As we celebrate our achievements this past year- the one thing I continue to struggle with is that we underperformed on the 5 Step Checkout Process. I believe that top to bottom we need to improve this process if we are going to be successful in 2009. The one measurement that we can take away from the 5 Step Checkout Process that will exemplify the entire process is CMN contributions. Everything is dependant upon how well we collect these donations. We cannot achieve success with CMN contributions without successfully administering all other steps. This is why it is so critical.

Our Goals for CMN donations:

Daily: $500 Weekly: $3,500 Monthly: $15,000 Annual: $180,000

No, I am not crazy- this can be done! All it requires is strong leadership, diligence, and an understanding of the mission. I see our largest obstacle as the continued passiveness of some register operators. We have to find a way to break through this group. I know I can count on you and I look forward to enjoying all the success that meeting our goals will bring.

Hello Folks,

Please help me out with an on-going issue. A couple of customers stated to me and other members of management that they loved our store, it is always clean, the associates are friendly, and they enjoy shopping here- but the amount of smokers that congregate around the front doors is getting out of hand. One customer stated that her husband is asthmatic and this caused issues. Others don’t like to walk through a cloud of smoke in order to enter the store.

Not only can it be a health risk for folks being subjected to second hand smoke- but it also looks really unprofessional to have a bunch of associates standing around the entrances. Our store provides a smoking area for all smokers to enjoy out of the sun and away from the doors. Please utilize this as it is intended. Thank you in advance for being considerate of others-

Our W2’s have not arrived yet- but we should get them by no later than January 31st. Sorry for the inconvenience.

From the FrontlinesFrom the FrontlinesFrom the FrontlinesFrom the Frontlines As you might already know- we process most checks electronically. The check reader processes the check, and then a slip prints for the customer to sign. An update to this process is coming by the end of this month. With this update- the customer will now be prompted to sign their signature on the key pad instead of the slip of paper. Simpler for everyone. Be sure to watch for this change when you ring up your next transaction.

Ray hinted that if we manage to raise $75,000 for Children’s Miracle Network by July 1st- he, and maybe some other managers, will do some crazy stunt again! The question is: what will he do? I don’t know what can top the “Mantanas Show”. I want your opinions- what do you want Ray to do if we raise $75,000 for CMN by July 1st? Drop your suggestions off in the Comment Box by the Co-Managers office. We will narrow down the list and have everyone vote on the favorite suggestions at one of our meetings. Let’s have fun, but keep it safe. ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺

I wanted to personally thank everyone that purchased a DVD of the Mantana’s performance from me or Marilyn. You helped us raise over $300! The money we raised from the DVD sales will go to our annual golf tournament benefiting Children’s Miracle Network.

We still about 15 DVD’s left- so if you want one- get yours now before there gone. Once there gone- there gone!

Walmart CultureWalmart CultureWalmart CultureWalmart Culture When I think of Walmart Culture, I think of Don Soderquist. He was known as the “Gatekeeper of Culture”. Don joined Walmart in 1980- he served as our Executive Vice President, Vice Chairman, Chief Operating Officer, and finally our Senior Vice Chairman. From Don Soderguist’s book: “The Wal-Mart Way”: “To build a great company, you must create a culture where everyone shares the same values, purposes, and expectations of success. What is culture? Culture is the personality of an organization. Therefore, culture governs much of how people think, act, interact with others, and do their work. It is extremely powerful in determining the present and continuing success and the future direction of any organization. Culture can literally determine whether a company has a future. Attitude is a huge component of culture, as well as the dynamic for creating and maintaining culture. The attitudes leaders have affect the way they do their jobs and the way they treat their people, and they will ultimately impact the success of their organization. Your people are watching you every day, developing perceptions of themselves, of the organization, and of you as a leader all on the basis of your attitude. By your attitude and actions you can inspire your people to think positively and confidently as they set out to solve problems, knowing they can do it. The following core values have guided Wal-Mart Associates over the years and are woven into the very fabric of our culture.

☺ Integrity ☺ Respect ☺ Teamwork ☺ Communication ☺ Excellence ☺ Accountability ☺ Trust. As Leaders we can never lose sight of the vision or let our values deteriorate as individuals or as a company. We should be grateful to be a part of something special and it is our duty to keep the culture alive and never lose sight of.”

Are you tired of being tired? Tired of being called “Big Boned”? Tired of having that spare tire around your middle instead of in your car? I’m sure you’ve noticed all the healthy living and weight management features we have around the store, and all the commercials on TV. Well, there’s a greater purpose to all of this, not only does Walmart want it’s customers to develop a more healthy life style, they also want to help and encourage our associates to develop a more healthier lifestyle as well. In partnering with Walmart’s Personal Sustainability Project- General Mills and NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” have come up with the “Pound for Pound Challenge”. For every pound you lose, Pound For Pound will donate 10¢ to Feeding America™ - enough to provide one pound of groceries to a local food bank.

Join me in making myself healthier, and yourself too! What do you have to lose, besides a few pounds? I will share my progress and probably some set backs over the next few months. My goal is to lose 50 lbs. I feel this is a great time to do this, not only for myself, but because I will also be helping others when I lose.

Sign up at:

www.walmartbenefits.com Click on the “Pound for Pound Challenge” icon. Pledge the amount of weight you plan to lose between now and April. Once there, you will find tools to help you achieve your goals including healthy recipes, tips from NBC’s “The Biggest Loser”, and more. Hope to be seeing less of you!

Martin Luther King, Jr.Martin Luther King, Jr.Martin Luther King, Jr.Martin Luther King, Jr.

Our nation has made great changes over the past forty years. I wasn’t alive during the Civil Rights movements of the 1950’s and 1960’s- but in my opinion, Dr. King is one of the greatest Americans our country has ever had. His fight wasn’t only a “black and white” issue- it was a fight to unite all people. He risked everything- the safety of his family, his freedom, and ultimately his life so that all Americans could live together no matter what the color of your skin was, what your Religious beliefs were, your nationality, your sexuality, or what your personal background was.

What would Dr. King think of our country’s progress today? We are now a nation of one, and almost 45 years after his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, our country has elected our first African-American President.

I think Dr. King would be happy and smile.

Please take a few moments to remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I know I will.

Contrary to Popular Belief: Collecting pull tabs from soda cans does not benefit the National Kidney Foundation. This is an urban legend that has bugged them for years. The NKF states that they never had such a program- and don’t redeem pull tabs for any services they provide. Don’t believe me? Call them up and ask. It takes about 100 tabs to equal 3¢ worth of aluminum.
