Vision for Curriculum Together we will work toward: Type your answer in the text box.1. Richness

Developing an awareness that there are layers of meaning to an idea/concept; openness to finding patterns and connections and exploring the multiple possibilities and interpretations

Tapping into natural curiosity and questions about the world to drive the curriculum Asking questions throughout an investigative process to continually deepen our understanding Being comfortable with “not knowing” or not having the “correct answer”

EXAMPLE:

Developing an awareness that there are layers of meaning to an idea/concept; openness to finding patterns and connections and exploring the multiple possibilities and interpretations

I am confident in finding patterns and making connections with scientific concepts. I enjoy working with the unknown and trying to create my own understanding by linking it to things I have already experienced or learned in the classroom.

Tapping into natural curiosity and questions about the world to drive the curriculumI am not confident about allowing natural curiosity and questions to drive the curriculum. I’m the type of person who likes to have specific assignments with specific answers. It is difficult for me to trust that all things will get covered by allowing the students to drive the curriculum.

Beginning: Explain the thinking behind your ranking at this time.

Type your answer here.

Developing an awareness that there are layers of meaning to an idea/concept; openness to finding patterns and connections and exploring the multiple possibilities and interpretations SOMEWHAT CONFIDENT- It is sometimes hard for me to think through other interpretations

Tapping into natural curiosity and questions about the world to drive the curriculumCONFIDENT- I find this to be helpful in the learning process.

Asking questions throughout an investigative process to continually deepen our understandingCONFIDENT- I like asking questions until I fully grasp a concept.

Being comfortable with “not knowing” or not having the “correct answer” NOT CONFIDENT- I like to be right for sure, and I want to know when I am.

Middle: Explain things that are confirmed or changed or confusing.

Developing an awareness that there are layers of meaning to an idea/concept; openness to finding patterns and connections and exploring the multiple possibilities and interpretations CONFIDENT- What comes to mind directly is the assignment with the dice and the names on each side. There were actually more than one supported answers. That sort of proved to me, there are multiple answers and will often be in this class. Just worry about supporting your answer and you will be correct.

Tapping into natural curiosity and questions about the world to drive the curriculumCONFIDENT- It’s easier to learn when it’s a question that truly concerns you. When looking for a Myth Buster’s assignment I looked for an episode that covered a question I was truly curious about, it makes it more applicable.

Asking questions throughout an investigative process to continually deepen our understandingCONFIDENT- This widens your understanding, it’s frustrating for sure though. Just when you feel as if you have something where you need it in the inquiry process, there’s often that

question that pops up and makes you reconsider.

Being comfortable with “not knowing” or not having the “correct answer” NOT CONFIDENT- I know it is something I will be alright with down the road, but I am too competitive. If I put time into something I want to be right, or at least believe I am.

End: Explain why your ideas changed or didn’t change as a result of this class

Developing an awareness that there are layers of meaning to an idea/concept; openness to finding patterns and connections and exploring the multiple possibilities and interpretations

Tapping into natural curiosity and questions about the world to drive the curriculum Asking questions throughout an investigative process to continually deepen our understanding Being comfortable with “not knowing” or not having the “correct answer”

I can now say that I am CONFIDENT in all of these areas as a result of this class. I think I finally realized that the process is more important than the result. I can admit that it took some frustration to get there, but that is what it is all about.

meaning do these words really have to you? Recording your learning experiences for the purpose of reflection and further understanding Referring to those reflections and examining what you understood at that time while looking for

connections to newly constructed knowledge and applying this new understanding to questions and problems

Beginning: Explain the thinking behind your ranking at this time.

Re-examine “scientific words and phrases” that you remember, read, or hear from others. What meaning do these words really have to you?CONFIDENT- Re-examining is often helpful to me to better learn something.

Recording your learning experiences for the purpose of reflection and further understandingSOMEWHAT CONFIDENT- I don’t always like to reflect, but I agree it helps.

