    INTRODUCTION

The wise step taken by the College to go for National Assessment andAccreditation remains as a milestone in the glorious history of our unique institution. This endeavor, which takes us back to the amazing birth and growth of this etra !ordinary institution, provides us with a clear insight into our onward march towardsthe horizon of learning and indomitable spirit of knowledge.

"ndia has a proud legacy of conducting democracy successfully in these fifty

nine years of independence. #ne of the prerequisites of the success of democracy isthe educated and enlightened public. "t is to this end either the $overnment of "ndia

or the %tate $overnment have tempered their educational policies. Compulsoryelementary education, provision of secondary education to the most possible and the

introduction of modern approaches in higher education are some of the efforts made inthis direction. "n a country like "ndia it is not possible for the $overnment to provideeducation on a large scale to meet the needs of the multitudes. &ence privateorganizations with enthusiasm and dedication have come forward voluntarily andestablished a good number of academic institutions in urban areas. &owever ruralareas have been neglected without any progress and eposure.

"n these conditions, thirty si years ago, a small lamp of knowledge was lit in

Nagaram, a small village of hardly a thousand thatched houses. Nagaram is on the'epalle ! (apatla road, )* kms. +est of 'epalle in $untur ist, a district of Andhra

-radesh wellknown for rich social, economic, religious, literary and historical traditions. This village was originally in 'epalle taluk and subsequently it was made the headquarters of the -allapatla taluk on reorganization of taluks. And now it is the /andalheadquarters.

Though Nagaram is a small village with less than 0111 population, it has alocational advantage in that, that it has a number of villages all around within a radiusof 2 or * miles. After independence, these villages fall within one of the most backward

areas educationally, socially and economically in the district. (ut in %atavahanasperiod, a village namely (hattiprolu of this region flourished as a local center of

(uddhism and historical monuments available here confirmed it also. Chandolu ofthis region, nearer to Nagaram became the capital of 3elanati cholas, a politicallypowerful kingdom of coastal Andhra in medieval times. uring (ritish reign,Nizampatnam, a harbour near Nagaram stood as a remarkable trade point. /anyrenowned freedoms fighters like %ri uggirala $opala 4rishnaiah and 5ate %ri /antena3enkata 'a6u, former member of our managing committee etc., of this region played anactive role in freedom struggle. 7nfortunately this area remained as a forgottencorner of 'epalle Taluk in free "ndia, backward in all respects notably in education. /ost

of the people here were illiterates as they were farmers. They were deprived ofproviding higher education to their children. There were 01 high schools in this taluk

but not even a single college in late sities. 8very year about *11 boys used to go totowns like Tenali, $untur and /achilipatnam for collegiate education.

"t is difficult to say why some ideas see the light of the day and are fulfilled, while many others are not born or forgotten. #ne such was the idea that a seat ofhigher education would be started in 'epalle taluk. This came to a group ofenlightened, patriotic and philanthropic gentlemen who soon banded themselves into'epalle Taluk 8ducational "mprovement %ociety. r.N.3.4rishna 'ao was one of them.

An opportunity came to these determined men when they received a call from 5ate %ri3elagapudi 'amakrishna to come to /adras to discuss the feasibility of starting a

college at Nagaram. 5ate %ri 3elagapudi 'amakrishna belongs to (ellamvaripalem onlytwo miles from Nagaram. Though he rose to eminence as an administrator,

entrepreneur and industrialist, he never forgot the area to which he belonged. &e wasalways mindful of the industrial development of this area and subsidiary sources ofincome and employment for the rural youth. &e thus started a sugar factory atNagaram, but soon he realized that its turnout was far below its capacity, and it wastherefore shifted to Chagallu in +est $odavari istrict. #n his sick bed he gaveassurance to r. N.3.4rishna 'ao that he was prepared to give the entire site of the

The immense help, valuable guidance and generous cooperation etended bythe members of this committee combined with the undisturbed perseverance, obsessional commitment and single minded devotion to work made the ideal of %ri3.'amakrishna real.

    The Emblem of our College:

The emblem of our College is the symbolic epression of the ob6ective of the

establishment of this ideal institution. "t reflects our /otto B Tamasoma@yothirgamaya9 which means that the radiant light of knowledge spread everywhereepels darkness of ignorance from the world. The torch is the means which showsone the way to reach the destination safely. The rays of light emitted from the torchrepresent the inevitable diffusion of knowledge. The three magic words under thetorch Truth, 5ove and $od are three divine principles that constitute true knowledge."n conformity with the emblem chosen by the founders of our College, our institutionsince its inception goes on epelling darkness i.e., ignorance from the minds ofbackward people of this sleepy and remote area and provides real education on the

basis of three divine principles ! Truth, 5ove and $od.

