NAK IS BACK WHERE HE BELONGS

Thanks to a concerted effort by the school community, Nak Assavatheptavee started his VCE studies last Wednesday. In the last couple of weeks Nak has received further support with a $2000 donation from a Sydney business man as well as Spectrum book sellers and GPI clothing donating the cost of books and uniform. The focus is now on gaining the permanent residency for Nak his brother and sister have already received. The following quote from Alice Walker sums up our efforts. “The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any” LETTER FROM NAK

It is really difficult to express in words all that I feel in returning to Australia.

Being able to come home means so much to me and it was only possible because of the incredibly generous help and support of so many people, such as you.

Until this happened to me, I had no idea that people could be so generous and could care so deeply for someone they didn’t really know. All that has happened to me has changed my life so much and has made me a different person.

Thank you for all your help and support and organization that I could not have done myself and know that it is appreciated from the bottom of my heart. In Thailand they have an expression, “kob kun kup” meaning thank you, and that is what I’d like to say to you. Yours sincerely, Nak Assavatheptavee

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT -- AUTHENTIC LEARNING

Authentic learning says that we should learn what happens in the real world and become cognitive apprentices to the experts. When we learn about maths, we learn to think like mathematicians. When we learn about the weather, we learn to use tools that a meteorologist would use. When we learn to draw, we are taught techniques that real artists use”. wwwpersonal.umich.edu/~tmarra/authenticity/authen.html At Thornbury High School Authentic Learning has underpinned much of the curriculum development which has occurred as the results of the implementation of the new Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) approach across all learning areas, especially at year 7 -10.

Some outstanding example of authentic learning occurred at THS in 2005:

THE CAMPAIGN TO RETURN NAK TO THE SCHOOL. The students involved in this 18 month campaign certainly were in a steep learning curve with regard to immigration policies, politics and the media. The need to get our message across as well as gain the support of the general public was achieved through a combination of online petitions, protest rally, writing to politicians and public speaking. Many lessons have been learnt which also apply to success at school as well in our personal life. Those lessons centre around the need to be organised, to work with others, to communicate effectively but, most importantly, to persist and to be determined against a range of stumbling blocks which were put in our way. THE PRODUCTION OF CLASS TV The year 9 & 10 media elective with the help of Paul Van Eeden put together a half hour show seen on Channel 31 every Saturday morning at 10am. The format of a quiz show involving up to 10 primary schools was very successful. Thornbury High students were compering, script writing, filming, editing and producing as well as interviewing people on the street.

This term the show returns in a different format show-

casing not only our students’ work but also work from a range of primary and secondary schools. RACV ROAD SAFETY ADVERTISEMENT The students in our very successful VCAL (applied learning) program at year 11 were the state winners with their advertisement “don’t follow your mates like sheep”. This ad has been shown on a daily basis on Channel 7 during the holidays. The students worked with Mr Gillies and Mr Parker to develop a story board that summarized the concept for this advertisement. They had to present this to channel 7 executives. PLAN AUSTRALIA Last year a unique cross cultural communication project “Global Connections”, initiated by Plan Australia, linked our 9D students and their teacher, Ms Carydis, with 15 teenagers incarcerated at Jakarta’s Tangerang prison.

Each of the above examples of Authentic Learning will be the types of activities that students at year 9 will experience on a regular basis starting this year. The school will use the $1 million of the Leading Schools program to develop and implement this innovative curriculum.

DROPPING AND PICKING UP OF STUDENTS

THS NEWS 10th February 2006 2

There is major congestion at the front gate both before and after school with parents dropping and picking up their children. PLEASE do not stop in the middle of the road, do not “U” turn just inside the gate and do not block other people. The Police will be booking people who continue to practise unsafe and illegal driving manoeuvres.

SOME HELPFUL HINTS: 1. You can drive all the way through and exit on

Matisi Street 2. You can enter and exit form Matisi Street where

there is no traffic. 3. You can follow the arrows which will keep the

flow of traffic moving.

He has also played in the All Australian Men’s Netball under-19 team, was school captain and publicity manager for 2005 and has coached younger students for the past three years.

