2016 A-STATE HOMECOMING IMPORTANT REMINDERS

“Welcome to Howlywood”

Below is a list of important reminders to ensure everyone has a fun and exciting 2016 Homecoming experience. Please read each of these reminders carefully.

First, we feel it is important to outline what constitutes “Howlywood.” When incorporating the theme into your Homecoming events, please know Howlywood is inclusive to celebrities, feature films, television, and music. This theme is broad so that you may have fun with it and celebrate your favorite celebrities and aspects of Hollywood, while showcasing your A-State school spirit!

If event details must be changed for any reason, Rachel Lovell & Robert Morris, SAB Homecoming Directors, or Morgan Crain, Assistant Dean of Student Activities, will contact the individual listed as the primary contact for the event.

All forms must be turned in to the Leadership Center in the Reng Student Union, Suite 2067, by Monday, October 3, 2016, no later than 4:00 p.m. Please note this includes all event registration forms, Little Mr. & Miss A-State forms, and Homecoming King & Queen Nomination forms. Deadlines will be strictly enforced.

The mandatory Homecoming Participant meeting will occur at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2016, in the St. Francis River Room, located on the 3rd floor of the Reng Student Union. One representative from each organization must be present for this meeting. However, Homecoming Court nominees do not need to attend this meeting.

Please be respectful of all other organizations and A-State staff members throughout Homecoming Week. Unsportsmanlike or rude behavior will not be tolerated.

Please be mindful to pick up after yourself and your organization at each event to ensure we keep the campus of Arkansas State University beautiful!

2016 A-STATE HOMECOMING JUDGING CONSIDERATIONS“Welcome to Howlywood”

Below are suggestions to consider when preparing for the variety of Homecoming events. While some descriptions may not apply to each event, these considerations will be given to the judges for applicable events to take into consideration when judging.

Creativity: How intriguing and creative is every aspect of the entry? Does the entry represent intricate detailed efforts? Does the entry clearly indicate what organization decorated/created it?

Originality: How unique is the entry overall? How intriguing & unique is the entry being judged?

Adherence to Theme: Does the entry clearly represent & incorporate the Homecoming theme? Does the entry provide a clever interpretation of the theme? Is the entry respectful, appropriate, and tasteful?

Appeal & School Spirit: Does the entry showcase the organization’s school spirit, and appeal to the crowd? Does the entry reflect the history, traditions, and spirit of the University? Does the entry appeal to the general A-State population? What are the judges’ overall impressions of the entry?

Crowd Appeal: Does the entry engage, excite, and appeal to the entire audience? Does the entry reflect the history, traditions, and spirit of the University? What is the judges’ overall impression of the entry?

Time: Does the entry/participant meet the time requirements outlined for the event?

PHOTO CONTEST INFORMATION“Welcome to Howlywood”

SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD

This award is given to the student group that exhibits the ideals of sportsmanship, including civility, honesty, unselfishness, respect, and responsibility throughout the entire week Homecoming. This includes good sportsmanship on social media sites. It is our hope each student participating in Homecoming has a positive experience showing their #PackPride! The winner will be announced at the Homecoming football game.

PHOTO CONTEST

Lights, Camera, ACTION! We want to see your best Homecoming shot! One winner will be chosen each day, October 10-14.

To win you must: Follow or Like SAB, & tag SAB in your photo (@astatesab for Twitter and Instagram, A-

State Student Activities Board for Facebook). Use the Homecoming hashtag #WelcomeToHOWLywood Keep all pictures appropriate and tasteful Pictures can be of individuals, groups or action shots but only the individual posting the

photo will receive the winning prize.

HOMECOMING T-SHIRT SALES

The Homecoming t-shirt sales will be held Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday in the Reng Student Union Campus Information Booth from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm while supplies last. Only cash or checks (made payable to Arkansas State University) will be accepted for t-shirt sales.

BANNER COMPETITIONMonday, October 10, 2016 at 10:00 am

Location: Leadership Center, Reng Student Union 2nd Floor

Competition Rules

1. A sheet will be provided to each organization wishing to participate in the event. The sheets will be distributed during the mandatory Homecoming meeting on Wednesday, October 5, 2016.