The Great Benefactors of the College:

"t is said that nations without vision perish. "t is also true of the individuals.%ri 3elagapudi 'amakrishna was a man of vision. The birth and growth of thisinstitution reflected his vision. &e was the greatest son of this soil. &e was aneceptional genius and a man of outstanding personality. After his education in8ngland, he was selected for ".C.%. "n his service, he occupied several decisivepositions in different fields. To give real shape to his noble dreams of public service,

he resigned to his 6ob nine years before his retirement and established a chain ofindustries in Andhra and #rissa. %oon he became a giant among industrialists and

nation builders. &is efforts to bring wealth to his village by sugar factory did notsucceed. +hen there was a suggestion to establish a college near his place of birth,he gave his blessings and promise to this new enterprise without hesitation from his

sickbed. This rural area is etremely grateful to him for ever.

"n many countries, certain families played a distinguished role in the political, economic and social affairs. %uch were the (ush family in recent times in the 7.%.A,and the Nehru and the $andhi families in our country. %imilarly the 3elagapudi

family had played a pioneering role in the economic life of coastal Andhra districts.%ri 3. 'amakrishna was the man who started the family on its 6ourney to fame,

    fortune and popularity.

%ri 3elagapudi 'amakrishna was singularly fortunate in his children. &isdaughter %mt.-.'a6eswary 'amakrishnan is a person of many gifts and eminent in herown right. &er father moulded her in his image. %he was fortunate in her marriage

as she was married into a family of industrialists of Coimbatore. 8ver busy inadministering and guiding many industries, acquiring power and glory, %mt.-.'a6eswary 'amakrishnan never forgot her father, nor the village, she came from.

After her father9s death she came forward and gave full support to the 'epalleTaluk 8ducational "mprovement %ociety headed by r. N.3.4rishna 'ao to redeem the

pledge of her father. %he became the permanent -resident of the 8ecutive Committeeof the %ociety.

%ri 3.5. utt is a true heir to that distinguished 3elagapudi family and itstraditions. &e had his higher education in 8ngland and inherited from his father entrepreneurial talents, innovative wisdom, daring dynamism and clarity of vision. &eknew the end of wealth is ultimately happiness and well being of people. 5ike hisfather, he is a man of vision. To perpetuate his father9s memory he donated toeducational institutions that amounted to crores of rupees. ortunately ours is one ofthem. &e is the permanent member of our college 8ecutive Committee.

%ri -.'. 'amakrishnan, husband of %mt. -.'a6eswary 'amakrishnan is the son of5ate 3.'angaswami Naidu known as the father of Tetile "ndustry in Coimbatore. &ewas the pioneer of varied industries and the founder of reputed technical educationalinstitutions. &e became the permanent vicepresident of our eecutive committee ofour college.

    The Architects of our College:

"n our country to think of an institution is largely to think of a person behind

it, who has nourished it, sustained it, shaped it and strengthened it by giving hisbest, and inspiring others to give their best to it as well. %uch was r.N.3.4rishna'ao to %.3.'./.College,Nagaram. r.N.3.4rishna 'ao of 'epalle Taluk was a reputeddoctor, wellknown philanthropist, a social worker, friend and patron of all worthy causes.%ri 3.'amakrishna and his family found in him the needed dreamer and devotedworker to whom the task of nurturing the institution of learning could be safelyentrusted. &e was known and respected for his integrity and honesty in 'epalleTaluk. "t was true, that only because of him, the committee could raise * D lakhs ofrupees as donations from the public for the College. &e worked day and night for it.

&e was the member of 8ecutive Committee and ultimately the founder %ecretaryand Correspondent of our College.

    r. N.3.4rishna 'ao was singularly fortunate enough to have an amiable, understanding and efficient -rincipal %ri 4.7mavaramurthy to face the challenge of thebirth and growth of this young sapling. %ri 4.7mavara /urthy, a -rincipal from a $ovt.college on deputation has a tender heart, humanitarian outlook and keen interest inliterature and art. &is latent qualities of idealism and academic vision blendedtogether turned him into a perfect administrator. &e visualized correctly that a ruralinstitution like ours survives only by its academic achievements.

These two eminent persons of distinctive stature laid a sound foundation of

this reputed college. The proud record of our College over the years with a richtradition of discipline and sincerity of learning revealed their memorable services andsacrifices.