And he’s done all of this while studying and completing his year 12 VCE and been a vital member of the senior stage concert bands.’ LETTERS / EMAILS TO THE PRINCIPAL

THS NEWS 10th February 2006 3

Dear Mr Egeberg, I am writing to congratulate you and your students on your successful fund-raising which allowed student Nak Assavatheptavee to be able to return to his studies and life in Australia. It disheartens me the inconsistencies the Government show when making these life changing decisions with real people’s lives. I commend yourself and your students at Thornbury High School for their compassion, dedication and selflessness in helping one of their fellow school mates. I’m sure these qualities will stay with them as they move into their adult lives and it gives me great hope for the future of our kids. Yours sincerely, Mrs Rose Stark Melton, Suffolk, UK

Congratulations to all those involved in effecting Nak’s return. That’s what I call student engagement. Cate Watson Student Leadership Manager Bayswater SC

Dear All, Just a quick word of congratulations on your efforts in bringing back Nak Assavatheptavee to Australia. That is Excellence and Achievement. A very valuable lesson. Again well done. Cheers, Simon [Loudoun]

In Reference To An Article Published 30 Jan 2006 ‘Exiled Student Returns To Warm Welcome Home’: What excellent reading, and a great demonstration of ‘fair dinkum’ friendship. Which surely brands as ‘prize galahs’ those who say that Australians are generally racist. I shall send this to various friends and acquaintances ‘around the trap’s and overseas. May the young fellow enjoy his many years ahead in our great nation. Yours sincerely, Bill Sherriff [Capt] RL, Niddrie

JUNIOR SUB SCHOOL NEWS Year 7 students appear to have begun the year well. It is pleasing to see so many smiling faces and industrious classrooms. MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS All students in the Middle School have settled in well. All students have received their school planners and lockers and have begun their studies in earnest. This year the Middle School Co-ordinators are Carmel Ryan (9/10 Manager), Mary Anagnastopoulos (Year 10 Co-ordinator) and Mark Gillies (Year 9 Co-ordinator). There is somebody available in the 9/10 office from about 8.15am each morning if you need to contact a Middle School Co-ordinator.

Most students have their text books. However, a number of year 10 students still need to purchase second hand Maths and Science text books. We are hoping to have more available next week for sale. A reminder to all parents that all years 9 and 10 students must wear the school’s sport uniform during PE and Sport classes.

Information about the Year 9 camp will be available later this term. This year the camp will be going to Sydney and Canberra.

A number of new students have enrolled in the Middle School this year and we welcome them to Thornbury High School.

There are still some outstanding immunisation forms which need to be returned by some Year 10 students. All forms must be returned as soon as possible. All students have been issued with their personal and emergency details and these forms must also be returned to the form teachers. It is important that we have all ‘up to date’ details in case of an emergency. Please check that your son or daughter has returned these forms to the school.

We look forward to working with you all this year. The Middle School Team VCE NEWS The VCE students have had an excellent start to the year. We intend to build on the success of 2005. MANAGED INDIVIDUAL PATHWAYS REPORT - STUDENTS ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS The school was extremely pleased with the offers received by the year 12 class of 2005. Forty five students applied for a tertiary course using the VTAC system. Forty students were offered a place in an institution and of those 80% accepted their first or second preference, an outstanding result. Twenty students are undertaking graduate degrees at universities including Monash, Melbourne, Latrobe and RMIT while eighteen have enrolled in diploma courses at TAFE institutions. Two students have enrolled in private colleges. The five students who did not receive a first round offer have all been counselled. Two have enrolled directly into TAFE courses, two are entering the work force for this year and the other is repeating year 12. A number of VCAL students did not apply for tertiary study however the majority of these students are following their chosen pathway. Five are completing TAFE course they began at school. Four students have entered the work force, one as an apprentice and one student is in the process of looking for an apprenticeship.

The school’s policy is to contact ex students on a regular basis, particularly if they are uncertain about their career choice or the course they are studying. We want both students and parents to be aware of our commitment to students even after they have moved on. This is still their community as long as they need our support.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any queries. David Smith MIPS 94586103 THORNBURY PARENTS & FRIENDS ASSOCIATION Welcome back to another year at Thornbury High. AMERICA TRIP On Wednesday January 11th 2006, the Thornbury High Community Band comprising of teachers, students, past students and one parent, boarded the plane for AMERICA! We landed in Los Angeles after a thirteen and a half hour flight, one hour before we left – confusing huh?

We travelled from L.A. to beautiful Santa Barbara where we were billeted with members of the Prime Time over 50’s Community Band. We work-shopped with a local middle school band and performed the same night, then spent a day sightseeing with our host.

With many a fond farewell we set off for San Francisco on the 14th, going by way of Hearst Castle, a truly amazing place to visit. William Randolph Hearst gathered many treasures from Europe and Asia and put them together in a truly spectacular way e.g. 16th Century pews line the walls of the Great Hall!

After five more hours driving up route 101 we got to USA Hostel San Francisco, only three blocks from the heart of downtown S.F.

Walking the Golden Gate Bridge, visiting Alcatraz, catching the cable cars and walking the world’s windiest street were some of the great things we did while there.

On Wednesday the 18th we set off on a ten hour bus ride to the glitzy Las Vegas! In the time we had we explored the many brightly lit attractions of Vegas and even had a bus load of our group travel to see the Grand Canyon. Every night we had dinner at a different casino and spent our evenings seeing circus shows, riding roller coasters and shopping! One of our days was spent taking a tour of the gigantic Hoover Dam, which was a bit too educational for most of us.

