Welcome to Naked Craft!

We invite you to become part of an exciting cross-Atlantic collaboration like no other. Naked Craft will not only create a space for discussion and research around Craft, but also by drawing upon the building of powerful partnerships, develop implementable outcomes that will contribute to the future successful marketing of Craft in both countries. Those partnerships begin with you.

As a Naked Craft Sponsor your contribution will aid in every aspect of the project’s production, from speaker fees, exhibition costs, promotional and administrative costs down to the very basics. Through our promotional outreach your organization’s name will reach a wide and eager audience, positioning your organization as a leader in the support and advancement of Craft both in Canada and in Scotland.

Join us as we celebrate the naked truth around craft.

Sincerely,

Emma Quin Denis LongchampsExecutive Director, Ontario Crafts Council (OCC) Director of Programs, Burlington Art Centre (BAC)

Craft traditions reach across the Atlantic Ocean to connect Canada and Scotland. Expressions of the interwoven rich and

complex history of these Northern countries are personifi ed through the crafts, with their shared forms and materials.

From the stereotypical expectations of fi ddles and whiskey to surprising new interpretations of the relationship between

Aboriginal and Settler cultures, the Naked Craft Network (NCN) explores all contemporary manifestations of craft.

It is the perfect vehicle for driving regional economies, inspiring creative talent, and tapping into shared Scottish and Canadian

experiences. Craft can embody the stories we share, can challenge history, and shape the future.

From the carefully hand-crafted to craftivist statements on identity to the digital revolution, join us in experiencing how today’s innovative craftspeople

are rethinking Canadian and Scottish craft cultures and economies by stripping things back to the basics. It is time to celebrate the naked truth

around craft.

Naked Craft will be presented through multiple platforms including the MAKE/WORKshops and the Naked Craft Exhibitions, touring Canada and

Scotland. It is here that we are looking for your support. Read on for more details...

PROJECT SUMMARY

MAKE/WORKshopsWhat makes this project such an exciting one is the opportunity to draw on two distinct cultural identities, and the opportunity to examine the commonalities in these cultures around their historical connections and attachments to or rejection of heritage. The Naked Craft Network intends to generate new perspectives on shared and individual responses to Craft’s relationship with the past and its challenges for the future by bringing craftspeople together in two MAKE/WORKshops. These are collaborative projects, with a comparative focus on Scottish and Canadian contemporary craft that has not previously been undertaken by practitioners and theorists from within the discipline.

The fi rst MAKE/WORKshop took place in October 2013 in Lumsden, Scotland at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop. Ten makers (fi ve from Scotland and fi ve from Canada) from a range of materials and approaches spent ten days discussing and making in a creative international incubator, concluding in a one day refl ective Symposium.

The Canadian MAKE/WORKshop will be taking place in October 2014 at the Burlington Art Centre (BAC), where a new group of Scottish and Canadian makers will have the opportunity for creative exchange. The creation of a Scottish/Canadian network will further provide innovative and exciting possibilities for moving the conversation outside academic discourse and encouraging public engagement with thorny issues of tradition and innovation, vernacular and global, hand-made and high tech. All of which are central to the development of craft as a practice and to the wider understanding and embracing of a craft as a discipline within a contemporary, global context. Similarily, this workshop will culminate in an open symposium presenting fi ndings to public academics, and leaders and stakeholders in the community.

NAKED CRAFT ExhibitionBoth Scotland and Canada share a sense of northern resilience, each being situated above a southern political powerhouse. People in both countries have a tendency to identify themselves by what they are not: not English, not American. There is also a shared collective connection to each country’s raw resources which, in turn, informs the identity of Scottish and Canadian contemporary craft.

It is what most people think of when you mention these two countries; the rugged openness of the landscape, and the natural environment. Furthermore, traditions and heritage – from complicated colonial legacies to celebrated founding principles - are placeholders that contribute to the defi ning of identity and cultures manifest in much craft production. We believe that these commonalities have much to tell us in terms of making processes and associated cultural identities. The makers in the Naked Craft Exhibition off er a combination of traditional and innovative craft practices.

This exhibition will strip ideas of craft back down to themes that bridge the past and the present, Old Scotland and New Scotland, traditional and changing ideas. These areas of examination are intended to form a creative, open-minded focus on exploring disciplinary, theoretical, conceptual and methodological approaches to the discipline. This project provides a novel and timely approach to issues of production and consumption of craft from a range of historical and contemporary perspectives.
