S tomach ulcers have long been recognised in performance and racing horses however;

it is only more recently that we have recognised that this is also a condition suffered by many leisure horses at lower levels of competition and stress. This condition is called Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS)

There are three major types of stomach ulceration recognised in the horse. Primary squamous ulceration, that occurs in the non-glandular portion of the stomach and is thought to be due to incorrect acid levels. Primary glandular ulceration which is not completely understood, but thought to be due to a failure of the protective mucous layer resulting in ulceration of the glandular area of the stomach. The third type of ulceration occurs in the non-glandular portion of the stomach but is considered to develop secondary to delayed gastric emptying caused by problems in the area where the stomach attaches to the small intestine.

Most of our understanding of the causes and management of EGUS relates to primary squamous ulceration. There are recognised risk factors that may contribute such as high concentrate diets, low forage diets, intermittent eating rather than continuous grazing, water deprivation, intense exercise, prolonged stabling, and stress such as that caused by hospitalisation, weaning or transportation. Recently it has been

By Paula Broadhurst

Recognising and Treating Stomach Ulcers

thought that certain bacteria might also be an influencing factor in the development of the disease.

The clinical signs your horse might display if they are having problems with EGUS include weight loss, poor appetite, acute or recurrent colic, poor coat quality, teeth grinding, frequent stretching to urinate, poor performance, girthing pain and behavioural attitude changes. To definitively diagnose stomach ulceration the horse needs to undergo gastroscopy. This involves the horse first being fasted for 12 to 24 hours to allow the stomach to empty of food, water also has to be removed for a few hours depending on the area to be visualised. The gastroscope (a special long camera) is then passed, through the nose, down the oesophagus and into the stomach; we can then examine the stomach lining for any signs of ulceration or damage.

The treatment of EGUS usually requires a combination of strategies to ensure the best recovery and reduce the likelihood of the condition returning. It is possible that some milder degrees of stomach ulceration will heal without specific treatment however, in most cases where a horse is showing clinical signs, therapy is required. The specific treatment regime will depend on the type,

location and severity of the ulceration and will often involve medications that act to reduce stomach acid or protect the mucosal lining such as Omeprazole, Ranitidine hydrochloride and Sucralfate. In some circumstances antibiotic treatment may also be implemented.

There is also good evidence that changes in the horses’ management and feeding regime may significantly improve recovery and reduce reoccurrence. Strategies aimed at reducing the horses stress levels include stable mirrors, increased turn out, access to continuous forage and companionship. The most important dietary requirement is considered to be the provision of continuous adequate levels of fibre, therefore stabled horses should be given frequent small haynets rather than one big one that is eaten quickly. While concentrate feeds do have some effect on the development of EGUS, dietary fibre levels are far more important. Rapeseed or corn oil can also potentially help with the healing of certain types of stomach ulcers. The use of antacid and probiotic feed supplements are reported to assist some horses however the benefit is minimal in many cases.

Like many conditions the effect of EGUS on the individual horse can be extremely variable and the clinical signs demonstrated often don’t correlate directly with the severity of the ulceration. If you have any concerns regarding your own horse then you should contact your own vet to discuss your situation to determine if further examination is warranted. NM

B uying an ‘off the shelf’ building is great but

sometimes it won’t fit the space you have

allocated. Maybe you want something a bit

special that will stand apart from the rest.

Whether it’s a Wendy House, a Summerhouse or a

stable, it can be ‘tailor made’ to look just the way you want

it to.

A really pretty garden shed can be designed to be

appealing to the kids when they are young and as they

grow up it can be used for sleepovers and homework.

In time it can be used for storing bikes, tools or garden

machinery. A well-built shed will always be useful.

Imagine a gorgeous Summerhouse opening out onto

some decking where you can enjoy the garden even when

the sun isn’t shining. Perfect for casual dining or chilling

out with friends.

Perhaps you have a swimming pool and dream of

having a lounge and bar area to entertain friends after an

evening dip. Link it onto a pump house and you can hide

all the pool equipment. It can be made in a traditional

design or a contemporary look depending upon your taste.

