RoadTrip Irish Eyes Are Smiling on Dover

WHERE: Dover, Del.

WHY: Irish pride on parade, lucky bets and Guinness.

HOW FAR: About 3.5 miles from start to finish. Dover is about 95 milesfrom Washington, a two-hour drive.

O n Saturday, the capital of the Blue Hen State turns shamrockgreen. To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day (albeit two days early),Dover’s Irish community will spread the Gaelic joy with a2 p.m. parade down West Loockerman Street, leprechaun-

leapin’ music and, of course, green beer toasts.The city’s Irish roots predate the American Revolution; large numbers

of indentured Irish and Scottish immigrants settled here in the late 17thcentury. In 1777, the year Dover became the state capital, Irish Amer-icans made up a significant population in the burgeoning area. Evenmore Emerald Isle natives moved in during the Civil War as Confederateloyalists left town for friendlier parts.

Modern Dover still shows flashes of its Irish history. On Loockerman,its pedestrian-friendly main drag, visitors can grab a drink at an Irish tav-ern that features a countdown clock for the holiday, try on a Claddaghring at a jewelry store and pick up Celtic talismans at a Wiccan shop —all without breaking a sweat.

For the St. Patrick’s Day parade, the area’s Irish and others come outin force. On display: school marching bands, homegrown beauty queensand about 20 floats from such boosters as Irish Mike’s Olde Towne Pub(a favorite hangout of the Irish Green Goats Drinking Team) and the Do-ver-based Irish Society of Delmarva.

“It’s a wonderful time,” society president Mary Dalton says. “It’s hardto describe the feeling of the celebration, but it’s something you feel inyour heart.”

WEDNESDAY IN STYLE Escapes finds gold in the Daffodil Capital of America, in Virginia’s Tidewater region.

I t’s a common story in the musicindustry: An artist posts a

video on the Web, that clip goesviral, and before said artist canbook his next no-namecoffeehouse gig, he hears RyanSeacrest introducing his song ona Top 40 radio station.

Well, if ever a music act wasmeant to be discovered on theInternet, it’s iBand, anelectronica trio from Austriawhose “instruments” arehandheld electronic devices. AniPhone or iPod Touch provides amelody with indie softwarecompany Moo-Cow-Music’sPianist application, which givesusers one octave of piano keys ata time to play on theirtouchscreens. Another suppliesthe base beat with thePocketGuitar app, and a thirdprovides the percussion withMoo-Cow-Music’s Drummerprogram.

The band’s first videoemployed a Nintendo DS using

Electroplankton, a quirky musicgame, to create the rhythmsection, but sadly, the DS waskicked out in favor of the iPodTouch.

The band — made up ofone-name artists Marina, Rogerand Seb — posted its first song,“Jam Session,” on YouTube onFeb. 17. The eerie ambient tune— reminiscent of Mark Snow’s“The X-Files Theme” — struck achord with viewers. Thousandschimed in to voice theirapproval. By Feb. 18, a fan clubhad sprouted up on Facebook. (Ithas just a handful of members sofar, but, hey, it’s been only a fewweeks.)

The three manually dexterousmembers of iBand are far fromthe first people to post videos ofthemselves playing music oniPhones. But most otheriMusicians, such as a guy whokicked out a Beatles medley onPocketGuitar and a fast-fingeredfellow who tapped out Coldplay’s

“Clocks” with the piano app, justseem to be messing around, notcomposing original music. IBandhas its own Web site, www.iband.at, where in several videosyou can see what performers theplayers have become, adding“costumed” hands and vocals.

The band has a lot of fans onYouTube, where its debut videogarnered about 2 million viewsin two weeks. Among its biggestfans are users named thePrincess Aurora, the PrincePhilip and the Mistress of AllEvil (or perhaps they’re all the

same person), who have spentcountless hours slappingalternate soundtracks ontoscenes from Disney’s “SleepingBeauty.” And, judging by theYouTube commenters and the fanclub contingent, iBand seems tobe huge in Germany. Look out,Hasselhoff!
