Preparing Your Presentation

Put the participants at the center. They need time to reflect, practice, ask questions.

• Share information that will elevate the field and increase youth learning, engagement, and well being.

• Provide hands-on trainings to peers with the time and space to ideate, practice, get feedback, learn in a safe space.

• Skip background info, share case studies, resources, time to work in teams or play around. If you have the time, icebreakers are great.

• Help NAA grow a network of connected and engaged afterschool professionals. Elevate your own experience and leadership.

Page 33: NAA18 Presenter Prep Webinar 1 · 2018-02-02 · National AfterSchoolAssociation (NAA) Convention 2018 Presenter Prep Webinar #1 February 1, 2018 Hosted by Erin Leonard & Shaina Cook

Participant Perspective

I go to Convention to...

• Gain new insights and learn from the successes or mistakes of others

• Share their own insights, tips, and tools• Network and meet new people• Take home tools, information, templates, worksheets, and

other materials they can share with their organization• Meet with leaders in the field, connect with presenters• Get inspired, leave with new ideas and inspiration

Page 34: NAA18 Presenter Prep Webinar 1 · 2018-02-02 · National AfterSchoolAssociation (NAA) Convention 2018 Presenter Prep Webinar #1 February 1, 2018 Hosted by Erin Leonard & Shaina Cook

2017 Participant Feedback

What we hear from participants:• The workshops are OUTSTANDING! So much learning and fun.• Smaller sessions were informative. Time to ask questions.• I loved playing games I can teach my kids.• I got great resources and information that I will use immediately.• I really loved the exhibitor sessions.

Page 35: NAA18 Presenter Prep Webinar 1 · 2018-02-02 · National AfterSchoolAssociation (NAA) Convention 2018 Presenter Prep Webinar #1 February 1, 2018 Hosted by Erin Leonard & Shaina Cook

Participant Feedback

What could we improve in workshops?• Advanced workshops were not quite advanced enough• More best practices • Too much focus on education. Not enough FUN workshops.

What tools could we provide that would be helpful to participants?• Links to educational tools to use in their afterschool program• Statistics and evidence-based research in digestible amounts• Examples of things that work for other programs and things that I

could try in my program

Page 36: NAA18 Presenter Prep Webinar 1 · 2018-02-02 · National AfterSchoolAssociation (NAA) Convention 2018 Presenter Prep Webinar #1 February 1, 2018 Hosted by Erin Leonard & Shaina Cook

Now – March 1

• Outline your presentation before designing• Meet with your co-presenters to assign roles• Ensure your content matches your title, description• Ask a colleague to listen to you rehearse• Practice makes perfect• Use handouts for background info, resources, or

tools to continue their learning. Start gathering them.

• Slide decks not required – be creative!• No slides yet, hold on that!

Page 37: NAA18 Presenter Prep Webinar 1 · 2018-02-02 · National AfterSchoolAssociation (NAA) Convention 2018 Presenter Prep Webinar #1 February 1, 2018 Hosted by Erin Leonard & Shaina Cook

Set clear goals (1-3) for your presentation: • What should attendees know going out that they

didn’t going in? • What will they do once they leave?• What resources will they need?

Use goals to drive your content

Set Goals

Only Keep Core Content

• You likely don’t have enough time for all of your content. CUT anything unnecessary.

• Adults concentrate in 5 minute intervals. • Ask questions throughout. “Has anyone experienced this?”

“What strategies do you use?”• Encourage note taking. • Have time for group work, practice, and feedback

• Stick to your learning arc• Get them from point A to B