Stain it in your chosen colour to complete the look.

A pretty stable in the garden is a great way to save

on livery costs. Your options are only limited by your

imagination.

J ason Webb of Australian Horse Training holds regular

clinics and courses at Ricebridge Farm, Goudhurst,

Kent. He also produces a very interesting monthly

newsletter with tips and topics; here Jason explains how to

ask your horse to stand within your presence but without

totally relying on you.

Jason sets you a challenge with a little test that is a

great indicator of polite manners! Jason believes horses

need to learn to feel confident and settled standing away

from you in any environment. Often he sees owners

standing right next to their horses whilst they get nibbled,

pushed and barged around!

The test is; Can you stand two metres away from your horse with a loose rope (you will need a long rope or lunge line) without him stepping towards you or him getting fidgety or anxious?

If your horse doesn’t stay relaxed and still, stand him

on the spot before stepping slowly backwards without

taking any tension in the rope. If he takes a step towards

you, make yourself “big” and step quickly towards him to

make him step back onto the original spot. Repeat this

until he learns that it is easier to stand where you want him

to. Most horses will be fine with this at home or in a quiet

environment but may not be quite so settled at a show,

so you can repeat the same exercise in more “exciting”

environments. This will also help in other groundwork and

handling situations such as leading, loading, standing for

the vet or farrier or in a line-up in the show ring.

Do let Jason know if you have had problems and this

works for you.

Bunn family might seem

that success is handed to

you on a plate, but after speaking

“Yes” says Daisy, “I had an

Hickstead and their minds would be

my horsey friends found it very odd

would be wholly impressed by the

grounds and facilities available once

the shows had been packed away

for the year. Parties were de rigour

but Dad believed in the ethic of

work hard and play hard, a vibe that

continues to this day. Derby winner

Tina Fletcher always claims I am a

bad (party) influence on her but the

great thing is I never get told off for

bad behaviour, but just that “I’m so

like my parents!”.”

Daisy and her sister Chloe went

with him, Daisy’s preference was

for the hunting side of equestrianism.

It is thanks to the children of the

competing show jumpers that the

very successful Under 10 challenge

takes place each year at the

Hickstead Derby. Initially this was set

up to amuse the likes of the Bunn

children along with Matt Broome,

Dan Skelton and Rob Whitaker,

while the parents could happily

compete knowing their children had

something worthwhile to do and

keep them out of mischief.

Growing up with an extended

family reaps many benefits according

to Daisy. “With Dad at the helm and

very much being a self achiever, we

started work like any other children.

My sister and I used to be paid 50p

a bag for picking up litter after the

shows. One day we spied about

50 bags that had been dumped

behind a hedge and thought ‘great’

easy money and spent the day

lugging them from one end of the

stablefield to the other, instead of

filling our own bags with litter. So off

we went to claim our £25 from Dad,

not knowing that he had already

spotted us, but as the master of

have a vast array of business acumen

and diversity and the many people

working hard behind the scenes to

make Hickstead a success have been

with us throughout the journey.”

One of the proudest moments

from the Hickstead events for Daisy

and for the Bunn family, took place

at Hickstead back in 2004 when

Buddy Bunn won the British Jumping

Derby. “Originally my father had

given the ride to William Funnell

but unfortunately due to a strained

groin William was unable to ride

on the day, so the ride was given

to John Whitaker. John had ridden

Buddy only once the day before. His

success reduced my father to tears

although he was in his seventies at

the time, it was truly emotional and a

wonderful moment.”

Douglas Bunn was passionate

about education, himself working

hard to become a barrister – we

have all heard the stories of him

turning up in court in riding gear. He

believed that all his children, should

have an academic career to run

alongside any riding ambitions. Daisy

had always liked to travel and it was

after returning to Hickstead from

University, to work in the office full

time, that she enrolled in a part-time

photography degree course. That

entrepreneurialism he admired

our tenacity and generously

paid up. My Dad has

always been my

greatest inspiration,

you only have

to look at what

he achieved to

see why. Being

surrounded

by brothers,

sisters, nieces

and nephews

life has always

been exciting.

