    Leader on the Spot

First connections with NaFFAA:As founding President for Pilipino American Unity for Progress (UniPro) in 2009, I started tomake connections with any possible ally organizations in the NYC area. Having known MeritSalud from previous community work in 2006, I met with him at his house with a few otherfounding officers from UniPro, where we asked him to be an Adviser for us. He mentionedhow he was involved with NaFFAA and that we should meet more of their members fromRegion 1. A few weeks later, I met JT, Nena and Roger at an event at the Philippine Consulateand we began working on projects together.

What I do for NaFFAA: As Executive Director for NaFFAA Region 1, I help coordinatecampaigns and programs within the Northeast to further develop community leadership andachieve collective results. As a member of the Board of Governors, I focus on reaching out toyoung Fil-Am leaders and introducing them to NaFFAA's work.

Things in my personal or professional life that help me in my role in NaFFAA:Whether or not I am in NaFFAA, Im always on the ground where the young community lead-ers gather, whether an event or party. Because of this, combined with my organizing experi-ence, I can make sharp and quick decisions on the basis of both my perspectives and what Isee the new leadership bringing to the table. Also, with my background in civil rights andadvocacy, I usually can connect seemingly neutral issues to how it may affect Filipino Ameri-cans rights.

Steven RagaExecutive Director, NaFFAA Region 1

    Member, Board of Governors

My accomplishments in NaFFAA: Im a new comer to NaFFAA, but

have already been through a lot. I believe Region Is steadfast partnershipwith Filipino American Legal Defense & Education Fund (FALDEF) hasled to a powerhouse in the community in both bringing a plethora ofFilipino American issues to the fore, and then solving them. Im also veryproud of the first Intergenerational (I-Gen) Panel on Community Issues, which Region 1 held at Kean University earlier this month. Starting abrand new program or event can be difficult, so it was encouraging to seeover 100 youth, students, and young professionals making connectionswith the more experienced community leaders.

I believe in the strength of NaFFAA: The broad array of profession-al and community experiences help make NaFFAA the obvious associa-tion for the top Filipino American community leaders to flock towards.

With strong leadership in the state, regional and national level, NaFFAAalso serves as the prime example of selfless leadership to aspire to.

My hopes and dreams for NaFFAA: I would like to see NaFFAAactively recruit leaders from the ranks of the youth, student and youngprofessionals community. There are many up and coming Fil-Am leaderand it may serve NaFFAA and the greater Filipino community more if weconnect with the main organizations directly, and develop active partner-ships.

My message to NaFFAA membership and to the Fil-Am communityThe future looks very bright for the Filipino American community. I hopewe can all continue to push NaFFAA to spread its wings and build towards a more connected, more efficient, and more impactful FilipinoAmerican community; locally, regionally and nationally.

After much excitement over plans for the "Alex Esclamado Me-morial", which may include scholarships, lectures, endowments or evena "Chair", nothing much has reached us in terms of updates. NaFFAArealizes that the committee is collecting forms and other informationbefore meeting to decide how much money to raise, and for what pur-poses these monies will be dedicated to. We welcome suggestions andother ideas from the States and Regional's. Please send them [email protected].

Where Are We with theAlex Esclamado Memorial?

A week ago, a series of exciting emails circulated about the source and origin of a tee-shirt withe NaFFAA logo, the Rizal monument and the UCongress which Atty. Rodel Rodis, found amonhis Detroit 2013 Empowerment Conference souvenitems but could not recall its origin. It was finaltraced as a gift from Nevada - Region 11, as left ovetee shirts from a recent fund raiser which they gavas gifts to friends at the 10th EC. This brought up th2012 discussion among Regional Chairs of a possib

"continuous" fund raiser from the regions, aimed support the National Office in a 50/50 split of thnet.

The concept has two parts: Part I: is fornational fund raiser, either during a national empowerment conference, or through an artist or talengroup that would be sponsored by the different rgions as they travel around the country. Part II: wfor each region to come up with a continuing funraiser, unique to each region, and not in competitiowith other regions. This was so other regions ca

help support the initiative and for regions to havcommitments in support of the National Office. Fexample: Region 11 - Nevada may have exclusivrights in the selling of souvenir tee-shirts during rgional and national conferences. If other regionwant to order tee-shirts for their use, or for sale duing any of NaFFAA's state or regional activities ththey order the same through Region 11. In the Nvember 2012 teleconference, Romy Jurani, RegionChair of Region 11, indicated that he has received thapproval of his board to do this. We will wait for thguidelines for the use of the NaFFAA logo o

NaFFAA identification items which will be discusseat the 2013 Summit. NaFFAA Region 3,- Miwest, is proposing to have auction items, whicthey will sell through the internet, and through staand regional activities. When the item is sold, thRegion will provide the buyer with a Certificate Provenance, indicating the authorship or work of thperson, and other information regarding thitem. This will be launched at the Midwest RegionConference in August 9-11, 2013 in GreenvillOhio. Items are being collected at this time. Fmore information: Contact: [email protected].

What was thought as a "go" is still stuck in the yellow light of uncertain-ty. In mid 2012 a Summit Conference for the Board was scheduled for the end ofMay 2013 and for it to take place in a cruise. The idea was welcomed, and a groupof suggested dates, destinations and costs were circulated. Delegates were search-ing for better deals, and so they should. This was in light of expenses incurred bydelegates to the 10th EC in Detroit, which included airline fares and hotelcosts. The idea that the costs for a cruise will be inclusive of board and lodgingseemed to be a great concept. It still is. Ed Navarra, National Chair has appointed

Jing Espiritu (Vice Chair, Region 11) and Giselle Rushford, (Regional Chair, Region5) as Co-Chairs for the cruise. After the national teleconference in November 2012,there were concerns raised regarding possible conflicts with activities involving thenational celebration of Asian-American month in May, and the possibility of find-ing more affordable cruise costs. Jing and Giselle are continuing to look into thesepossibilities. In the meantime, there are suggestions for a search for another city asa venue, and Washington DC seemed to top the list, as a "to go" and see what thereis in Washington DC, since NaFFAA national believes that NaFFAA should have apresence in Washington DC. Email your editor with your thoughts and sugges-tions.
