SUCESSUFUL PROJECTS THOUGHOUT HIS JOURNEY Ar. Wooi Lok Kuang has done many works many of them being residential projects. Most of his works have won awards with PAM and other committees recognized worldwide and in Malaysia. Here are some of his inspirational works. WOOI RESIDENCE, Shah Alam Client: Wooi Lok Kuang

Ar. Wooi’s house is located in Shah Alam, Subang Jaya. It is one of the very few house design to follow the universal concept of being environmentally friendly and energy-efficient as possible making it blend the aspects of nature into its design. The notion behind using strips of timber positioned vertically as bars in place of walls is to allow free flow of air throughout the house thus This diminish dependence on air-conditioners. Timber is a very versatile material, which can be utilized in various ways to bring out their warmth and natural beauty. The idea of a leaf-shaped timber ceiling in the master bedroom is again an effort to bring one’s keenness to nature.

Architect’s comments: ‘one of my goals is to develop these same concepts and translate them for incorporation into designs of more affordable homes in Malaysia.’

TING RESIDENCE Client: Ting Choong Sing

The house was couple design with two grown-up children and intended to take full advantage of the views afforded as it’s on a steep slope. The curves of the building were largely imitative of the existing natural contour line.

Eventually the organic shape became the main frame of the building

comprising of the living room, dining area and kitchen on the ground floor;

the three bedrooms for the family and a guest room are sited on the first

floor.

The living and dining space on the ground floor is enclosed by full-height

glass with sliding doors. Another slimmer organic shape that houses the

curved entry stairway, gallery and gymnasium, doubles as a buffer

ensuring discretion from any prospect development on the adjoining lot.

Jury’s comments: Daring vision of bold, spectacular and evocative organic sculptural form that is sensitively integrated to nature, slope and trees with good weathering materials that are both vernacular and modern.

LEE RESIDENCE, Shah Alam Client: Francis Lee

The Residency is situated in a nicely gated compound in Shah Alam looking out to the panoramic views of golf course and the city. The house was designed for an outgoing couple with two grown sons. The concept was to have a three-in-one residence for eventual extended family house. Both parents’ and each son’s bedroom suite are isolated with their own impartial area but still manage to share visual connection. The master bedroom suite experiences a 180° panoramic view, whereas a 360° shattered view is reserved for the loft where family members and their friends experience routine line dancing. The tension amongst a “softer” curvilinear central garden, besides a “blinker-like” perimeter wall generates a dynamic and fascinating relationship between the inside and outside.

Jury’s comments: A bold statement of free-flowing forms and spaces around

nature; a piece of art expertly executed.
