Introduction Welcome to Davis Technical College (Davis Tech). We are pleased you have chosen to continue your education by enrolling in this course. The Nurse Assistant Program is taught with a Lock-step schedule. Lock-step schedules require you to meet with your instructor at specific times to complete a variety of competency-based assignments, labs, and assessments. Specific requirements and/or timelines for successful course completion will be outlined in this syllabus.

Course Description Nurse Assistant examines the holistic approach to safely caring for patients in a variety of settings While in this course, you will analyze how healthcare systems operate and how to function efficiently within a facility. You will also practice how to work on a healthcare team to meet the patient needs. After completing this course and passing a state certification examination, you will play an essential role on a healthcare team by observing, reporting, and performing skills studied within this course.

Course Objectives • Demonstrate how to safely care for patients and residents in a variety of healthcare settings • Perform the skills needed to pass the State of Utah Certified Nurse Assistant (C.N.A.)

examination administered by UNAR

Page 2: NAHA 1100 Nurse Assistant Program...The Nurse Assistant Program is taught with a Lock-step schedule. Lock-step schedules require you to meet with your instructor at specific times

• Apply the skills and knowledge necessary to be an essential part of the healthcare team and meet the needs of patients and residents

Course Length 90 hours

Course length is based on the average number of hours necessary for a student to complete the course. Your hours may vary slightly from the average. All coursework must be completed and submitted to your instructor by the course end date you were given when you enrolled in this course. To complete this course in the allotted time before your end date, you will need to follow the Course Timeline in this syllabus. If you need additional time to complete the course, you will need to re-enroll in the course and pay all tuition and fees for the course again.

Attendance To see the college’s official attendance policy, please refer to the New Student Orientation in Canvas (davistech.edu/orientation). The Nurse Assistant program requires 85 percent minimum classroom attendance. This means you must be in class at least 76 hours for the duration of your scheduled course to meet UNAR requirements for certification as a Nurse Assistant in the State of Utah. Attendance for these hours is mandatory, and course scheduling does not allow “make-up” days to compensate for missed classroom time. You must come in on the days and times that you are scheduled, and you should not plan to attend class on days or times you are not scheduled. You need to log in to and out of Northstar each time you attend class so that your attendance is documented. Failure to meet the minimum attendance requirements will result in the inability to complete the NAHA 1100 course, and re-enrollment fees may apply.

Respondus LockDown Browser Module Assessments are password-protected and MUST be taken from within Respondus LockDown Browser. The icon link for Respondus LockDown Browser is loaded on the desktop of all computer stations located in the Nurse Assistant classroom. Once you have opened the browser, you will need to select “Davis Technical College - Canvas” from the drop-down menu and then log in to Canvas. If you have any questions about using the browser, please talk to an instructor.

Course Navigation Program Orientation: The NAHA 0000 Nurse Assistant Program Orientation provides important information you need to succeed in the program. You should review the orientation and submit the completed forms before beginning your coursework. Instructions on how to complete your orientation and how to turn in your forms are found in an assignment in Canvas. When you have finished, type your name in the text box in Canvas to show you have read and completed your orientation, and mark the assignment as complete in Canvas.

Immunization Documentation: You are required to submit documentation that proves you meet the Davis Tech Safety, Medical, and Immunization Policy requirements. You must submit this documentation to your instructor before you can attend clinicals. You will find an assignment in Canvas that explains the documentation you will need. Once you have read the requirements, submit the necessary documentation to your instructor to complete the assignment.

Using your Textbook: As you read each chapter, you will notice detailed skill instructions that include care guidelines and tips for observing and reporting. Please study the skills carefully. You

Page 4: NAHA 1100 Nurse Assistant Program...The Nurse Assistant Program is taught with a Lock-step schedule. Lock-step schedules require you to meet with your instructor at specific times

Davis Technical College Page 4

might be tempted to skip these sections of the chapter, but don’t. The information contained in these care guidelines and tips for observing and reporting will be included your module assessment. Review questions at the end of each chapter serve as a good study tool when preparing for the state certification knowledge exam. Answer keys for chapter review questions are located in Canvas.

Workbook: Each chapter in the textbook has a corresponding set of workbook exercises. You should answer the questions directly in your workbook. Once you have completed each set of exercises, you should check your answers with the answer key in Canvas. These assignments are not graded and will not be turned in; however, these exercises provide additional learning opportunities, and the completed workbook can be used as a study guide for the module assessments and the UNAR state certification test.

At the back of the workbook is a section that outlines the steps necessary to complete each of the required skills for this course. You should bring your workbook to the lab as you work on skills, so an instructor can sign off each skill you pass.

