    Our Mission

The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of

Colored People is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic

equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racialdiscrimination.

The mission of the NAACP Youth & College Division shall be to

inform youth of the problems affecting African Americans and other racial

and ethnic minorities; to advance the economic, education, social and

    political status of

African Americans and other racial and ethnic minorities and their

harmonious cooperation with other peoples; to stimulate an appreciation of

the African Diaspora and other people of colors contribution to civiliza-

tion; and to develop an intelligent, militant effective youth leadership.

Our History and Purpose of Event For 100 years, the NAACP built and grew on the collective courage

of thousands of people. People of all races, nationalities and faiths united

on one premisethat all men and women are created equal. From the bal-

lot box to the boardroom and onto college campuses, the NAACP has been

the leading organization in the ght for civil rights and social justice. They

have involved everyone from school children to laborers to professionals topresidents to just ordinary men and women, and students who decided to

champion whats right and just. The nations oldest civil rights organization

has changed Americas history and will continue to do so in the years ahead.

The purpose of this event is to celebrate the signicant role the or-

ganization has played in leading social change in America. At the NAACP,

weve been working for 100 years to make this moment possible. From

Brown v. Board of Education to Rosa Parks to President Barack Obama,

courage and hard work have set the stage for victories that many of us

thought wed never see. So today we celebrate those collective victories as

a people and hold on to the belief that we can anticipate many more in our

    future.

    President Address

    Executive Board 2008-2009

The Executive Board and members of the National Association forthe Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Buffalo Youth and College

Chapter would like to welcome you to our First Centennial Banquet. We are

very excited that all of you have come to commemorate with us on this very

special night. NAACP was founded One hundred years ago and since then

minorities have been able to overcome many obstacles with the help of the

    NAACP.

In 1999 the youth and college chapter was founded at the Universityof Buffalo. Since then we have grown. At rst we were a club ghting for

membership and the spotlight. We have expanded many programs. We have

been able to educate and entertain our college peers at the same time. Over

the past two years we have received POC club of the year. We are celebrat-

ing 100 years, which means everything is being done bigger and better than

the previous years. I am very fortunate and honored to be president this

year. I started as an activities coordinator and have earned my way to be-ing president over the past 3 years. This has not been an easy ride, but with

the help of the past and present executive board members before me I have

had some type of guidance. They paved the way for me and thanks to them

I have been able to expand and make NAACP bigger and better than ever

before. Nothing would be possible without devoted members. The members

who have stuck by us when administration was giving us a hard time are the

reasons we are here today. The motto I follow each day is What doesntkill you only makes you stronger. A great man once said The ultimate

measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where

he stands at times of challenge and controversy (Martin Luther King Jr.). I

have obtained the skills to overcome many challenges and my goal in life is

to give people the skills that they need to overcome similar challenges. One

hundred years strong and we cant be stopped. We came, we saw and we are

still conquering. NAACP will never become complacent. We know there is

always work to be done and for the next One hundred years we will con-

tinue to work, especially for our youth. Our vision is to help develop a new

generation of leaders. NAACP has made a leader out of me, and for that I

am very grateful. I hope everyone has a swell night and enjoy themselves as

    we celebrate.

    Kimberly K. Lindo, Vice-President

Upon joining the Executive Board for the 2008-2009 academic

year, I thought this opportunity would be just a hobby, an extracurricular

activity. A year later Im beginning to realize that I stumbled on my pur-

pose. Not just my personal purpose, but what I believe to be the purposeof human beings as a whole. On a college campus, some of us may feel we

dont have the ability to touch as many people as we think may be suf-

cient in order to generate change. I beg to differ. Mahatma Gandhi said:

Be the change you want to see in the world. The movement towards cre-

ating a better world didnt start with us and it wont end with us, but while

were here we should make the most of it. So be seless and serve, expect-

ing nothing in return, be bold and courageous unafraid of being different,do something that will be remembered long after you are not and most

importantly, do your part to leave your mark. For those that are involved

with student organizations or outside community clubs, political clubs

and other endeavors, from the NAACP at UB Youth and College Chapter,

we commend you for your dedication and encourage you to continue and

    strive towards excellence.

    Freddy Guerrero, Treasurer

Success and failure. We think of them as opposites, but theyre really not. Their

companions, with every failure comes success in life.

When one door closes another opens. But often we look so long so regretfully

upon the closed door that we fail to see the one that has

    opened for us.

AbouttheGuestSpeakerByron William Brown II was born in Queens, NY and was elected

on November 8, 2005 as the 58th mayor of Buffalo, New York and is the

citys rst African American mayor. He rose to elective ofce after serving

in a variety of political roles. He began his political career performing as an

aide to local representatives in several legislative bodies (Buffalo CommonCouncil, Erie County Legislature and New York State Assembly) and later

getting involved in a regional political organization.

After several roles as a legislative aide, he was appointed to an Erie

County cabinet-level post as the Erie County Director of Equal Employ-

ment Opportunity. Since taking ofce, Mayor Brown has followed those

three guiding principles by launching a Zero Tolerance Law Enforcement

initiative targeting quality of life crimes, along with other criminal activity

in the city; implemented the management accountability tracking CitiStat

Buffalo program, which monitors city departments service delivery activi-

ties on a weekly basis; and recongured the citys economic development

activities by creating the Department of Economic Development, Permit

and Inspection Services, a change that has provided greater coordination

and cooperation in all development activities taking place in the City of

    Buffalo.
