Adhesive:

Manufacturer:Name:Description:

OSI Sealants, Inc.RT-600 AdhesiveRoofing Tile Caulk

Mechanical Fastener:

Description:Manufacturer:

#10 x 2" Course Threaded ScrewAtlas Fasteners, Inc.

System Construction and Application Details:

Deck

The plywood deck was constructed with standard 2 X 6 framing members, spaced 24 inches apart and 15/32 inch thick 4 ply APA 32/16 span ratedsheathing. The sheathing was attached with 8d common nails placed 6 incheson center at the edges and 12 inches on center at intermediate supports.

Tile/Ridge Anchor Installation Details

Six tiles were selected and weighed. Six foot sections of Dan's Custom SheetMetal 26 gauge Standard Ridge Anchor, 6 inches high, were mounted to the testdeck with 1-1/2 x 3/8 inch head screws placed sixteen inches on center, twoinches from the edge of the fastening flange. OSI, RT-600 Roof Tile Adhesivewas placed in two locations. The first, a 10 gram paddy was placed on the metalridge as to allow the mechanical fastener to penetrate during tile installation. Asecond 10 gram, Y4x 8 inch strip of the adhesive was placed at the head of thetile and extending across the entire lap area of the tile. In addition to theadhesive, the tile was mounted to the ridge metal with a #10 x 2" coursethreaded screw which was placed in the factory drilled hole at the head of tile. The mechanical tile fastener was driven through the RT-600 and penetrated theridge anchor.

Conditioning

The deck was tested four days after application.

Testing:

nThe deck was moved into position under the loading frame of the test apparatus at 0:12inch slope. The crosshead speed of the testing machine was set to 1.0 inch per minute. Each test tile was loaded continuously. During the test the applied load was monitoredin order to determine the maximum load obtainable to cause ultimate failure of the tile ortile attachment. Ultimate failure was recorded as the maximum load resisted by thesystem. Ultimate loads were achieved before the nose of the tile was deflected 2inches. The test temperature was 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Calculations and Results

Section 207.1: The allowable overturning moment shall be the lower overturningmoment calculated in Section 207.2 and 207.3.

Section 207.2: The fastening system's contribution to the allowable overturningmoment fat the tile shall be the result of the average failure overturning momentdetermined by the criteria for that specific installation system minus the resistingmoment provided by the dead weight of the tile divided by 2. The allowableoverturning moment for the tile is the sum of the fastening system's contributionplus the resisting moment provided by the dead weight of the tile.

Section 207.3: The fastening system's contribution to the allowable overturningmoment for the tile shall be the result of the lowest failure overturning momentdetermined by the criteria for that specific installation system minus the resistingmoment provided by the dead weight of the tile. The allowable overturningmoment for the tile is the sum of the fastening system's contribution plus theresisting moment provided by the dead weight of the tile.

Section 406: FAILURE CRITERIA: Failure of the tile's fixing shall be consideredas the load required to cause deflection without an increase in the load orseparation of the system. An adhesive system shall use the failure criteria of thissection and Section 406.

In order to determine the allowable overturning moment (Ma), the average failureoverturning moment (Mf) and the resisting moment (Mg)must be summed about a singlepoint, the axis of rotation of the tile. This axis was assumed and observed to be aboutthe head of the tile where it was in contact with the deck.

The results were determined in accordance with the mathematical instructions found inSBCCI SSTD 11-99 Section 207. The data collected during the test along with thecalculations have been compiled into a summary sheet, in the Appendix. A photographof the test assembly can be found in the Appendix.

It should be noted that SBCCI SSTD 11-97 does not specifically address con-joined tile,ie. tiles attached to the ridge as well as to the underlying tile course. Based on theengineering consideration presented by this situation, the resultant allowableoverturning moment (average and low) is divided by two, once as required by thestandard and then a second time to compensate for the two tiles which are con-joined.The interpretation for con-joined tile was validated by Gary Nichols of SBCCI. Thismethod of analysis for conjoined tile systems is also used by Metro-Dade, Florida.