Utah Nursing Assistant State Certification Exam Guide: The entirety of this exam guide can be found at www.utahcna.com, under UNAR Testing Materials. The first two pages of this publication comes directly from UNAR. It contains information regarding certification requirements, state testing protocol, instructions for state certification testing, and a practice knowledge exam with answer key. You may be asked questions from these pages of the exam guide on unit quizzes and module assessments. Following this section of the UNAR State Exam Guide, you will find the NAHA 1100 Student Skills Guide. This is to be used to practice following demonstration and in preparation for taking the State Skills Exam.

NAHA 1100 Study Guide: The NAHA 1100 Study Guide can be found in your curriculum packet. It contains state-specific certification and registry information you will need to know for your UNAR state certification exam. It also contains UNAR objectives, skills, vocabulary and abbreviations for each unit. You should use the study guide to ensure you are familiar with UNAR learning objectives as you prepare for the module assessments and the state certification exam.

• Vocabulary and Abbreviations: You will need to familiarize yourself with the vocabulary terms and abbreviations in the study guide for each unit because they will help you better understand the questions on the module assessments in this course and the state certification exam. Read through the vocabulary terms and abbreviations for each unit prior to completing the reading for the unit. When you have completed the reading for the unit, define any vocabulary terms that you are still unfamiliar with. See an instructor for help with any words or terms you have questions about.

Podcast and Podcast Assignments: For the Hybrid courses, unit podcast and podcast assignments will be completed. Instructors may use podcasts for students who miss lab sessions in all courses to assist with supporting learning objectives when making up labs.

Videos: You will be directed to watch videos throughout each module. These videos introduce relevant healthcare concepts and demonstrate skills that you will be required to pass off during the

Page 5: NAHA 1100 Nurse Assistant Program...The Nurse Assistant Program is taught with a Lock-step schedule. Lock-step schedules require you to meet with your instructor at specific times

Davis Technical College Page 5

course. You should view the videos outlined for each unit before attempting to pass off skills in the lab with an instructor. Follow the instructions in Canvas to view the videos. The password for the Hartman’s video link is datckaysville. Lippincott’s videos can be viewed on classroom computers.

Skills: UNAR has identified specific skills that must be demonstrated with proficiency in order to pass the state certification exam. During this course, you will learn and practice these skills. Each skill must be passed off with an instructor in the lab prior to completing the course. Students who have not passed off all skills will not be scheduled for clinicals.

• Skill Demonstration Sessions: You will be scheduled to attend an instructor-led lab session at the end of each unit for a demonstration of important skills. After your instructor has demonstrated each skill, you will have the opportunity to practice in preparation for your skill pass-off. Please see your instructor for details about your scheduled lab sessions.

• Skill Demonstration Log: Once you have completed a skill demonstration session in the lab with an instructor, you need to complete the skill demonstration log for that unit in Canvas. This log is password protected and can only be completed with permission from your instructor. This log must be completed in order to receive credit for each skill demonstration lab. If you forget to complete this log on the day of your lab session, you may be required to repeat the skill demonstration lab.

• Skill Pass-off Lab Sessions: There are six skill pass-off lab sessions that you will complete one-on-one with an instructor in the lab. On the first day of class, your instructor will give you a Skill Pass-off sheet for you to utilize as you study and prepare for your Skill Pass-off Sessions. You may need to perform some skills more than once to demonstrate competency for each skill. After you have successfully passed off all the skills in each session, your instructor will give you feedback on your performance and indicate areas you may need additional practice before completing your Final Skills Pass-off for the course.

• Skills Pass-off Sheet: This sheet outlines all the skills you are required to learn and demonstrate during this course. UNAR refers to this outline as the Nursing Assistant Skill Proficiency Performance List (NAPP). Your instructor will keep a copy of the original UNAR-issued NAPP sheet as a record of your skills progress in this class. The supplemental material section at the end of this syllabus contains a modified version of the NAPP that corresponds to the units in the course for your reference.

• Vital Signs Log: In Unit 7, you will learn how to take vital signs. Once you have completed the vital signs skill demonstration lab, you will need to complete 30 sets of vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, and respirations) prior to completing your final skills. You should record each set of vital signs on the Vital Signs Log found in the supplemental material at the end of this syllabus. The first, tenth, twentieth, and last set of vital signs you record must be completed with an instructor and require an instructor signature to be complete. Your completed log should be turned in to your instructor at Final Skills.

Page 6: NAHA 1100 Nurse Assistant Program...The Nurse Assistant Program is taught with a Lock-step schedule. Lock-step schedules require you to meet with your instructor at specific times

Davis Technical College Page 6

• Final Skills: The final skills demonstration is a preparation for your state certification skills exam. You will schedule a time to complete the final skills with your instructor. Final skills will take place in the lab, and you will need to wear scrubs. You will be required to demonstrate proper hand washing technique and complete a set of vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, respirations, and temperature).

