Specialization: Starting with their 3rd semester, students choose to specialize in “Construction Management” or “Construction Engineering”

Key learning outcomes Graduates of this program with a major in “Construction Management” will have acquired the knowledge and the practical skills that enable them to deal with all major economic, organisational, and legal aspects of the construction industry. Graduates with a major in “Construction Engineering” will have been prepared for the challenges of production planning, organization, and monitoring in companies responsible for carrying out construction projects.

Profile of the program While the “Construction Management” major was conceived so that the course content fulfilled all the attributes of a Business Administration and Engineering course targeted at the construction market, the “Construction Engineering” major delivers knowledge in the areas of production, finance, and management.

As a compulsory component of the program a one-semester work placement in the 5th semester allows students to apply in industry what they have learned up to this stage. For “Construction Management” majors, the internship can be conducted, for instance, in a company dealing with project development, project management, facility management, or in real estate. “Construction Engineering” majors, on the other hand, can gain work experience in construction firms, planning offices, building authorities, or in construction site management.

Occupational profiles of graduates

“Construction Management” majors will go on to work with companies involved in construction investment, project management, general contracting, ready-to-use constructions, consulting etc. “Construction Engineering” majors, on the other hand, will go on to work in roles ranging from draftsman, planning engineer, surveyor or plant manager (for instance in pre-fabricated section plants) to site manager in planning offices, with authorities, or on construction companies, and right up to top company-management positions.

Specific admission requirements

General or subject-specific university entrance qualification or comparable entrance qualification. Ranking is created using weighted grades for the university entrance qualification grade (factor 5) and the individual subjects of mathematics (factor 3), German or appropriate language for a foreign entrance qualification (factor 2), English (factor 2), physics/chemistry/biology (factor 2). Bonus points are awarded for a vocational qualification (4 points) or demonstration of at least one year’s work experience (3 points). For students from abroad: proof of satisfactory knowledge of

German.

Specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning

Vocational training at “Meister” level or acquired at a school for further vocational training, together with an interview at HsKA, will be recognized as equivalent to university entrance qualification. 2-year vocational training followed by 3-year occupation in a related job, together with an interview at HsKA and an eligibility exam at Konstanz University of Applied Sciences, will be recognized as equivalent to university entrance qualification. Results achieved in theory or practical courses of an academic degree program at a recognized higher education institution can be transferred to HsKA according to ECTS recognition procedures upon express request, if the Committee of Tri-national Civil Engineering Studies acknowledges these results to be comparable in terms of level, subject content and extent. Prior learning must be in a similar or related subject.

The annex also shows the weight of the various examinations towards the final grade. All parts which count towards a subject examination must be concluded successfully with a mark no less than 4.0 each.