Referring to those reflections and examining what you understood at that time while looking for connections to newly constructed knowledge and applying this new understanding to questions and problemsCONFIDENT- making connections can make a topic seem so much more understandable.

Middle: Explain things that are confirmed or changed or confusing.

Re-examine “scientific words and phrases” that you remember, read, or hear from others. What meaning do these words really have to you?CONFIDENT- Just because I perceive a word or phrase to mean something does not mean I am correct. I have found that out in dealing with the science from some of our investigations. Particularly when we dealt with liquids, solids, and gasses.

Recording your learning experiences for the purpose of reflection and further understandingCONFIDENT- Like I said, I am starting to see the purpose in this. The scientific journals have been a good example of this statement.

Referring to those reflections and examining what you understood at that time while looking for connections to newly constructed knowledge and applying this new understanding to questions and problemsNOT CONFIDENT- I cannot really think of a time where this has happened yet.

End: Explain why your ideas changed or didn’t change as a result of this class.

connections to newly constructed knowledge and applying this new understanding to questions and problems

CONFIDENT now as a result of this class. Some of the connections I made early in the class, I was able to apply to something later in the course. For example, when we were first taught that frustration can lead to learning, I was able to connect that to an experiment done following that. All through the course when the going got tough, I knew to stick it out and I would learn more as a result.

3. Relations Engaging in dialogue with others as we work together to deepen understanding – learning

involves the community of learners Reflecting on how you are making sense of your learning process and science content both

individually and as group Sharing your ideas (i.e. questions, thoughts, concerns, confusion, etc.) openly with others in

group and class discussions so group thinking can occur

Beginning: Explain the thinking behind your ranking at this time.

Engaging in dialogue with others as we work together to deepen understanding – learning involves the community of learnersCONFIDENT- I like the thought of helping others understand because I realize I may be the one who needs understanding.

Reflecting on how you are making sense of your learning process and science content both individually and as groupNOT CONFIDENT DON’T UNDESTAND- I am not completely sure how to rate this statement.

Sharing your ideas (i.e. questions, thoughts, concerns, confusion, etc.) openly with others in group and class discussions so group thinking can occur CONFIDENT- I have always enjoyed class discussions, it puts things in perspective.

Middle: Explain things that are confirmed or changed or confusing.

Engaging in dialogue with others as we work together to deepen understanding – learning involves the community of learnersCONFIDENT- I feel a sense of accomplishment when working as a team to understand something. For instance, when we did the investigation on Mr. Xavier, I felt as if my group did a great job of discussing the possibilities. I thought our version of the story was very unique, yet supported from all of the evidence.

Reflecting on how you are making sense of your learning process and science content both individually and as groupSOMEWHAT CONFIDENT- I think I am just now getting the hang of the learning process. There have been a few struggles so far but that is to be expected and helpful as well.

Sharing your ideas (i.e. questions, thoughts, concerns, confusion, etc.) openly with others in group and class discussions so group thinking can occur I haven’t felt as if my ideas were “shot down.” But I appreciate when someone shows me why I could be wrong. I have been happy with my group so far and how we communicate. I seem to question things a lot and might slow the process down and I can see my group getting frustrated with that. However, I know it is nothing personal and I get frustrated as well. It is like you said for sure, we are all adults, in every workplace there is people in which we do not get along with. If we can’t work together now, then we have some serious working on ourselves to do!

CONFIDENT now even though I was pretty comfortable with these areas to begin with. I really enjoyed the group aspect of the class. Working together and sharing ideas as a group can be a rewarding process if you allow it to be. I think I learned how to better see other perspectives and how other people may be thinking, that is incredibly important to learn as a teacher

4. Rigor Becoming aware that learning is a complex multi-dimensional process and that we will have

more questions than we can answer completely at this Finding some resolution to an “I-need-to-know” question while aware that there is always more

to be learned about the concept Making inferences based on multiple observations and checking their viability in accordance with

your understanding at that time. Developing ‘working explanations’ that synthesize what you are thinking, evidence from your

investigations, and ideas from others

Beginning: Explain the thinking behind your ranking at this time.