After Lorna Bunn our

Mother died, her sister

Aunty Nicky became a great

guiding light for us, we are also

lucky to have Dad’s second wife

Sue, known as Granny Sue who is

just born to ‘look after’. Charlie my

brother often goes out drinking with

his nephew, who is only 364 days

younger than him and my niece

Lucy, who know rides for William

Funnell’s The Billy Stud, is only

seven years younger than me, so

when she turned 18, we suddenly

changed from niece and Auntie to

great pals. We are lucky to have

the knowledge and enthusiasm

from three generations of family to

maintain HIckstead. On the board we

her passion in photography comes

from fine art and portraiture. Just a

couple of weeks back, Daisy worked

on the new CS13* International

Event at Bolesworth, as official event

photographer but with a free hand to

capture the non equestrian images.

As Daisy explains “I am so lucky, as

I have grown up with many of the

competitors and people such as the

course builder, Bob Ellis, so I can

always get a great, often cheeky

pose from them, something a little

quirkier than normal. It is images like

these that will help to promote this

fantastic new event for next year and

something I am hoping to use at

Hickstead events this year.”

Daisy concludes “After a

South of England Show Ardingly, 5 – 7 June 2014

W arm, sunny weather, marred only by a short cloudburst on

Saturday morning, ensured record crowds at this year’s South

of England Show.

HRH Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, attended on the first day,

watched a display of Driving for the Disabled and made presentations

in the Ardingly Ring to members of the RDA and those receiving Long

Service Awards before making a

tour of the showground. On Friday

and Saturday similar duties were

carried out by Lord Egremont of

the Petworth Estate, President of

the South of England Agricultural

Society.

Olympic course builder Bob Ellis

tested show jumpers in the main

arena over three days with technical

courses built to height. The

International Stairway was won by

Tim Davies with Valentijn O, while

Damian Charles took the honours in

the Area Trial riding Andy Rothery’s

Midsummers Night Dream, the only

combination clear in the jump-off.

Nicole Pavitt reigned supreme on

Saturday, winning both the R R

Stevenson Sussex Area Grade C

Championship and the Grand Prix

on Old Lodge’s Tia Semilly and

Ultimate Z respectively.

In the twelfth year of the

Inter-hunt Relay competition, with

slight modifications to the course,

the team from the Chiddingfold,

Leconfield and Cowdray Hunt came

out on top, a win made sweeter by

the fact that this was the first time

they had got through to the final!

The true spirit of the show

was summed up when crowds

of children and parents mingled

in the ring with the hounds and

huntsmen during the Cavalcade of

Hounds. NM

Y ou’ve had your horse’s

teeth checked, the

saddle checked, his back

examined and adjusted, perhaps

he’s even had a massage; but have

you had your bridle checked? No?

Surprisingly you are not alone, an

incredibly large number of us very

rarely have a professional to look at

the fit of our horse’s bridle.

When you look at the horses

head; actually look at the function

of the head, you realise that it

performs some of the vital functions

for its very existence. The mouth

– he uses to eat to stay alive. He

communicates with it in times of

stress or extreme excitement. The

eyes – vital for seeing where he is

going and for predatory dangers;

The ears – with range of motion,

constant flicking back and forth for

signs of danger, listening for our

voices and those of his herd; The

brain – for processing all of these

sights and sounds along with other

sensations such as the signals given

when we are riding and interacting

with him.

So with all of these functions

in mind it is small wonder that the

head, proportionally to his body,

has a large amount of nerves.

Twelve pairs of cranial nerves to be

precise which amongst many other

things play a part in eye movement,

sensations from the face, salivation

from the parotid gland, swallowing,

tongue movement, smell, motor to

the muscles for biting and chewing,

sight, hearing and taste plus many

more besides. There is not a lot

of flesh on a horse’s head and

therefore the nerves are never far

also presses on the nerves and

circulatory system of the horses face

causing damage and a great deal

of discomfort and pain. The nasal

bones can also be damaged by

nosebands that are fastened up too

tightly.

