In Memory…In Memory…In Memory…In Memory…

Howard “Red” Rohrssen

1923 - 2008

Our store suffered a major tragedy this past week. By now I’m sure everyone has heard what happened. We would like to take a moment to recognize all the associates that went way beyond the call of duty when faced with a tense situation that day- to the associates that responded quickly- to the associates that performed CPR- to all the associates that helped that day: Thank you. Although Red technically wasn’t a Walmart associate- everyone considered him part of our extended Walmart family. He did a great job maintaining our parking lot and contributed a lot to our store. He was an excellent worker and very conscientious when it came to recycling equipment and store fixtures. He was instrumental in our store’s recycling program- he would save anything recyclable from our trash- load up his truck, and take it to the Recycling Center. He would donate all the he received from recycling our fixtures to our store’s Children’s Miracle Network fund. Red was a very respectful man and refused to be addressed as “Sir”, as he felt he was a hard worker and was proud of that. He enjoyed the associates here, never had an unkind word for anyone, and seemed to be a happy and fulfilled individual.

Remembering Red… Remembering Red… Remembering Red… Remembering Red…

Red-

Made walking canes from the branches of palm trees. He had a tree in his yard that he selected just the right branch from- he cut the branch off, shaped it down to the size of the cane, cleaned up the rough edges, stained and finished. They were very unique because they were speckled with little stubs all the way up and down the shaft. He made them for those who needed them.

Red-

Took all of our scrap metal to the recycling center for CMN money. I remember him always being a step ahead of me to ask if he could take something to the dump before I would ever even mention it to him.

Red-

Came to us over four years ago when Mike of Natures Way Landscaping and I sat down and decided we needed someone here to pick up the trash throughout the day. Mike said he had the perfect guy that was dependable and honest. Did he ever.

Red-

Worked hard and was really nice to others. Because of that he was a happy person and made others happy as well. It didn’t matter what his job was in life, even picking up the trash.

Laronna started her Walmart career over 21 years ago at our original Manatee Avenue location. She was one of the very first associates to be hired at our store. While in High School, Laronna worked at McDonald’s, but she considers Walmart the one and only real job she’s ever had. She came to Walmart because, well frankly she needed a job. She never intended on making Walmart a life long career- but after 21 years- she doesn’t plan on leaving anytime soon. Laronna worked as a cashier for about 10 years. After the move to our store’s current location- she became a CSM. She was a Comp Shopper for a while before going to the Sporting Goods Department in 1998 as a Sales Associate.

In 2006- Laronna was promoted to her current position of Sporting Goods Department Manager. Laronna has been married for 14 years and has three daughters- Neshia, Breyawna, Tomiya and one son T.J. Outside of work- Laronna likes to shop, and listen to music. She is also the Team Mom for the Palmetto Trojans- a football team that her son plays on. Laronna says she is happy with Walmart and hopes to make it to her 30th year Anniversary. She plans on one day maybe moving up with the company, but is happy with where she is now. She would like to quote something her grandmother always told her: “Treat others the way you would like to be treated.”

FUN FACT: Take a one dollar bill and look really close at the top right hand corner on the front. On the top left corner of the “crest” surrounding the number one, you will see a very tiny owl. There are many more hidden images on the one dollar bill- see how many you can find. (Hint: There are two spiders on the front as well)

FUN FACT: When launched in 1886- Coca-Cola was sold in pharmacies as a nerve tonic used to cure headaches. It’s two main “headache curing” ingredients were cocaine from Coca leaves, and ground Kola/Cola beans. Hence “Coca-Cola”. Until 1904- each 8 oz bottle of Coca-Cola contained 9 mg of cocaine. Today Coca-Cola uses coca leaves from Peru that have been treated to remove all traces of cocaine.
