References 1. References are people that the boss can call and ask personal questions about YOU to see if he/she wants to hire you. How well does he work with others? How would you describe her personality? Did you ever have any problems with her? What do you think are his best skills? There are a few things to remember when it comes to choosing references... Always choose adults that know you well. 2. #3. Make sure the adults you choose as references like you. If they dont like you, chances are they will not say nice things about you. In this case you will never get a job Yes, your family probably likes you, but they can be biased. The boss usually wants to hear from someone that does not HAVE to put up with you. #4. Make sure your references are NOT related to you. 5. The average is 3 You cannot write N/A for references. The employer is asking for a specific number. You MUST provide however many they ask for. So, who can I use as a reference? Work Related References If you have ever done any work for someone, whether they paid you or not, they can make a good reference. Think about people you have baby sat for, people whos lawn you have mowed, neighbors whos mail youve gotten while they were on vacation, etc. School Related References Teachers, coaches, guidance counselors, and other adults you know from school can also make great job references. Just remember to choose people that know you and like you Other adults can also be used as references as long as they know you, like you, and are not related to you. Filling in the Work Experience or Work History section on an application can get a little tricky and frustrating if youre not careful. Lets Start With Some Basics... Most applications will ask for your last 3 work experiences. 1. DO NOT Leave this question blank. First of all you need to understand the basic concept of work experience. 2. The boss will usually ask this question on an application because he or she wants to know if you have ever had any responsibility. That means you should list any job you have ever done, no matter how small. 3. Many kids dont think they have any work experience because they have never worked in a store, but dont sell yourself short. The following are all jobs you could use to fill in the Work Experience section of an Application. Baby Sitting Lawn Mowing Student Council Transition Coach Pet Sitting Volunteer Work Working at a parents Business Club Officer (Band Secretary, etc) Gym Crew Youth Reffing Chores at Home (Domestic) *The important thing to remember is that if you have had responsibility, you can use it on the application.