All parts of the bridle should

be checked to ensure that they

are neither too tight nor rubbing

or pressing on the bony parts

of the horse’s head. Horses that

are uncomfortable or in pain

very seldom perform well or to

the best of their abilities, though

there are some that will always try

their best for us despite being in

extreme discomfort because of us.

You know yourself that if you are

uncomfortable or in pain you tense

up and your gait is altered, usually

becoming shorter and not so fluid.

Your horse cannot speak in words

but his actions speak volumes, we

have to learn to listen. It is always

surprising and rewarding to see the

difference it can make to a horse’s

demeanour and also their way of

going by simply adjusting their bridle

so that it is more comfortable for

them to wear.

The next time you see your

horse, take some time to study the

head, really study it and appreciate

what a complex and remarkable

structure it is and how easily it can

be affected by simply placing an ill

fitting bridle or piece of equipment

upon it. NM

from the surface of the skin, thus

making them more susceptible to

pain and discomfort from rubbing,

pinching and pressure. When we

place a bridle on the horse’s head

it is vitally important that we do not

interfere with these nerves and the

signals they send back and forth to

the brain.

The bridle should not be in any

way tight and restrictive in its fit, but

neither should it be so loose that

it moves excessively as the horse

moves and therefore causes rubs

or is an annoyance or distraction

for the horse. Headpieces should

be wide enough to avoid undue

pressure on the poll but not so wide

to cause discomfort. The browband

should not be so tight that it pulls the

headpiece forward and onto the back

of the horse’s ears either restricting

their vital movement or causing pain

and sores.

As it is sited over the Auricular

vein and the bony part of the skull

the browband needs to be loose

enough so as not to restrict this

vein or press on the muscles of

the forehead or rub against the

protruding bony areas. Too loose

and the browband will become a

distraction at best and an annoyance

as it thuds up and down against the

forehead.

Nosebands are an area that

come under intense discussion

and debate as there is a school of

thought that feels that the noseband

should be fastened up so tight that

it stops the horse from opening his

mouth when being ridden. Apart

from the fact that this restricts

the horses ability to swallow it

The importance of a well fitting bridle

with Samshield’s

this gives dressage

choice this summer.

The days of

traditional tailoring in

the dressage arena

are certainly changing.

Over the past 12

months, Dressage

Deluxe have seen a real shift in design. To service

this growing market, they created their own ‘Dressage

Deluxe Competition Jacket Collection’, which marries

contemporary design with classic tailoring. The jackets are

made exclusively for them by Mears and are proving really

popular with riders across all levels.

Riders are also changing their attitudes towards their

shirts and whilst Dressage Deluxe still offer plain White

competition shirts, they have also searched extensively

to offer something more unusual. Many riders love their

collection of striped shirts or those with crystal buttons,

to stock Petrie Boots

alongside Konigs boots.

Some styles of the Petrie

boots are narrower at the ankle, making them ideal for

those who find dressage boots uncomfortable, where the

leather creases. Something unique to Petrie is they offer

a complete patent finish, from toe through to shaft, which

really does add a glamorous finish to the riders’ attire.

Away from the test arena and for training, dressage

riders are also looking to ‘colour popping’ for inspiration.

This is where the rider takes a colour, for example a trim

on their saddlecloth and

then echo’s the shade

through another

aspect of their

outfit, such as

their bandages.

This look has

Personal Shopping Service ❘ Dressage Deluxe

As an aspiring dressage rider Alison become frustrated with the constant search for top quality equestrian

items for both herself and her horses. This meant hours trawling local (and not so local) saddlery stores and inevitably having to order items and wait weeks for them. The Internet soon became Alison’s preferred method of shopping, but she still found it difficult to find a one-stop shop that catered for all her needs and so Dressage Deluxe was born – a virtual store with an aim to provide

exceptional products. Alison’s passion for products with an individual touch or something different

or new, means the company searches the length and breadth of Europe in search of the latest must-haves, so

you don’t have to!