You will also be given a scenario that will require you to complete five skills. You will incorporate beginning and ending procedures into your skills demonstration. As you perform these skills, you should pay special attention to the key steps for each skill (see the Utah Nursing Assistant State Certification Exam Guide for key steps and skill requirements). Each skill you are required to demonstrate is weighted according to UNAR guidelines. You must achieve a minimum score of 75 percent or better for each skill performed along with 100 percent of key steps to pass your final skills demonstration.

Quizzes: Quizzes will be taken in Canvas and are made up of multiple choice questions. Quizzes are open book/ open note and are meant to help you prepare for the module assessments. You must take each quiz at least once before taking the module assessment, but you may take each quiz as many times as you would like. Your grade for each quiz is the average score of all your attempts. You need to take each attempt seriously and do your best. If you do not know an answer to a quiz question, you should use your textbook, workbook, or supplemental course materials to locate the answer.

Module Assessments: At the end of each module, you will be required to take a module assessment in Respondus LockDown Browser. These assessments are closed book/closed note and must be taken in class. No cell phones, coursework, or study materials are allowed at the testing computers. You will need to get a password from your instructor to begin the assessment. If you do not get 80 percent or higher on your first attempt, you should review the assessment with your instructor. You may need to retake module assessments to achieve the necessary score to pass the class overall. Module assessments can only be taken once in a class period. If you need to retake an assessment, you will have to wait until your next scheduled class period to do so.

Final Exam: At the end of the course, you will be required to take the final exam in Respondus LockDown Browser. This exam is closed book/closed note and must be taken in class. No cell phones, coursework, or study materials are allowed at the testing computers. You will need to complete the course evaluation and get a password from your instructor to begin the final exam. To complete the NAHA 1100 course, you must score at 80 percent overall. If you do not get 80 percent or higher on your first attempt, you should review the final exam with your instructor. You may need to retake the final exam to achieve the necessary score to pass the class overall. The final exam can only be taken once in a class period. If you need to retake the final exam, you will have to wait until your next scheduled class period to do so. For this reason, please do not wait until your final scheduled classroom day to take your first attempt at the final exam.

American Heart Association BLS (CPR) Class: This class will be taught during your scheduled class time, but might be in a different location on campus. Classes are scheduled based on student need. You must complete a CPR class as part of this course and before you go to clinicals. Information regarding CPR is located in the syllabus in Module 7; however, you may be scheduled

Page 7: NAHA 1100 Nurse Assistant Program...The Nurse Assistant Program is taught with a Lock-step schedule. Lock-step schedules require you to meet with your instructor at specific times

Davis Technical College Page 7

to complete your CPR class prior to reaching Module 7 in your coursework. Please meet with your instructor if you have scheduling questions. Once you have finished your CPR class, complete the CPR Class Log in Canvas to receive credit. If you have any questions regarding this requirement, please meet with your instructor.

Module Completion Report: At the end of each module, you will submit a module completion report in Canvas. Completing this report will prompt your instructor to mark the module complete in Northstar. It is your responsibility to complete this report. If you forget to complete the report, your progress for this class will not be up-to-date. This report should not be submitted until you have completed all unit quizzes, skill demonstration labs, and skill pass-off lab sessions for that module and passed the module assessment for that module with an 80 percent or better.

Additional Study Resources: This is a module in Canvas that contains additional resources to help you study for the UNAR state certification test. You do not have to complete or pass off anything in this module, and nothing will be assigned in the syllabus. This module simply contains study tools that you may use if you wish.

• Quizlets: Quizlets are accessed in the Additional Study Resources section in Canvas and are study tools that will help you learn the terminology needed to pass module assessments and the UNAR certification exam. There are several different study modes for each Quizlet: match, learn, test, flashcards, and/or spell. You can chose whichever mode fits your learning style. These quizlets are often updated to match the UNAR guidelines and they may be changed at any time.

• Lippincott’s Additional Skill Videos: These additional skill videos are available to view on the computers located in the classroom. Instructions for how to locate these videos can be found in the Additional Study Resources section in Canvas. These videos provide students with additional review of skills that are taught and practiced in the lab.

• Unit Lessons Unit 2 – Unit 15 Podcasts: Podcast to each unit are available through Canvas, following Module 10, under “Podcasts”.

• Study Blue: Study Guide terms can be accessed at the following website: http://studyblue.com. Enter the following in the box:

o Where do you go to school? Davis Applied Technical College o What class are you taking? Certified Nurse Assistant

This provides you with term flashcards for each unit.

Course Evaluation: In your final module, you will be asked to complete a course evaluation for this course. Please be honest, but professional when providing feedback about this course. This evaluation is anonymous, and the information gathered is used by instructors to improve the course content and delivery, as well as the overall program. The evaluation can be located at http://www.davistech.edu/evaluation or in Canvas. If you have any problems with the course evaluation, send an email to [email protected]