2. Banner must display the theme and spirit of Homecoming and Arkansas State. Also, the name of the organization must be displayed on the front of banner.

3. Banners will be shaped as stars this year. Banners must be designed to hang accordingly. Each star will be labeled as to how it will be hung (i.e. top, bottom, etc.).

4. No oil paint, Elmer’s glue, or glitter will be accepted.

5. No heavy, sharp, or otherwise, dangerous objects will be permitted. Objects cannot protrude off banner more than a quarter of an inch (.25”). It is not required to add any objects to the banner.

6. Banner must be turned in by 10:00 am on Monday, October 10, 2016, to the Leadership Center located on the 2nd floor of the Reng Student Union, Suite 2067. Banners must be submitted dry.

7. Banners will be displayed at the A-State football game. Any organization that wishes to keep their banner should take the sheet down immediately following the game. All others will be discarded during stadium clean up.

8. A complete sketch of the banner should be submitted with the packet on Monday, October 3, 2016.

9. Judging will occur on Monday, October 10, 2016, and winners will be announced on Monday, October 10, 2016, during the Homecoming Step Show.

“STEPPING WITH THE STARS” HOMECOMING STEP SHOWMonday, October 10, 2016 at 7:00 pmLocation: A-State Convocation Center

Competition Rules1. All students and student organizations are encouraged to participate, but each student

organization is allowed to sponsor only one performance.

2. All participating individuals and organizations must be present and ready to perform at the Convocation Center by 6:15 pm on October 10, 2016; however, the Convocation Center will be available for rehearsal starting at 5:00 pm. Only individuals directly involved in the group’s step show performance (music individual included) will have access to the Convocation Center. All other individuals should enter at the Red Entrance when the doors open at 6:00p. No seats will be allowed to be saved.

3. The show must be no longer than 12 minutes in length. Points will only be deducted if an organization goes over the 12 minute time limit. No deductions will occur if the show remains within the 0-12 time allotment.

4. Participants will draw for the performance order during the mandatory Homecoming meeting, and participants will then do their walk through in the reverse order during the rehearsal time, if they choose to do a walk through. The walk through will primarily be used to check music and positioning of each portion of the participants’ show, but will not be used to practice the entire routine. The Leadership Center is working closely with the Convocation Center staff to ensure that the sound check and music is smooth. Each organization will be allowed seven minutes to do their walk through. Only the organization that is practicing during that time will be allowed in the building. All participants will be invited back into the building through the Green Entrance when doors open. Only those participating in the program will be allowed to enter via the Green Entrance all other guests will enter through the Red Entrance.

5. Music should be on either a formatted CD or USB drive AS WELL AS an iPad/iPhone. One copy of the formatted CD or USB drive must be turned in to the Leadership Center by 11:00 am on Friday, October 7, 2016. The organization may choose which format they prefer to use on the event day during the music test at the Convocation Center. All songs played must be edited for content and must not have any profanity.

6. Attire during the event should remain tasteful and appropriate for this type of performance.

7. Be respectful of all participating organizations, judges, and A-State staff! Disrespectful and unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated, and groups may be disqualified.

List and describe any props that will be used during Step Show. The SAB Advisor must approve all props before the event. An SAB representative will provide the contact person listed above with a list of approved props by 5 pm on Friday, October 7. If a prop is not approved but used during the performance, the organization will be disqualified. All approved props must be free standing. Props may not be attached to chairs, rails, walls, etc. within the Convocation Center. All organizations’ props are to be removed from the Convocation Center immediately following Step Show. Even if you wish to discard your props please do not leave them in the Convocation Center. If any mascots or other individuals that are not a part of your organization are stepping with you, please make a note of this below as well.

SURVEY SAYS: HOWLYWOOD EDITIONTuesday, October 11, 2016

Showtimes: 3:00pm | 5:00pmLocation: Centennial Hall, Reng Student Union 3rd Floor

1. Contestants will be chosen at random from the audience to compete in Survey Says: Howlywood Edition. Anyone in the audience has a chance at being on the winning team!

