sacs AG8(f)/I-IK 1'72/'75/416THE FOLLOWING LETTER WAS HEARD OVER SHORT WAVEFROM BATAVIA On 30th March 19431-FROM - sx 4989 PTE WALTER R.C. 5?/¢4'¢'6so - Mrs 12.0. Walter, c/- J.F'. Carter, BazaarsS.A.My Dear Wife,We have just received permission to write lettersso I will take this opportunity to assure you that I am quite okayand have had only the best of health since you last heard from me.I hope that you and the childrenhave been enjoying the best ofhealth also. When you have read this will you let Mum, Dad, Donand the rest oi‘ my relations and friends know that you have heardfrom me. Also I send my love to Mum and Dad, and tell themthatthey need not spend any of their time worrying about me, as we arebeing treated very well indeed and have everything we need formaintaining our health. Now if I tell you a little about camp, you will see for yourself that ourconditions are pretty good.We are camped in billets that are fitted with electirc. light. Everyman has a (Bag) or (bed board) for sleeping on. Close by ourbarrack room is a recreation ground on which soccer is playedalmostcontinuously. There is also a gymnasium, so that if onewants exercise it is quite easy to get it. There is also a camplibrary so that one can get all the reading one wants. Anotherthing that is much appreciated by the boys is thecanteen, whereinit is possible to buy certain things which add greatly to ourcomfort. We are getting three good meals a day and even thoughour diet is a little monotonous, there is plenty of it, We arevery forttmate in being billcttedat a place with such a pleasantclimate. It is not too hot in the daytime and not too cold atnight. It is as a matter or fact an ideal climate. Periodicallywe have community singing or a concert. The concerts areremarkably good assome of the boys are surprisingly good. Well, darling, I think that is all the news for you that I have at presentso once again I ask you to remember me to friends and relativesespecially Pat and Jean, and I hope that it will not belong beforewe are together once again. Until then my dear I hope that youand the kids enjoy the host of everything. Keep smiling.I remain, yours forever, RICHARD. As it is getting close to(Mavis) Don's and your own birthday, Iwish you all many happy -~ ‘zreturns. Love. RICHARD. £14’-~‘. ‘K\Z» i
