numbers are divisible by three if the
sum of the digits is a multiple of three. Try asking your son or daughter if they know how to tell if a number is
divisible by four …
The Year 5/6 class is electric! Last week we role played the flow of electrons around a circuit. The annotated
diagrams that students produced after we discussed the role play were FABULOUS! It was fantastic to see not
only the detail of the drawings, but also the notes that supported the diagrams – they really showed their
understanding of circuits. This week students created an electrical circuit that included a switch. Great work
Izzy and Charles on problem-solving when your switch didn’t do what you expected! Again, the diagrams were im-
pressive – I can see real growth in how students are explaining their understanding.
Literacy – I have challenged students to write a narrative in five sentences. It might not sound like much, but
the idea is to focus on quality rather than quantity. Over the next few weeks I will be working with students on
ways to improve their sentences so that their stories really “pop”. Last week we looked at combining sentences,
or inserting more information into sentences. We also focused on how we start out sentences, putting the most
interesting information in theme position. Miss Fisher
From the Library On Wednesday we participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime which involves 9890 schools,
kindergartens and many other organisations across Australia reading the same story at the same time. This year
the book was called Alpacas with Maracas by Matt Cosgrove. The event, now in its 19th year, aims to promote the
value of reading and literacy. A special thank you to Charlie Foster for reading the book and his trusty sidekick
Matt for turning the pages.