Becoming aware that learning is a complex multi-dimensional process and that we will have more questions than we can answer completely at this SOMEWHAT CONFIDENT- I usually like to have my questions answered but I realize that can’t always be the case.

Finding some resolution to an “I-need-to-know” question while aware that there is always more to be learned about the conceptSOMEWHAT CONFIDENT- there is often times always more to learn and I understand that.

Making inferences based on multiple observations and checking their viability in accordance with your understanding at that time. NOT CONFIDENT DON’T UNDERSTAND- to be honest I do not know yet how to rate this.

Developing ‘working explanations’ that synthesize what you are thinking, evidence from your investigations, and ideas from others NOT CONFIDENT DON’T UNDERSTAND- I do not yet know how to rate this statement at this time.

Middle: Explain things that are confirmed or changed or confusing.

Becoming aware that learning is a complex multi-dimensional process and that we will have more questions than we can answer completely at this SOMEWHAT CONFIDENT- I do not prefer it to be that way, where you struggle in the process of learning, because of course I would rather it be easy. I do recognize that the process will sometimes be hard and that I will be better for it.

Finding some resolution to an “I-need-to-know” question while aware that there is always more to be learned about the concept

CONFIDENT- I have found that even after you support a claim in an investigation, there are so many variables that are left unanswered and more research that could be done. Like with the radiometer, our group feels as if we have a conclusion, but there are many unanswered questions I still have.

Making inferences based on multiple observations and checking their viability in accordance with your understanding at that time. CONFIDENT- When you make a claim, it is a good learning experience to test it and back it up with evidence.

Developing ‘working explanations’ that synthesize what you are thinking, evidence from your investigations, and ideas from others SOMEWHAT CONFIDENT- I know that this is ultimately the goal, I guess I just haven’t experienced a whole lot of success yet. But I know that I will soon, I can see my progression just in the little time so far.

End: Explain why your ideas changed or didn’t change as a result of this class.

Becoming aware that learning is a complex multi-dimensional process and that we will have more questions than we can answer completely at this

Making inferences based on multiple observations and checking their viability in accordance with your understanding at that time.

Developing ‘working explanations’ that synthesize what you are thinking, evidence from your investigations, and ideas from others

CONFIDENT. I changed in these areas a lot as a result of this class. True learning is a process. Learning is so much more complex than a simple statement being said and heard by the student. It is important to develop questions and make many observations to help better your understanding of a topic.

EDUC 224What I am Thinking Now - Expectations

Class Expectations:

1. Attend all class sessions. Notify instructor of absence by email and take responsibility to learn about missed experiences from your group.  In class credit cannot be made up.  Absences may lower your final grade because class activities require participation to earn points. See syllabus.

Beginning: If you don’t think you will be able to attend class on time and/or regularly, explain the difficult you foresee so we can discuss it.

I have to get an A in this class, I am not going to lie you have me a little intimidated from the schedule but I will be here every week and get all the easy points I can.

Middle: Explain your attendance pattern to date and whether you need to modify it for the rest of the class.

I have attended every class session so far. I must admit, even though class can sometimes be frustrating, I look forward to the class. I plan on being present and on time for the remainder as well.

End: If you had problems with attendance this semester, explain your situation here.

I believe I attended every class this semester! Cut it close one week when I was sick but managed to make it.

2. Participate fully in all class sessions by working collaboratively with peers, asking questions and taking responsibility for developing your "scientific self".

Beginning: Explain the thinking behind your ranking at this time.

Confident, I will participate and try my best to learn from this course.

Middle: How are you doing in this regard? Look at the Participation Sheet.

