    Shubh Vivah

Marriage is meant to be a very sacred union

between two people who have no intenon

of ever becoming emoonally or physically

ed to another person for the rest of

eternity. Indian weddings are very filled with

ritual and celebraon that connue for

    several days. Generally anywhere between

100 to 10,000 people aend. Oen, many

of the aendees are unknown to the bride

and groom themselves. Though most Indian

marriages are arranged, some couples in

    urban areas consummate "love marriages",

in which the partners decide to marry each

    other without family involvement or

assistance. The tradional Indian wedding is

about two families being brought together

socially, with as much emphasis placed on

the families coming closer as the married

    Wedding Tradions

    Wedding tradions vary across religion,

    caste, ethnicity, language, region, etc.

    Tradional Indian weddings are generally

    structured into prewedding ceremonies,

    wedding day ceremonies (consisng of

the Baraat, the Varmala and the Satphere

(Seven Pheres), and the Vidaai. When the

marriage has been agreed upon, the

father of the bridegroom visits the

father of the bride. The day before the

expected arrival of the marriage procession,

lavish preparaons are done by the family to

receive the groom (shaadi ki tayaari) in

    beauful and decorated venues, typically

farmhouses or hotel halls, where a sacrificial

fireplace called marhwa is built. Brides

decorate themselves with gold and diamond

jewellery, apply [mehndi] to colour hands

and feet, and undergo various bridal rituals,

including wearing bridal lehenga or saree.

Bridegrooms typically wear a sherwani dress

or a designer suit. To complete the marriage,

the bride and groom walk in a circle (phera)

    around the sacrificial fire.

    V i d a a i i s w h e n t h e b r i d e i s

formal ly sent to the groom's

    household. Many songs have

    immortalized this moment when

the bride leaves her 'babul ka ghar'

or father's house. According to Hindu

    religious texts, Brahma created man

from the right shoulder and woman

from his le shoulder. A woman is

referred to as Vamangi or one who

is on the le side. Throughout the

    marriage ceremony the bride sits

on the right side of the groom.

That is the place for strangers andacquaintances. Only aer the

    Saptpadi, when the bride and

    groom have exchanged marital

vows, is the wife seated on the

le side of the man. An example

of the complexity of an Indian

wedding can be seen from the

various phases of a wedding in

    North India. The following events

take place in a typical Eastern

    Uar Pradesh Hindu marriage.

The bride and groom are told

    a b o u t t h e i r d u e s a n d

    responsibilies in married life by

the priest. These vows direct the

couple to a posive path of

    acon. They help in promong

    marital happiness for a lifeme.

    Manage beer, feel stronger

Are you, or someone you care for, struggling

with a health problem such as diabetes,

asthma, lung disease, high blood pressure,

high cholesterol, weight issues, kidneydisease, heart disease, depression, anxiety,

arthris or other health condions? It is not

always easy to manage these on our own.

We all manage our lives in various ways.

However, regardless of our coping styles,

we will all feel challenged when we find

    ourselves dealing with a longterm

    condion such as diabetes, arthris,

chronic pain, anxiety or depression. It can

be equally distressing when someone we

love needs our support to deal with alongterm condion.

Having a longterm condion is different

from the experience that we have when we

have an acute illness, such as a cold, a

broken bone or an infecon. These illnesses

are usually diagnosed quickly and are

treatable with rest, medicaon or surgery.

When we are treated for an acute

However, a longterm condion is an

illness or disorder that lasts formonths or years. Many longterm

condions are with us for the rest of

our lives. The process of being

    diagnosed, receiving treatment,

    taking medicaons, changing habits

and the experience of the symptoms

of a longterm condion can feel

    overwhelming. We find that when

    dealing with a longterm condion,

even the simplest tasks can feel

difficult. The art of balancing all ofthe various demands that are related

    Self Management

The first taskof selfmanagement is to take

care of our medical condion. This refers to

the effort that is required to make medical

appointments, get to the specialist, takemedicaon and follow the advice of our

    healthcare professionals. This can require

extra scheduling, me off from work,

finding support for transport and gathering

research and advice about our condion.

The second task is to keep living and do

things that we enjoy. We somemes feel

that having a longterm condion means

that we can't connue to do the things we

enjoy, or that we need to do. We sll need

to get to work, get children to school, get tothe grocery store and do all of those things

that are part of our lives. We may need to

work on feeling more comfortable to ask

others for help and we may need to modify

the way that we do things. For example, if

we love to garden but have too much pain,

we might try using a stool or a cushion to

sll do some work in the garden.

The third task is to deal with all of

the emoons related to the challenge

of having a long termcondion, or

loving someone who has a longtermcondion. It is natural to experience

such emoons such as anger, fear,

    frustraon and grief when challenged

by health and mood issues. It is also

    i m p o r t a n t t o r e a l i z e t h a t

    relaonships are oen changed or

    strained by longterm condions.

    Learning how to communicate with

family and talk about our feelings is

an important step in managing our

    health challenges.

    When we have a longterm

condion, we not only need to

learn how to take care of

ourselves beer, but we alsoneed to find tools and strategies

to manage all of the various

aspects of our lives that are

affected by it. We are all different,

so it is up to us to experiment

    and become experts on what

works for us. As soon as we begin

to take acon in our own

    management plan, we begin to

    feel stronger. Selfmanagement

begins when we decide to get thesupport we need to manage

    beer and feel stronger.