2. Howlywood dress is encouraged. Come as celebrities, movie and television characters, musicians, etc. Our SAB representatives will be scanning the crowd for eye-catching characters to be a part of Survey Says!

3. At the door, a sign-in sheet will be present. We ask all individuals who are affiliated with an organization that is competing during Homecoming Week to sign in. Participation points will be awarded to organizations who are present at Survey Says.

4. SAB representatives will be watching for organizations who are noticeably spirited at this event. Organizations that are interactive during the showtime(s) and show support for fellow organization members on-stage or otherwise will be awarded extra points toward the Sportsmanship Award, which will be awarded during the Homecoming football game on October 15.

5. The Survey Says game how host will explain all further instructions for the game itself before each showtime so that everyone clearly understands the rules of the game.

“CANS” FILM FESTIVAL COMPETITIONWednesday, October 12, 2016 at NOON

Location: Heritage Plaza LawnCompetition Rules

1. All students and organizations are encouraged to participate in this community service event to support the A-State Food Pantry. You do not have to participate in the competition to donate items or watch the structure judging. Please note the example photos from previous years in SAB’s Facebook photo albums. These are only examples and groups are encouraged to make their structure their own unique design.

2. This year, the structure should be assembled to recreate a film scene. (Examples: Spiderman swinging from building to building, passengers boarding the Titanic, Guardians of the Galaxy in their spaceship, etc.) Please use only appropriate film scenes.

3. SAB is encouraging the use as foreign objects (such as dolls, figurines, musical instruments, etc) in this event so long as the objects do not damage the food label or food packaging.

4. Any items from the list below can be used in the building of the structure. It is also encouraged to gather additional canned food items to donate outside of what you may need for the structure.

5. All labels must remain intact on the can or box in order to be judged. Cans and boxes cannot be disfigured in any way including, but not limited to: painting, removal of labels, etc. (The food labels must remain intact in order for the A-State Food Pantry to distribute the items).

6. Labels can be covered/wrapped as long as this does not damage the food label or packaging.7. No adhesive, glue or tape can be used to secure food items together. Structures must be free-

standing. You may use cardboard to separate layers if needed.

8. Organizations will have approximately a 7 feet x 7 feet space to construct their structure. A sign, no larger than 11 inches x 17 inches, should be clearly displayed on the structure recognizing the student organization.

9. A rough sketch of the structure should be submitted with the packet on Monday, October 3, 2016.

10. Each organization must have at least two (2) members help load cans into the food bank truck at the conclusion of the event at approximately 12:30 pm.

11. Organizations will have from 9:00 am – 11:45 am to build their structures. Judging will occur at noon and winners will be announced on SAB Social Media with pictures of all participants and winning structures.

Competition Rules

1. All students are encouraged to participate. Organizations will need to prepare a chant or cheer no longer than 3 minutes that showcases their A-State Spirit and incorporate the Howlywood theme.

2. Please be respectful of speakers and performances. Please do not cheer or chant over a speaker or another organization’s performance.

3. It is very important that your group is by the stage when the group who it set to perform immediately before you is preparing to perform. The order in which organizations will perform will be given during the mandatory Homecoming meeting. Should your group decide to no longer participate please notify SAB at [email protected] no later than Thursday, October 13, 2016 at Noon.

4. Unsportsmanlike conduct towards other organizations will not be tolerated.

5. Party poppers, silly string, confetti, or any object/device that would cause a mess will not be permitted. If you have a question about a device or object that may cause a mess please direct your question to [email protected].

6. Food trucks will be open for food starting at 6:30 pm. LIVE from the Red Carpet will begin at 7:30 pm and Yell Like Hell performances will begin at approximately 8:00 pm. If you are competing in Yell Like Hell, please be present at 7:30 pm.

Location: University Loop & Honors Avenue

1. Come dressed as a celebrity, movie or television character, or musician of your choice and walk the Red Carpet! Students who wish to dress up and walk the red carpet but are not competing in Homecoming with an organization may do so.

