Twinning Program at NUT
Background
NUT has participated in a TP with Malaysia since 1993 as a member of the Japanese
University Consortium. In 2003, NUT inaugurated its first independent TP with Hanoi
University of Science and Technology in Vietnam. Thereafter, NUT has established
TPs in various parts of the world. As of January 2017, NUT is engaged in active TPs
with 8 universities and institutions from 5 different countries. NUT currently accepts
a yearly intake of 30 to 40 TP students in the following 5 courses: Mechanical
Engineering; Electrical, Electronics and Information Engineering; Materials Science
and Technology; Civil and Environmental Engineering; and Information and
Management Systems Engineering.
Nagaoka University of Technology Twinning Program
A Twinning Program (TP) is an international collaborative education program jointly
administered by 2 universities located in different countries. In these programs,
the first half of a student’s undergraduate education is conducted in a university
in their native country; the second half is completed in an overseas university.
The TPs of Nagaoka University of Technology (NUT) aim to nurture the development
of engineers in leadership positions with Japanese language ability, and focus on
young people from regions that are hubs of Japan’s monozukuri culture—the art,
science, and craft of the unique Japanese approach to craftsmanship and
manufacturing—within the increasing globalization of Japanese industry.
Basic Framework
Under each TP, the first half of undergraduate education is conducted at each student’s home
university by local teaching staff for 2.5 (or 3) years, with an emphasis on Japanese language
education and fundamental engineering education. Subsequently, the latter half of education takes
place for 2 years in a Japanese university focusing on advanced engineering education. Students who
have completed Japanese language and fundamental engineering courses are screened (using the
transfer admission examination) by NUT or another consortium university. Students who pass the
examination are allowed to continue their studies in Japan, whereas students who do not qualify to
study in Japan will continue to receive their undergraduate education and obtain a degree from their
home university. Students who complete the curricula of the TP are eligible to earn a bachelor’s
degree from the Japanese university and the home university.
1.Students in the Hanoi TP can be transferred to any of the stipulated member universities of the Japanese University Consortium (Nagaoka University of Technology, Gunma University, Toyohashi University of Technology, Nagoya Institute of Technology, Gifu University, Mie University, Wakayama University, and Kitami Institute of Technology). Similarly, students in the Danang TP can be transferred to some of the stipulated member universities of the Japanese University Consortium (Nagaoka University of Technology, Toyohashi University of Technology, and Gifu University). Students in the Malaysia TP can be transferred to any of the member universities of the Japanese University Consortium, including JUCTe member universities. Students in the Mongolia TP can be transferred to any of the member universities of the Japanese Universities Consortium for Higher Engineering Education Development Project Mongolia Twinning Program.
2. For the Malaysia TP and Zhengzhou TP, the duration of the first half of education is 3 years (6 terms).
3. The undergraduate education duration at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, University of Danang, Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo Leon, and Universidad de Monterrey consists of 10 terms. The duration is 9 terms in Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, and 8 terms in Zhengzhou University and the Mongolian University of Science and Technology.

Characteristics
1. TPs have a clear objective of nurturing engineers
with an understanding of Japanese language and
monozukuri culture
2. The programs enable a shorter period of overseas study
(and an alleviation of financial burden) as the first half of a
student’s education is conducted in their home university
3. With the capability to continuously monitor each student’s
performance in the first half of education, NUT is able
to select exceptional students who are suitable for
the program
4. The programs effectively use a system involving student
transfers in their 3rd year of study (a characteristic of NUT)
5. The dispatch of teaching assistants (TAs) to partner
universities as part of their practical internship training
(a characteristic of NUT) during the first half of TP
education provides mutual benefits to both parties
6. The programs are not reliant on transient financial support,
but are independently sustainable

Technical Japanese Language Education
In the Hanoi TP, Danang TP, Zhengzhou TP, and Monterrey
TP, Japanese students at NUT are dispatched to the
partner universities for overseas practical training, where
they fulfill TA roles in the first half of education. The
TAs are involved in technical Japanese language
education and conduct lectures on the
fundamentals of specialized subjects,
as the on-site Japanese language teaching
staff lack expertise in these topics.
In addition, NUT’s Japanese language
and engineering teaching staff have
collaborated to develop teaching materials
for technical Japanese language education.

4. Teaching materials: Learning Intermediate Japanese through Mechanical Engineering; Learning Intermediate Japanese through Civil Engineering.
5. TA students to prepare lecture portfolios.
6. Teaching material: Japanese Language Workbook for International Students Preparing to Study Engineering.
7. Transfer admission examination policies for mathematics, physics, management, etc.
8. Practical training conducted in conjunction with the intensive courses conducted by NUT’s engineering teaching staff.
Intensive Courses
Intensive courses in fundamental engineering are conducted
by faculty members of NUT and other consortium universities
for all TPs associated with NUT. This provides TP students
with the opportunity to study engineering subjects in Japanese
in the first half of education. The intensive courses are highly
effective in motivating the TP students for studying in Japan.
A part of these intensive courses are conducted using video
conference system.
Short-Term Training Programs
The short-term intensive courses and preadmission
training programs conducted by NUT during the first half
of education have been devised to increase the motivation
of TP students toward studying in Japan and to allow a
smooth transition to the education conducted at NUT.
Short-Term Training Programs for TPs
• Short-Term Intensive Summer Program for TPs (All TPs
excluding the Malaysia TP and Mongolia TP)
• Preadmission Training and Introductory Program

In the Malaysia TP, member universities of the Japanese University Consortium have accepted students as part of the Malaysia Japan Higher Education Program (MJHEP) since 2014.
• Member universities of the Japanese Universities Consortium for Higher Engineering Education Development Project Mongolia Twinning Program that have established a TP with the Mongolian University of Science and Technology (established in June 2015) are as follows: Nagaoka University of Technology, Kitami Institute of Technology, Toyohashi University of Technology, Nagoya Institute of Technology, Kyoto Institute of Technology, Kyushu University, Kumamoto University, Kyushu Institute of Technology, Yamaguchi University, and Wakayama University (as of January 1, 2017).
** HELP1 (a first-stage project of the Malaysia Higher Education Loan Fund Project) started in 1993 and served as a preparatory course for students before they entered a Japanese university. HELP2 began in 1999 and became a TP for students who had completed one year of education in both the preparatory course and university, and were then transferred to the second year of university in Japan. The HELP3 project initiated in 2005 involved students who completed one year of the preparatory course and 2 years at their home university (the first half of education) who were then accepted as third-year students in a Japanese university. Therefore, FY 2005 is regarded as the inauguration year for this program in this table.
*** F or first-year students from FY 2015 onward, the following courses have been reorganized: Civil Engineering and Environmental Systems Engineering have been merged into Civil and Environmental Engineering; and Management and Information Systems Engineering has been renamed Information and Management Systems Engineering. TP students will enter the reorganized courses as third-year students from FY 2017.