I feel as if I participate as I should. Perhaps I could a little more. I think I am gaining a little more confidence in what we are doing in class, so that should effect it.

End: If you had problems with participation this semester, explain your situation here.

I feel as if I should have participated a little more in the class, not that I did not participate, I just wish I would have realized from the start how good of a learning opportunity this class is. You have done a great job in teaching this course.

3. Type or word process all major assignments (double space,12 pt font, see guidelines in syllabus) and submit documents as instructed.

Beginning: Explain if this is a problem.

No problem, sounds good to me!

Middle: How are you doing?

Good, once you corrected my mistake of adding a space after a paragraph I think I have it down. That was something I needed to learn for APA style, so thanks!

End: If you had problems with requirement this semester, explain your situation here.

Not a problem.

4. Give each assignment enough time to apply your best thinking and writing skills. I assume that what you submit is your best work and grade it accordingly.

Beginning: If you think there will be a problem, let me know here and talk with me.

I want to do my best, let me know at any time if I am not displaying A work/effort.

Middle: How are you doing?

I believe I am giving each assignment enough time to do it well, I tend to procrastinate. However, I am doing better.

End: If you had problems with doing your best this semester, explain your situation here.

I tried hard this semester in all of my classes.

Preferences in Ways of Learning

Rate each statement below with 4 (most preferred) 3, 2, 1 (least preferred)

1. I like to learn by:

Beg Mid End

3 3 3 having the information presented by an instructor and/or a book and my job is to learn what is presented.

3 4 4 reading and listening to explanations but also by asking questions during class and working to make sense of the material.

3 2 2 figuring out answers on my own by doing my own investigations and research.

4 4 4 working with a group to do investigations, discuss what we are doing, and work together to understand new or different ideas or results.

other (type statement here)

Beginning: Explain the thinking behind your ranking

I like to work by myself and investigate to find an answer. However, I also like group work and sharing ideas to help find an answer.

Middle: Explain why your preferences have or have not changed at this time.

I actually have gone through a change in this regard. Previously, I would have preferred that I work alone. I usually feel that without distractions I can get more done. However, I have really enjoyed having others thoughts sort of guide my own thinking. I believe I would rather do inquiry in a group now for sure.

End: Summarize your thinking about this section related to this course. How might this experience influence you in the future?

3 2 2 individual work (papers, lab reports, or assignments) that I do by myself.

4 4 4 group projects where we get a group grade.

4 4 4 group projects where we learn together but we get graded on our own work.

3 4 2 taking quizzes and tests.

2 4 3 writing about what I’m doing, thinking, questioning, and/or feeling and why.

other (type statement here)

Beginning: Explain the thinking behind your ranking

I Am fine with both individual and group work, hard to even say which I prefer. However, I’m not one to really write and analyze what I am doing while I am doing it.

Middle: Explain why your preferences have or have not changed at this time.

I am not one to take many notes or write down what I am doing, I just have never been that way. I must say, that the scientific journals have help though. I do have to make myself write it down as we complete tasks during class, but I like to be able to look back at it and remind myself what we did. It does help.

3 3 3 occasionally talking with one person or in a small group

3 4 4 asking questions, sharing ideas, and working in a small group.

4 4 4 asking questions, sharing ideas, and providing leadership in a small group

4 3 4 asking questions and sharing ideas in large group discussions

3 3 4 presenting my ideas to the whole class

Beginning: Explain the thinking behind your ranking

I like to talk and share ideas. In most scenarios I enjoy being the leader. I can be quiet, although I do not prefer to be.

Middle: Explain why your preferences have or have not changed at this time.

My preferences are the same for the most part. However, I have noticed that I haven’t necessarily been a “leader” in any of my groups. I usually like to lead, especially with small groups, but I do not really know if any one person has been a leader in a group that I have been in. I guess I have realized that I am kind of new at this inquiry thing and just enjoyed all of us sharing ideas and no one person taking control. Maybe that will change in this last half?