A Rich Tradition of disciline and learning:

The future of an institution is evident from the founders and architects of thatinstitution. The ideals of them sanction a bright future. #ur founder %ecretary

and Correspondent %ri N.3.4rishna 'ao believed that only men of character andcompetence could promote ecellence in what ever they did. &e did not interfere

and did not allow others to interfere with the selection process in the matter ofappointment of our College staff and left it entirely to the interviewing committee

composed of eperts. The first -rincipal shared his views and they two wereetremely happy to have a band of devoted and enthusiastic lecturers whocompletely identified themselves with the fortunes of the institution. The

management gave all they could by the way of buildings, laboratories, furniture andequipment, quarters for staff, hostel for students. "t was then the task of the teachersto mould the institution after their hearts desire and discharge the main function

namely impart education. (ut r. N.3.4rishna 'ao and %ri 4. 7mavaramurthy togetherbelieved that without discipline no worthwhile academic work was possible. They

took certain steps in this direction.

#ur management is particular about the quality rather than the quantity. Therefore it has set the maimum strength of the College as thousand and is alwaysresolute to stick to that number as far as it is possible.

Not a rupee has been collected by way of donation or otherwise from anystudent for administration. %ri -.'amakrishnan, our permanent 3ice-residentsuggested to abandon elections for students union in order to build up peacefulatmosphere of the College. "t has been adopted . ormation of students union with

office bearers on the basis of their performance in the proceeding public eaminationshas been introduced. rom time to time it is sought to impress upon the students how

elections can vitiate the whole atmosphere with commercial viruses and political

fevers and fill it with a delirium of hatred. 7tmost care has been taken in conductingpublic eaminations, absolutely free from malpractices. -eriodical tests have beenintroduced and saw to it that teaching is done effectively. 5ike peace, discipline isindivisible. There is no discipline in the college with in disciplined hostel. $reat carehas been taken in making the hostel and its administration free from corruption andindiscipline. -olitics, Casteism and usual strikes are kept away from college as far as

    possible.

#ur first -rincipal enthused the colleagues to take an active interest in etra

curricular activities. &is fertile brain planned in a thousand ways to provide usefuloutlets to the students of this rural college. The elocution and debating clubsfunctioned freely with his active support. &is plans included philatelical club ,Camera club, periodical playing of music to the students, study of birds throughbinoculars, to observe stars using a telescope and many other stimulating activities.&e used to acquaint the teachers with the latent trends in different fields ofknowledge and advised them to follow contemporary trends through the foreign andnative magazines of good standard. #ur library can boast of a great number ofbooks in &umanities, %ciences and on art, %culpture and architecture.

(oth the founder secretary and the first -rincipal were intellectuals with a good

taste in literature, art, architecture, sciences etc. They planned several functions,

seminars and conferences and organized them successfully. 8minent men like the3iceChancellors,%cientists,Chief@ustices,-rofessors,Teachers,"ndustrialists,educationists,poets, persons in high position used to come and attended these functions. 5ayingfoundation for the main building of the College by the -resident of "ndia %ri 3.3.$iri,the ecennial function, %ilver @ubilee function, A.-. &istory Congress session weresome of them. #ur -resident of "ndia %ri 3.3.$iri, the great %cientist Nayudamma,-rof. 8ither the management or the -rincipal always encouraged the staff to improvetheir academic ecellence. "n return the staff motivated the students to reach the

higher levels of learning . The management and the staff faced problems togetheras they were normal to any growing institution of learning. They overcame all thetroubles with a conviction that this institution was a means of honest service in thecause of the poor and deprived. or eight years, our college was unaided. #urmanagement has born the cost of salaries, roughly a lakh of rupees per month even in

accreditation by National Assessment and Accreditation Council, (angalore.

"t is our ob6ective to train up students in all dimensions. #ur N%%, NCC and

-hysical 8ducation wings have established a good record in the state. (esides manyother associations are working to develop a broad out look among students.

"n these three and half decades of its eistence, thousands of students passedthrough this college portals. /any colleges and schools have been established aroundand away from Nagaram in these years. /any of our students are working in theseinstitutions along with many others in various fields. "n their gratitude, they gifted oldstudents buildings in the form of donations. "n this way, our College has brought asilent revolution in our poverty ridden region .

+here once stood ruined walls and thorny bushes, now stand beautiful and

fully equipped laboratories and spacious lecture halls, a beautiful library, often praised

as an architectural marvel by distinguished visitors, Archaeological /useum,Administrative buildings, a set of staff quarters and hostel for boys and girls were built.A visitor to the college will at once be impressed by the clean, green and calm campusof our college. #ne leaves the institution with a bundle of pleasant feelings. All this hasbeen possible because of the devoted staff, the disciplined students and the dynamic andenlightened management.

+e look forward to future to work with commitment and make our institutionpurely an academic institution where students get all round development and training.
