Principals Report

Dear School Community,

The middle section of Term 3 is business as usual and a time to shine for our students.

During this fortnight our Year 12 students are sitting their Trial HSC exams, many of our students will participate in the annual

Ronny Gibbs netball and rugby league carnival, we will remember Shelley Lane with her family and friends, the HSC Dance

class tackle their Practical HSC Performances and we wind up with the Mid-Term break.

An exciting and busy time for all.

Our staff ‘Improving for Student Learning’

A major facet of effective education is our ability to look at areas for improvement.

For students, this comes in the form of formative and summative assessment- where we look at their progress in class for learn-

ing and assess the learning at the end of a topic. This information can then be used to provide feedback and help our students

grow.

For staff this is also a process we undergo each year. All staff in the Department of Education take on their own Performance &

Development plan, focusing on areas they wish to improve in or develop greater skill.

As a part of this process all teachers have their lessons observed at times by a peer and their supervisors. Over the next few

weeks myself and Mrs Bush are extending this by observing every teacher in one of their lessons. We are all professionally

responsible for helping our students grow and my commitment is to lead a school focussed on student improvement.

HANDS OFF!!!

It always disappoints me to write a negative piece in the newsletter, however, during 2018 there has been an increase in muck-

ing around physically in our school. This is most prominent among our younger boys in the school but also extends to some

older boys and rarely girls. This is a common thing for teenagers and can be easily managed most times.

Unfortunately, many boys taking part have shown little regard for being constantly told to stop and in quite a few cases this has

escalated to pushing and shoving or a fight. We have now had a teacher struck in the face, accidentally, during one of these

instances.

My message is simple:

Keep your hands to yourself and follow what our teachers say. Enough is enough of this immature behaviour and some

of our young men accepting no responsibility.

If students are unable to manage their own behaviour, as young adults should be, we will manage it for them. Students

may be suspended for physical violence or aggressive behaviour, if required in these instances.

Parents of our young men, please remind your child of the behaviour expectations at school. Everyone deserves to feel

safe and secure, including our staff.

P&C News

I wish to thank Bec Smith, Sonia Black, Lorraine and Matthew Wales and Tanya Buchanan for manning the gates for the Nyn-

gan Tigers last home game for the season.

I would like to make a special mention to Miss Gracie Griffiths for always helping Aunty (Neralie) man the footy gate.

Gracie assisted me many times and when Mrs Buchanan was helping us Gracie was also lucky enough to receive maths lessons

from her. Thank you Gracie, you are a star!

Sincere thanks to all parents, carers and students who have all volunteered their time to help with the fundraising duties to date.

The next few months will be a bit quieter in regards to fundraising -probably a couple of raffles and Jenny Lane doing foyer

nights at the Nyngan RSL Club – thanks Jen.

A big thank you to: Michelle Blake – Vice President, Tanya Buchanan – Secretary, Noelene Walsh – Treasurer, parents who

regularly attend our meetings and Mr Gibson and Mrs Bush for all your ongoing support, it certainly makes my role easier.

Our next meeting is Monday 10 September at 5:45 pm in the staff room. I hope to see many new faces there.

Deputy Principal Report

Term 3 is a very busy time for our staff and students. Winter has taken its toll and so has the travel to sporting events each

weekend. We have noticed this at Nyngan High this week with a few silly behaviours creeping in. Our Positive Education mes-

sage this week talks about change, and this is a great time to think about change.

I challenge all students to think about what changes they can make. They might make minor changes to effort or major changes

to attitude and behaviour. If we all reflect on our need to improve, as a whole we can make a change. What changes will you

make this week to ensure Nyngan High School is an even better place to be?

This week I have started completing lesson observations with staff at Nyngan High School with the assistance of Mr Gibson.

Together we are observing the practices of our teaching staff and providing individual constructive feedback on how to make

good practice better. I have already observed some excellent teaching, as well as having had the pleasure to see engaged and

interested students. I love being in the classroom and have also been observed myself so I can continue to improve and grow as

both a teacher and a leader. This is a fabulous process that ensures we are striving for high expectations at Nyngan High School

each day.

