(1) Record Keeping: Teachers have a professional responsibility to monitor, record and communicate student progress. Many schools and districts have adopted networked grading systems, and some publish grades on secure websites.

• Use your school's gradebook program to develop a report for a real or hypothetical class of ten or more students who are assessed on five or more assignments. Submit a printout of your gradebook and the detailed report card (progress report) for an individual student. If you do not have access to such a program, you may use Gradekeeper or download a sample shareware "gradebook" program.

Figure 2: Pierre Simon Laplace report card

Figure 1 demonstrates my grade book. I have 10 students in my class who are all geniuses. They will all receive an A. Figure 2 demonstrates the report of Pierre Simon Laplace. He has done well in my math class. He received an A- on his exams, A+ on his homework assignments, and A+ on the final exam. Thus, he will be receiving an A. (2) Assessment: Teachers must regularly assess student progress. Many textbook publishers make test construction easier by providing test generators, software which allows the teacher to quickly compose tests and keys from question databases. Test generators allow the teacher to input questions, and often provide databases of questions the teacher can select from. *TPE-tip A well-structured exam may be used as an artifact for TPE3, Interpretation and Use of Assessments.

• Use a test generator to construct an exam composed of questions you have

selected from existing question banks.

• Software such as Examview allows teachers to develop tests and post them on the Internet. Take this short physics quiz generated with the Examview, or this geology quiz made with Quizmaker. Include a screen capture of your score (actual score is inconsequential) and discuss the benefits and problems associated with online testing.

The test generator was not working since we needed a password to generate an exam. Thus, Dr. Herr asks us to omit this assignment.

Figure 3: Answers to the quiz on geology

Online exams will grade my exams without doing anything. Thus, I will not

spend time grading my math exams. Online exams will give my students their grade once they summit the exam. Thus, they will receive instant feedback and it is easy to use. Figure 3 demonstrates the quiz on geology that I took. Some of the problems that I encountered in the past were that my friends would pay someone to take their exams. My friends all received an A. However, this is cheating and this is the reason why I would not use online exams. Teachers cannot monitor their students when they are taking online

exams. Thus, it is necessary that we monitor our students when they are taking online exams. (3) Communication: Students benefit when teachers clearly state their expectations in written form. When these expectations are availalbe on the Internet, all students and parents can benefit, particularly students who have been absent. A variety of commercial resources exist with which teachers can post calendars, homework assignments, and other important documents.

• Put your class assignments on the web at Yourhomework , SchoolNotes or similar service. Include a screen capture of your published assignment schedule.

Figure 4: Demonstrates my class assignments

Figure 4 demonstrates a demo for one of my algebra one class. However, it will not be posted since I am current not teaching, but this is a demo of how my assignments would be posted on yourhomework.com. Yourhomework.com will allow my students to have easy access to their homework assignments. It will be a reminder that they must finish their assignments on time since a due date is posted. (4) Presentations: Presentation software provides teachers the opportunity to display text and graphics in a slide show fashion. PowerPoint and Keynote are two of the most popular presentation tools. Teachers and professors make extensive use of presentations, but many are concerned about the potentially negative effects such presentations can have on instruction. *TPE-tip A well developed educational presentation can serve as an artifact for TPE 4, Making Content Accessible, or TPE 10, Instructional Time, if used with presenter tools.

• After reading the articles on the educational use and abuse of presentation software, summarize how presentations should be constructed and delivered to maximize learning and minimize abuse.

• Locate and download one or more PowerPoint presentations relevant to your teaching needs. Include the URL of the location from which you obtained them and summarize the PowerPoint and where in your curriculum you will use it.

• Make a PowerPoint presentation to teach a lesson in your subject area, keeping in mind the principles you have outlined above and the guidelines provided (see tutorial). Your presentation should include numerous graphics and be at least 10 slides in length. (a) Provide an electronic copy of your presentation (ppt format) on your website. (b) Embed screen captures of your presentation in the template. Make sure the content is easy to read.

• Using iPhoto (Mac), Picasa (Windows), or similar slide viewer software, create a

photo library for your discipline. You should include photos you have taken plus ones retrieved from a graphic search engine. Create two or three slide shows from the library. Include a screen shot of the slide sorter window for one of your shows. Create a photo page for your website.

The article on educational use and abuse of presentations software explains that professors are writing sentences or even paragraphs on their slides. Students who love to take notes are slowing the class pace since they are asking the professor to display each slide for a long time, since the student are trying to write everything that is in the slide. Professors are using slides that are hard to see. They are using font colors that do not meet the requirements of the design slide since they have modified their background to their slides. Professors tend to speed the slides when there is less than five minutes left of class without explaining their slides. Thus, students do not like power point presentations.

Figure 5 demonstrates a power point presentation that I have created for the IEEE outreach program in the past. The IEEE outreach program visited three middle schools Nobel Middle Schools, Holmes Middle School, and Olive Vista Middle School. Some of the pictures are demonstrated on my picture webpage. I have modified this power point presentation to prevent the use and abuse of presentations. I did not have the preset animations for my words or sentences. My pictures were appearing with the text preventing the students from paying attention. However, with the help of Dr. Herr I was able to improve my power point presentation for the IEEE outreach program. I have also learned how to create a slide show in iPhoto. Figure 6 demonstrates a slide show on iPhoto. The iPhoto will help me demonstrate pictures of famous mathematicians. (5) Other resources: Complete three of the following, using content related to your curriculum whenever possible.

• Use Timeliner to create a timeline relevant to the curriculum you teach. • Develop an educational digital video. • Construct a professional resume using Word. • Develop a concept map with graphics and text. • Create a crossword puzzle or other puzzle relevant to your class. • Create and conduct an on-line survey form for one of your classes. • (a) Find the lowest cost of a specific piece of equipment (projector, computer,

digital camera, etc.) for your classroom, (b) identify the next national conference for your discipline, AND (c) determine the best airfare to attend the conference.

Figure 7 demonstrates a screen capture of my resume. I have created a resume in word document. These resume with help me obtain a mathematicians or engineering position. I have included my job experience and the course that I have completed in engineering and in mathematics. I have posted my concept map on my website. The concept map represent the schedule for the semester on Algebra One A. Figure 8 demonstrates a word search puzzle that I have created in http://www.puzzle-maker.com/. The puzzle is a word search puzzle that will help my English Language Learners (ELL) students since they will learn vocabulary words in mathematics. Puzzle maker it is easy to use and I recommend it to all of the teachers. Figure 9 demonstrates the next conference for NCTM. The next conference is on August 2 to 5, 2006. It is in Virginia and the lowest cost for an airline is 364 dollars. The airplane will depart from Los Angeles International airport and arrive in Baltimore. I will depart at 7:10 P.M. on August the second. I will return to Los Angeles at 5:10 A.M. Figure 11 demonstrates the lowest cost of Texas Instruments TI-89. I need a TI-89 to demonstrate to my class three-dimensional figures. The lowest cost for a TI-89 is 34 dollars since NexTag has filtered the lowest cost of a TI-89.
