Cause & Effect Essay Personal Reflection
(over)
You will produce a final revised copy of your cause and effect piece to hand in. In addition
to this, you need to type a personal reflection of this piece of writing. It needs to be at least one
full page in length, but no longer than two. Please follow the Heading info in the top right corner
and the bolded title, above. Please single space and use 12 point font. Please proofread!
Your reflection piece should be in paragraph form. You should discuss what you learned
about yourself as a writer and what you learned about your writing skills after analyzing your
cause and effect essay.
You must address the following bulleted items:
Provide a response to creating this essay as a collaborative effort with a partner(s). What was
your role/explain your writing contributions to the essay? What were the advantages of
working with a partner? What were the challenges? Would you like to write collaboratively
again or would you prefer to write independently?
Tell Mrs. Mixdorf the ways your essay improved from the fused draft. You need to provide
enough detailed information to earn full points for the improvement of your paper from fused
draft to final copy. Be specific and use examples.
Identify your thesis. Was it challenging to create a thesis for this type of essay?
How do you know that you indeed have a cause-and-effect essay? What evidence do you
have in your piece of writing? Why did you decide on causes/effects/or both? Why? Did you
take steps to avoid Post Hoc reasoning? Do you explore main causes/effects as well as
contributory causes/effects? Do you point out immediate causes and remote causes? Explain.
Do you feel like you are strong at this type of writing, or do you feel like you have some
weaknesses to strengthen with this form of writing? Do you think you elaborated enough?
When looking over the six traits of writing (the pink handout) where do you see your
strengths as shown through this particular piece of writing? Where do you see a need for
improvement? What evidence (or lack of) do you have in your paper that backs up your
opinion? How did working collaboratively with a partner assist you with the six traits?
Quote two or three of your favorite phrases or sentences from your paper and explain why
you like them. Be specific! Does it give the reader a specific clear map to follow? Do you
have a particularly exceptional sentence with strong word choice?
Assess how well you have carried over skills and strategies from previous essays into this
essay. Did you use any narration, description, or exemplification in your writing? Explain.
Some other ideas you may incorporate in your personal reflection include:
Comment on your use of transitions. Did these come naturally to you as you wrote your
process, or did you have to insert them when you were revising?
Give an objective review where you concentrate on the concrete items you like or dislike in
your paper. Perhaps you have several misspelled words or your peer reviewers identified
fragments or run-ons.
Give a subjective review where you concentrate on your opinion of the piece. Do you like
reading this cause and effect essay? Why or why not?
Write about other realizations you’ve had about yourself as a writer, about the writing
process, and/or about peer reviews these past two months.