When students are sent to me for various reasons I have one philosophy that rings true over all others and students who have

spent time with me will know this mantra very well. We all make mistakes…every single one of us. Sometimes these are big

mistakes and sometimes they are small, but no matter what the mistake, we need to accept it and own it. From this place of

ownership and acknowledgement we can move forward and start to learn from these mistakes.

Maths/CAPA

Stage 4 Mathematics have been studying the visual, creative and interactive unit “Transformations”. Students have drawn, de-

signed and created their own transformations on pen and paper and utilised computer drawing programs to re-create patterns

using combinations of flips, slides and turns. Finding the amount of transformations which exist in our everyday world has

been an eye opener for all. Following in this newsletter are photos of 4E students creating the transformations on computer

drawing programs.

Year 12 have completed their General 2 and Mathematics papers today, the aural Music exam is on Friday, Dance on 20/8/18,

Visual Arts 21/8/18 and Music performance is on Thursday 23/8/18. After staff have marked this work, students will be provid-

ed with valuable feedback concerning areas of improvement. Zoe and Jed completed their final assessment task for Mr Mathe-

son and performed admirably. Well done guys!

Year 11 are working towards the Preliminary Examinations which will be held at the end of this term.

Stage 5 Mathematics are working on Proportion, Statistics and Indices. It was great walking into Mr Lennon’s 5A class recent-

ly to see them entering the data they had collected into spreadsheets with ease!

On Tuesday HSC markers were in the school to assess Alahna, Brittany, Petria and Lucy for their core performance, core com-

position and major performance. The girls (and Miss Stafford) were very relaxed but are happy it is now all over. Thank you to

Miss Stafford and Mrs Robb for the time, effort and patience you have provided our Dance students.

Lastly, the Maths/CAPA faculty would like to wish all the boys and girls involved in semi-finals this weekend the very best of

luck. Try hard, do your best and believe in yourselves. You can do just about anything you put your minds to. Remember that!

With trial HSC exams in full swing, we in the business of readin’ and writin’ thought it an opportune time to suggest a few tips

for maximising marks via good study patterns. So here’s a guide on achieving your best academically; preparing yourself for

exams and whether we like them or hate them, they are important.

Have a study schedule - make a fortnightly study schedule and stick to it. Include all your other commitments, sport,

work, social commitments etc.

Break. Do not study for more than an hour at a time. Get a drink, go for a wander for 5 then get back to it.

Get rid of your phone while you study. Whatever is happening on there is not half as important as hitting the books.

Snapchat will always be around, the chance at academic success will not be.

Headphones with music are not good when reading or writing. How can you formulate your own ideas when you are

listening to someone else’s?

Work out how you learn/memorise best. Is it visual? Make posters. Is it listening? Record your notes. Is it writing? Keep

writing.

Remember, it’s not meant to be easy, otherwise everyone would be doing it. Committing to study is hard but rewarding.

Resilience is the key.

Science/Special Education faculty report

Last week, students of the Nyngan High School STEAM class travelled to Sydney to attend the 2018 Sydney Science Festival.

During the festival we visited several iconic attractions including the Australian Museum, Powerhouse Museum, The Sydney

Observatory, Taronga Zoo and Western Sydney University. Some highlights of the trip included:

The expanse of Zoology at the Australian Museum

Comprehending the overwhelming scale of the universe

Observing Jupiter’s moons through a 150 year old telescope

Interacting with a virtual world at Western Sydney University

Reviewing products designed by future innovators at Western Sydney University

Tinkering with the Experimentations exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum

TAS / PDHPE Faculty News

Congratulations to the students who are part of the cattle and sheep teams. Meeting in the mornings at 7am until 8am is a big

ask especially when it is cold.

The sheep team head to Dubbo in Week 6 to compete in the Schools Merino Wethers competition and we are again grateful for

the support and expertise given from Bomber and Scott Macmillan from Mullengudgery Station, Nyngan.

In September SALT will be visiting Nyngan again. They have such a great time so are keen to return.

They are a group of four tradeswomen who help our Stage 5 girls see the possibility of a career in a

trade. I have 20 keen girls and Mr Webb is also looking forward to the day.