2. Group costumes are permitted.

3. The winner will be announced during the Yell Like Hell Competition to immediately follow.

4. The participant may dress up as any celebrity, movie/television character, or musician the individual chooses. However, in an effort to avoid having multiple individuals dressed as the same celebrity/character, please provide the first and second choice listed on the registration form. This will be decided on a first come/first serve basis. SAB will confirm which option is to be used during the mandatory meeting. Once your costume choice has been confirmed it cannot change. If this is an issue please contact Morgan Crain at [email protected].

5. Organizations that choose not to participate in the Homecoming Yell Like Hell event will still be able to compete in the costume contest, and vice versa. However, organizations/individuals that want to participate in both are welcome to as well.

6. Individuals wishing to walk the red carpet should be present at 7:00 pm.

7. If the individual you originally listed on the registration form is no longer able to participate and you wish to switch participants please email Morgan Crain at [email protected] prior to the time listed above.

Location: Centennial Bank Stadium Competition Rules

1. All organizations are encouraged to participate in the Red Wolf Walk Of Fame Competition. Only one art piece can be submitted per organization.

2. All student organizations participating in the Red Wolf Walk of Fame competition will be designated an area of concrete at Red Wolf Walk, located at Centennial Bank Stadium.

3. Only the art materials provided by the Student Activities Board will be permitted in this competition. These materials will be distributed during the mandatory Homecoming meeting.

4. There is no limit on the number of individuals from each organization that may help decorate the organization’s area of the Red Wolf Walk of Fame; however, only members of the organization may participate in crafting the organization display.

5. Any organization found engaging in activity that is deemed inappropriate or destructive in any way will be disqualified and referred to Judicial Affairs.

6. The Red Wolf Walk display must clearly incorporate the name of the organization in order to be eligible for judging.

7. Groups are required to submit a sketch of the Red Wolf Walk of Fame with the Homecoming Packet on October 3, 2016.

8. Red Wolf Walk of Fame will be available for decoration during the following hours:

Thursday, October 13 8am-8pm Friday, October 14 8am-11:45am

Please do not decorate your area of Red Wolf Walk of Fame outside of these hours. Judging will begin at noon at Friday, October 14.

“WELCOME TO HOWLYWOOD”KING AND QUEEN

RULES AND REGULATIONS1. Homecoming candidates may be nominated by any registered student organization. Organizations

prohibited to nominate a candidate include the core Leadership Groups: Student Activities Board, Student Government Association, IFC, NPC, & NPHC Councils, Wolftracks Yearbook, Volunteer A-State, and Pack Leaders. All other student organizations may sponsor no more than two (2) nominees; one King nominee and one Queen nominee. Each candidate should submit a nomination form, resume, and one (1) headshot in a .jpeg format on a jump drive or email which includes the candidate’s first & last name. This headshot will be used to announce all candidates running for Homecoming Court & King/Queen on the Leadership Center social networking sites. Please include as much detail as possible. The nomination forms, resume, and headshot photo are due in the Leadership Center no later than 4:00 p.m. on Monday, October 3, 2016.

2. Each nominee MUST HAVE AN ARKANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY CUMULATIVE GRADE POINT AVERAGE OF 2.75 OR BETTER (transfer work will not be counted), have earned at least 60 cumulative hours (transfer work included), be a full-time student (currently enrolled in 12 hours or more), and be in good standing with the University (no academic or disciplinary warnings). Each person may only serve on the Homecoming Court once.

3. The selection of the 2016 A-State Homecoming Court will be a TWO-STEP PROCESS. Homecoming Court representation will consist of an individual interview with the Homecoming Court Interview Committee and a collective vote from the entire student body. The top five male king nominees and top five female queen nominees will make up the Homecoming Court. The interview will carry a weight of 50 percent of the total points, while student vote will carry the other 50 percent of the total. The percentage breakdown will consist of 100 point system. The combination of the interview and the student body votes collectively will determine the 2016 Homecoming Court.

4. Nominees will be contacted to sign up for an interview time in the Leadership Center after grades are verified on Monday, October 3, 2016, via their A-State email. The interviews will be held on Friday, October 7, 2016, in the Reng Student Union Board Room. All nominees must be interviewed to be eligible for the Homecoming Court. The interview will consist of a variety of questions relating to student involvement, scholarship, campus activities, and community service. The ideal nominee should possess qualities that represent the Arkansas State University community. No current students will be serving on the selection committee. Past Homecoming Court members may be permitted to serve on the committee. The overall selection of the committee will be supervised by the Coordinator of Student Activities. Final approval of the committee is made by the Director of the Leadership Center.

