NAI Cummins In The NewsNAI Cummins Negotiates Retail Lease with Goodwill IndustriesIn the third quarter of 2009 Goodwill Industries of Akron will open a new 14,500 square foot location, which includes a 7,500 square foot retail store at 1725 State Road in the Smith Centre Shopping Plaza in Cuyahoga Falls.

Scott Repie of NAI Cummins Real Estate represented Semler Hotel Company, owner of the Smith Centre Shopping Plaza.

“Goodwill Stores have a reputation for being ‘The Place’ to find deals, and we’re excited to reopen in Cuyahoga Falls,” said Nan McClenaghan, President & CEO of Goodwill Industries. “In these times of economic stress, it makes sense for people to shop at Goodwill. Plus, every purchase from or donation to Goodwill help individuals in our local communities toward achieving their employment goals.”

The new store will have a conference room available to community groups and serve as a training ground for Goodwill Vocational Program participants who assist with daily operations.

Goodwill anticipates hiring 10-13 full and part-time staff for the new store. This is the eleventh retail location operated by Goodwill Industries and the fifth in Summit County. Net proceeds from the sale of items donated to the stores are used in assisting the agency in fulfilling its mission of helping individuals prepare for, find, and retain employment.

Market SynopsisGreater Akron has a stable commercial/retail sector in comparison to many overbuilt markets. The retail market followed national trends with a moderate slowdown in retail activity across the board. New projects completed in 2008 through early 2009 saw strong leasing activity.

Several significant projects announced in late 2008 will sustain the local economic climate throughout 2009. Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company decided to remain in Akron and work with city, county and state governments and a California developer to create their new world headquarters facility. This project, Akron RiverWalk, will cost in excess of $900 million and be completed in 2010. In 2008, the new Akron Art Museum opened in downtown Akron attracting retail growth and redevelopment in nearby commercial real estate.

Growth in new student enrollment at the University of Akron spurred several student housing/retail projects, a new football stadium for the University in East Akron, and multiple new buildings on campus. Summa Hospital and Akron General Hospital continue to invest in the new construction of medical office/mixed-use facilities.

Outlying suburban communities like the City of Green, Wadsworth and Medina saw new super center construction in late 2007. Growth in these communities is bolstered by high quality school systems and low home prices.