Next week a number of students from the Primary Industries class head to Dubbo to complete the

TAFE motorbikes course which we have been lucky enough to have received a funding grant for.

A reminder to use or at least look at the CAREERS section of our school website. It is an awesome

area to spend time looking through. You can even send me an email from it.

In Stage 4 PE students have begun their Survivor unit which will 'test' their strategies in regards to new unfamiliar situations,

building relationships, communication and resilience. Screening has begun this week in class so it will be interesting to see

who progresses to the next round.

During Year 11 CAFS students have been collating the survey results on the use of technology & the impact it may be having

on physical activity. Students will then analyse these results and identify any trends or interesting developments. Thank you to

anyone who completed the survey for the students.

Congratulations to Jed Hoare who has completed and submitted his major work for Industrial Technology. I am impressed and

a big thank you to Mr Webb for all his support.

Congratulations to Miss Stafford and Mrs Robb for all their support of the Dance students who completed their major practical

yesterday for HSC markers.

Next week Mrs Orchard and the hospitality students will be once again catering for the Bogan Shire Council members. This is

a great opportunity for them and one they relish the chance to be involved.

Congratulations to our Year 12 students for completing their Trial exams this week and next week. These exams are very im-

portant and thank you to the staff who have been offering extra assistance.

SRC Report

The SRC have been very active in the first weeks of Term 3. Nyngan High School’s student leaders have been active in the

community, participating in National Tree Day and resuming visits to the Mick Glennie aged care facility at the hospital. Sen-

ior SRC members have also been establishing a greater presence in school decision making forums, with delegates discussing

issues with Mr Gibson and the P & C.

National Tree Day

Friday 27th July was National Tree Day, a yearly event established in 1996

by Planet Ark and Olivia Newton-John. Across Australia, about 300,000

people volunteer to get back to nature and give back to their communities

by planting trees. This year, Nyngan High School student leaders joined

groups from Nyngan Public School and Saint Joseph’s Primary School on a

beautiful sunny afternoon to plant over 100 trees along the highway at the

west end of town. Our students proved to have green thumbs and a no fuss

attitude, planting their allotment of trees in no time at all. The SRC would

like to thank everyone at the Shire Council for inviting us to participate in

this very worthwhile event.

Mick Glennie Visits

Members of the SRC have been making weekly visits to Mick Glennie Aged Care Facility this term. Each week, four student

leaders and Mr Partridge visit the residents for conversation and other activities. They all had a dance to some classic songs,

new and old. Everybody had a go, grooving and shaking to a bit of Elvis Presley and Neil Diamond among others. The students

enjoy interacting with the residents, who light up at their arrival every week. Our participating student leaders should be proud

of the difference they are making in their community.

Open Girls League Tag Gala Day- Coonabarabran

Nyngan High School took a red hot League Tag team to Coonabarabran and the girls certainly came out on fire and proved

they were a force to be reckoned with. We had a few new faces in the team and some who had not played League Tag before

and I was impressed with the sportsmanship and encouragement all girls showed to each other.

Due to a limited amount of schools nominating for the gala day, we had to split into two teams and play 7 a side with the prize

of fun at the end of the day. Nyngan High School were now Nyngan Black Team and Orange Team. Both the teams took on

Trangie and Dunedoo and dominated the games.

We had some brilliant performances around the ruck with Bailee Griffiths and little pocket rocket Abbie Smith controlling their

teams dominance respectively. New girls Piper Ashton and Anastasia Walsh did not disappoint. Their effort and determination

is to be commended with Piper scoring a couple and Anastasia unfortunately falling short of the try line with an ankle injury,

but to us you got that try girl!

When it was time to play on the full field the magic truly begun with girls doing some tremendous and skilful tagging, along

with red hot set plays. Katie Boland was strong with the boot converting some amazing and difficult kicks. The sportsmanship

and positive attitude the girls showed on the day is truly admirable and was noticed by officials and other schools. The girls are

a credit to Nyngan High School and represented with pride.

It was a fun day all round, however it would not have been possible without the assistance of Laura Boland and Donna Smith

who gave up their time to drive the girls to Coonabarabran- THANK YOU! The dedication and support of our parents is great-

ly appreciated and is what makes our school great.