5. Voting

Court Vote:Court voting will occur online through the https://webapps.astate.edu/survasu/ student portal. Voting will begin at 9:00am through the https://webapps.astate.edu/survasu / student portal on Friday, October 7, 2016, and close THE SAME DAY at 9:00pm. Online votes will be combined with the individual interview to determine the top ten 2016 Homecoming Court selections, five for King and five for Queen. Any A-State student with access to the in.astate portal can cast their vote. Each student has up to three votes for King and Queen. Each student is permitted to vote only once.

King & Queen Vote:King/Queen voting will begin at 9:00am through the https://webapps.astate.edu/survasu / student portal on Friday, October 14, 2016, and close THE SAME DAY at 9:00pm. The top male and female nominee from the court with the most votes will be selected as the 2016 Homecoming King and Queen. Each student is permitted to vote only once. Therefore, the King and Queen selection will be solely determined by the Arkansas State University student body.

6. There will be ten members of the Homecoming Court (five males and five females). In the event of a tie, scores from the interview process will break the tie.

7. Homecoming Court will be announced to the student body Monday, October 10, 2016, at the Homecoming Step Show, which begins at 7:00 pm at the A-State Convocation Center. Immediately following the Homecoming Step Show the Homecoming Court will come down to the Convocation Center floor for a brief meeting at the lower red entrance portion. This meeting is MANDATORY.

8. Homecoming Court Practice will most likely occur on Friday, October 15, 2016, at Centennial Bank Stadium. The time and date will be confirmed during the mandatory meeting after Step Show. The Homecoming Court will be recognized during the pre-game ceremonies on Saturday, October 14, 2016. At this time, the Homecoming King/Queen will be crowned and Lil Mr. & Miss A-State will be recognized. Court members may have up to two escorts.

9. Campaigning: Court Campaigning will officially begin at 9:00 am on Tuesday, October 4, 2016. King/Queen campaigning may officially begin at 9:00 am on Tuesday, October 11, 2016.

Homecoming Court & King/Queen Campaign Rules and Regulations are as follows: Campaigning is limited to social media, chalking sidewalks, and free speech areas only. No items

or fliers of any kind may be passed out. No signs or posters may be used to campaign. Displaying any form of campaign materials on any

University facilities (including yards and windows) is not permitted. Campaign materials are not allowed to be hung on Religious Organization Buildings, Fraternity, and/or Sorority Houses.

All campaigning must take place 100 ft from the Reng Student Union. No campaign materials or campaigning, verbal or otherwise, will be permitted in the Reng Student Union.

Creating polling sites is strictly prohibited.

10. By submitting this application you are giving the Leadership Center permission to verify your GPA and other information submitted within this application.

11. All rules will be strictly enforced. Any nomination form that is not fully completed will be terminated and not be allowed to participate in the Homecoming Court Election Process.

“Welcome to Howlywood”Little Mr. and Miss A-State

Crown Bearer and Flower Girl

The purpose of Little Mr. and Miss A-State is to allow children of the A-State Community the opportunity to participate in Homecoming festivities by presenting the Homecoming Queen her crown and flowers and the Homecoming King his gift at the Homecoming game. The Little Mr. and Miss will be recognized with the Homecoming Court on the field of Centennial Bank Stadium during the pre-game festivities on Saturday, October 15, 2016.

Guidelines

1. Children must be at or between the ages of five and eight years of age.

2. One (1) 4x6 photo must be turned in no later than 4:00 p.m. to the Leadership Center, by Monday, October 3, 2016. On the back of the photo please include the name of the child, age, parent’s name, address, and phone number so that the Leadership Center can contact you should we have any questions.

3. Please return this application and photo with the information requested to the Leadership Center, Reng Student Union Room #2067 on the A-State campus. Application and pictures can be mailed to the address below.
