Recovery Film Festival 2018RFF-1 Holden On Thursday, May 31 from 7:30 p.m. – 9:45 p.m. General Assembly B
The award winning film, Holden On, is one of the most important films of the decade. Holden Layfield, whose real story is depicted, helps audiences through his harrowing tale in this film set in the early 1990s. After succumbing to a secret battle with mental illness, 17-year old Holden devolves from a gregarious, small-town Georgian football player to a lost, self-medicating prophet. This important film portrays the complexity of mental illness and suicide in teens, offers insight to prevention, and opens the door to conversation about this difficult, but vital human concern. Join us for a post-screening discussion with Director Tamlin Hall, lead actor Matthew Fahey, supporting actor Steve Ellis, and Holden’s father Bob Layfield.
RFF-2 The Work Friday, June 1 from 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. General Assembly B
Step inside Folsom Prison with three men from the outside as they join level-four convicts for a four-day intensive group therapy retreat. Together, they will all participate in “the work” of revealing their most raw emotions in order to rid themselves of the deep aggression they feel inside. One at a time, the men from the inside get in touch with themselves, break down, and all at once begin to heal. Surprisingly, it’s the men from outside that must let go of their preconceived notions of what they’re supposed to feel what the prisoners want them to feel, and release the pain and anger they’ve collected over time. While it’s easy to write off violent convicts as they sit in prison, The Work drops us behind the walls and alters your perception of rehabilitation. The only request from the men: listen without judgment. The Work takes viewers on an emotional rollercoaster with results that are alternately terrifying and cathartic. Please join us for a post-screening discussion with Director Jarius McLeary, his brother James McLeary—who created the program featured in this film, and one of the men featured in the film, who has since been paroled.

ies Don’t Miss the Powerful Opening
and Closing Ceremonies!
Opening CeremonyWednesday May 30, 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.George R. Brown Convention Center, Exhibit Hall B3
We kick-off with an unforgettable afternoon of entertainment, inspiration and education. From federal partners, program graduates, and celebrity guests, the opening ceremony will set the tone for the week ahead.
The 2018 Parade of Transformation features treatment court graduates telling their courageous stories of healing and recovery.
Closing CeremonySaturday June 2, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.George R. Brown Convention Center, Exhibit Hall B3
We’ll close out the conference with a visit from our good friend Elmo! Everybody’s favorite furry three year old will join us to discuss our partner-ship with Sesame Workshop and the resources available to you and your program.
The closing will also include a stirring tribute to the 10th anniversary of veterans treatment courts, the dramatic swearing in of the Justice For Vets National Mentor Corps and one of the most powerful closing keynotes we’ve ever had.
In the fall of 2017, Retired Admiral James “Sandy” Winnefeld and his wife Mary lost their son to an opioid overdose. Channeling their grief into action, they now run the non-profit SAFE, Stop the Addiction Fatality Epidemic.

GS-1 Advancing Justice: Research-Driven Solutions for Treatment Courts and Beyond NADCP’s new Advancing Justice initiative leverages the expertise and passion of treatment court practi-tioners to explore, investigate and advance research-driven and promis-ing solutions to some of the most pressing and pervasive issues facing the justice system. This session will explore three critical topics addressed by Advancing Justice in its first year: a report from the inaugural Journal for Advancing Justice on equity and inclusion, an exploration of how law enforcement is assisting community stakeholders in addressing issues around public health and public safety and a dynamic presentation confront-ing the harsh realities and persistent myths surrounding medication in addiction treatment.

GS-2Turning Points: Critical Events on the Road to Long-Term RecoveryThe road out of active addiction and crippling mental disorder and into health, wellness and sustained recov-ery can be a long and arduous one. There are pivotal moments, events and milestones on that journey that can alter the course of a life—turning points. Hosted by Terrence Walton, this session will feature intimate con-versations with three advocates for long-term recovery, who will describe some of those turning points using their own stories and those of others. Brian Cuban, author of The Addicted Lawyer, will share his journey and how his two brothers, including Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, tried to help him even when he was unable to help himself. Former Mississippi state senator Neely Carlton Lyons lives a life dedicated to assisting individuals and families facing addiction in their quest to experience a long-term, sustainable recovery. Drawing on her experience as a public official and attorney, as well as her personal journey, Mrs. Lyons will offer an unforgettable and inspiring perspective. Dr. Isaiah Pickens is a clinical psychologist, author, and television personality who describes the healing process as a roller coaster ride that twists and turns our expectations—making it difficult to find the path to a place of whole-ness. Dr. Pickens’ description of this process will enlighten us all as we pursue our own paths to wholeness, while trying to help others.

GS-3 Little Children, Big Challenges: Partnering to Bring Help, Hope and Healing to Counteract the Effects of Trauma on the Vulnerable Children and Families of Treatment Court Participants
Brought to you by: Sesame Street and NADCP
This session offers an in-depth look at Sesame Street in Communities, a new family engagement model and resource center that treatment court professionals and participants will find invaluable. Recently launched in three disparate pilot communities, the site presents bilingual research-based strategies and resources to support children’s early learning, health, and well-being and lessen the impact of adversity on young children while engaging the important adults in their lives. Recognizing the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (or trauma) on children’s brain- and overall well-being and its relationship to chil-dren’s present and future development, Sesame Street’s holistic approach reflects current findings about the best ways to foster resiliency, health and learning in children, particularly the most vulnerable. Sesame Street in Communities provides families, educators and service providers with a wealth of free resources designed to engage families in everyday activities to help all children become smarter, stronger and kinder. Building on last year’s fascinating general session by Sesame Street, this session will provide even more useful information, including a status report on the Sesame Street/NADCP partnership, designed to benefit drug courts worldwide.
