math mystery:case of the disappearing

donuts__________ 2032Something strange has been going on across the town of Mathhattan! There have been several reports about donuts disappearing into thin air . . . literally! While it definitely would make Mathhattan a healthier place, people still should be allowed to have a choice when it comes to eating a special treat.

David, a victim who has experienced this with over a dozen donuts, stated “I’d have a donut in my hand and before my eyes it would just disappear into nothing! It’s happened so many times, I’m thinking I’m just going to have to switch to muffins instead. This is surely some sort of horrible magic trick!”

Doug, the King of the Donut Diner complained, “This sort of magical mischief has been ruining my business! Customers are no longer returning because they are afraid their donut will disappear. Whoever is behind this must be stopped!”

It is clear that someone with magical abilities is behind this nuisance, so an investigation has begun to search for this mystical disappearing donut trickster.

MATH DETECTIVE NEEDED TO FIND WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DISAPPEARING DONUTS

The police have made a list of all the possible magical suspects. However, they need a super detective with math skills to help them solve this case. Working with decimals are a key skill needed to crack the five clues. Let’s hope this trickster can be found so that people in Mathhattan can enjoy donuts again without any fear of losing them!

ROUNDING DECIMALS – CLUE 3

I’m pretty sure I saw a man making donuts disappear.

I think I saw an elf playing with magic around the donut shop.

A strange gentlemen has been carrying around a lot of donuts.

There has been an elf running around town casting all sorts of silly tricks.

Rumor has it that the wizards in town are stocking up on donuts for the winter.

A cloaked gnome has been wandering around with his spell book.

I saw a mysteriouswoman sitting in the back corner of the donut shop.

It must be one of those cheeky fairies! They love playing tricks.

I heard that someone has been using an orb to make the donuts disappear.

I could hear a female voice chanting a disappearing donut spell.

Apparently, the elves use the donuts for a special celebration to bring them good luck.

It was that greedy Wizard who wouldn’t grant me a wish!

My friend said, that her friend saw a man with over a thousand donuts in his car.

I think that fairies need donuts to regenerate their magic, so it probably is one of them.

I saw a wizard weaving his magic around the donut shop.

I spotted an elf using a wand near people in the park eating donuts.

In the grid below you will find a number of clues that the police collected, however unfortunately only one of them is correct. Complete the rounding questions, then look

for your answers in the statement boxes and cross out that box (meaning that the statement in that box has been eliminated). The one statement box left standing after

completing all of the questions, is the one with the correct clue!

PROBLEM OF THE WEEK (5.M.NBT.07 The Highly Proficient student can add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals to hundredths place using models or drawings in

real world situations and explain their reasoning.) Read the problem and Underline the Question Jake was working hard to raise money to buy himself a new dirt bike. He saw the latest and greatest dirt bike in a store front window, a brand new, sparkling orange XTC-Range 2000!! He looked at the price tag and saw an awfully big number...the bike cost $2,903.76. He had his work cut out for him. He and his parents negotiated a chore plan, where Jake could make $3.15 a day, Monday-Friday doing household jobs. He worked for 32 weeks. On the weekends, he made $12.45 per hour bagging groceries, he worked 4 hours every weekend for the same 32 weeks.

After 32 weeks of work, how much money will Jake have earned? How much money does he still need in order to afford the XTC-Range 2000?

He puts all of his earned money toward the bike. For the remaining balance, he is able make equal payments each month until he pays off the bike. How much will his payment be if he decides to pay off the bike in 6 months? 9 months? 12 months?

Justify Your Answer and Explain how you got there.

Coding Puzzle: What can you do to make the world awesome? Code the puzzles to find the answer.

Challenge Puzzle: In this challenge puzzle, you are going to follow the code given. Start with the dot in the middle of the grid and follow each line of code to see what you create!

If you need anything from me, or want to share your work, please feel free to email me at [email protected]

Enrich Writing Activity

Directions: - Select a book you have around the house. I recommend a picture book or very short chapter book. It is best to choose a book you have read several times and are familiar.

- Your task is to rewrite the story as play to be acted out. Decide the main characters of the story and write their lines (the dialogue). Can you act out the play at home? Do you have family to be characters or are you each character?

OR

- Rewrite the story and add a new character. The character can be you, someone in your family, a friend…even one of your teachers or coaches!

- Illustrate your story

Remember what you have learned about the writing process. Brain storm, make a graphic organizer to help organize your thoughtsWrite with detail and use descriptive words

Write neatly!! No excuses - all it takes is practice. When you are writing you are using a specific part of your brain (the cerebrum). You use even more of it when you write in cursive.

Use your imagination and have fun!!!

Alternative Activity: - Select a book you have around the house. I recommend a picture book or very short chapter book. It is best to choose a book you have read several times and are familiar.

- Rewrite the ending to the story by either completely changing it or adding to the story. Instead of it ending, you continue the story.

OR

- Make your own drawings for each page

We are going to participate in “Sousa’s March Mania,” a competition in which students rally behind their favorite marches as they advance through a series of match-ups and onto the championship game! Each week two marches compete head-to-head, while votes for the favorite march determines which one advances to the next round. This March Mania will be a dogfight like no other! Which marches will make it from the Enlisted Eight, and Fidelis Four to the final round? That’s for you to decide. Students are encouraged to fill out a bracket before the competition begins to see if they can predict the winner. Anyone with the winning march on their bracket, completed prior to the first match, can call themselves an honorary " March King!” Listen to this week’s marches here: Moorside March by Gustav Holst: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BX-P23NUNT4&list=PLA7no0L9zTk5GMgztf2rTijfVCaq-rehU&index=14 March of the Toys by Victor Herbert https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vg1M0u_5isY&list=PLA7no0L9zTk5GMgztf2rTijfVCaq-rehU&index=22 Vote for your favorite here: https://forms.gle/4T9WZUMaS38X7G7i8