TERM DATES 2006 Term 1 Monday 30th January –Friday 10th March Term 2 Monday 27th March – Friday 16th June Term 3 Monday 3rd July – Friday 15th September Term 4 Monday 2nd October – Thursday 21st December

We left Las Vegas, with all of us feeling like we could have stayed there forever and headed back to L.A. on Saturday the 21st. Our last week was spent staying at the Cadillac Hotel on Venice Beach. The next day we hit Disneyland for three days of music work shops, performances and lots of rides, fun and shopping.

Then we did a bus tour of all the famous stars homes, Hollywood Boulevard, Sunset Boulevard, Rodeo Drive, downtown Beverly Hills and Olivera Street- L.A.’s little Mexico. Thursday was a shopping day when we got the chance to go back to the places from the tour that interested us the most. On Friday we went to Universal Studios for more fun rides, more

shopping and sorer feet. Exhaustion was a big feature on this trip.

On Saturday the 28th we spent the morning cramming in some last hours of sight seeing and shopping on Venice Beach before heading to the airport at 4 pm. We emerged at Tullamarine Airport on Monday 30th January to the welcoming arms of our families. Thanks to everyone for the effort and time they put in to make this trip the best it could be. Helen Croatto 10A VISITORS FROM OVERSEAS Istituto Romanazzi, Bari, Italy and Istituto Giannone, S. Marco in Lamis, Italy-Our Sister School. ISTITUTO ROMANAZZI Tuesday 21st February Six students and two staff from the Romanazzi senior school will be visiting and spending the day at T.H.S. on Tuesday 21st February. This is a return visit as part of the Morgana 2 project (funded by the Puglia Region), when three of our students, Catherine, Tony and Sam Alessandrino accompanied by Ms. D’Amore went to Bari, Italy and were guests of the Romanazzi school for one week at the end of November 2005. Our students were hosted by the families of students from the school. The group attended school in the mornings where our students also presented their oral history research project as a powerpoint presentation in the school’s computer lab which traced their family’s migration history, to the students of the Romanazzi and to a group of Canadian students who were also visiting. The rest of the week was spent visiting the main attractions of the Puglia region, making a snowman in the National park, being interviewed in a TV studio and getting to know the Pugliese lifestyle through their Italian families and friends. The Romanazzi students are-Alessandro, Vincenzo, Valerio, Roberto, Anna and Gianluca. They are accompanied by Prof. E. Dalfino and Prof. G. Berardi. They all speak English and are looking forward to getting in some good practice with our students and staff. OUR SISTER SCHOOL- ISTITUTO GIANNONE February 27th – March 3rd. This is our Sister School’s second visit to Thornbury High with a new group made up of 24 senior students and 3 staff members. On their first day, they will be officially welcomed, tour the school, have a BBQ lunch and then play the traditional Giannone-Thornbury soccer match in the afternoon against T. High’s finest socceroos! Note that

the last time they visited in 2003, the game ended in a draw. Mr. Kokkinakis is organizing the T. High side! The group will spend part of their days in the school attending classes and helping in the Italian Lote program so that our students and Italian Lote staff can brush up on their Italian language and culture! HOMESTAY An important part of a school exchange program such as this, is that the visitors experience our Aussie lifestyle and practice their English. In return, they will contribute their experience of the Italian lifestyle and a European perspective of life. It’s a great opportunity for a cultural exchange for our students and their families! Families who can help with homestay for the visiting students from Monday to Thursday, please contact Ms. D’Amore on ph. 9480 4066. We are setting up a buddy system, so that students whose family offers homestay will be able to accompany their Italian buddy during the week. The Giannone students are: Rachele, Leonardo, Carla, Gianluca, Annalisa, Francesco, MariaRita, Giovanna, Luigi, Nicoletta, Luigi, Giovanni, Federica, Matteo, Giuseppe, Antonio, Nazario, Luigi, Paolo, Antonio, Michele, Arcangela, Valeria, Antonio. The teachers are: Prof. Ianzano, Prof. Nardella, Prof. Giordano. For more information on the Istituto Giannone and to view the photos of the group, visit www.iisgiannone.it REPORT FROM STUDENT WELLBEING COORDINATOR There have been some changes made to the program this year. The new SWC office is now located opposite the Middle School Office in what used to be the Nurse’s office. Everyone is welcome. The Nurse, Ms. Chigros is still there and available to be consulted on Thursday and Friday of each week. The new SWC Co-Ordinator, Ms. D’Amore, can be contacted on ph.9480 4066.

I would like to acknowledge and thank Ms. Carydis for the excellent and thorough job she has done as SWC in the last two years. I hope to carry on and build on her work in the coming months.
