Larry aud John O'XTeii of Aliona, were arretted in this village last ifoud.ty after- noon for drunken and disorderly conduct and jailed. They made a desperate resist- a-ice to the last, one of them striking a murderous blow with a loaded whip stock a- policeman Wool's bead, with both hands, while he was struggling single- handed with the other brother—a blow which would probably have been fata' but for the good strong helmet from which it wis swerved, striking the shoulder ucav- i y. After getting them inside the jail one of thi-rn struck Sheriff White a desperate blow but they were finally overpowered and locked up iu cells. The next grand jury will attend to their case, and lull punishment will no doubt be metid out to them for the serious crime Of resisting < flicers of the law. This is the htrdest trial that our new police have yet been subjected to and they discharged their d-ities nobly, policeman Wool bear- ing the first brunt of battle against these notoriously desperate characters like a vettran. Pittsburgh made no mistake when it uniformed'ils police force and paid them a regular satary. The town hag been remarkably quiet since the change was made, and it will doubtless continue 80. The two O'Seils were taken out of jail on Wednesday, handcuffed, for examina- tion before Justice Gilliland, when they waived examination and were held to await the action of the next grand jury, their bait being fixed at §1,003 each, for each of the three offences, Larry being charged with assault in* the first degree and Xobn with asvault in the second de- gree. As for the dark genttemen the game on their part was in the first half rather an experiment; the players with but few exceptions hold- ing new positions, Eggleston and Gee being the battery as usual, Epps on first, Paige second and Dibney third, H.ickett short and Gordon, Slorton and Dorsey be- ing the out-field. This spring the salmon were so thick on the river above "The Dalles" that they stopped the progress of the steamboat. "But do you believe it?" asks one of our party. "Why certainly, the gentleman told me so," And are we going there? "Well—not this time." "The Dalles" is the most dead place we have yet seen at the west. With a population of about 3000 at the head of deep water navigation on the Columbia, and with the dalles of the Columbia only 4 miles distant, where the river rushes through a narrow gonre 130 feet wide at the rate of a mile a minute, still it does not boom. The best feature above "The Dalles" is its water supply, which is furn- ished by "Mill Creek,"aplriamthatcomes from the snow-clad sides of Mt. Hood only 30 miles distant. l a g o i n g d o w n tbe river you leave abOllt 7 iD tllC morning. Voulandatthe "Upper Cascades" and are transported by a uar- row gauge railroad around the rapids to the "Lower Cascades." where you again take the steamer. There is an old block house at the "Upper Cascades" which covers the wooded height and overlooks a long sweep of the majestic river. The river here thunders over the rocks, the same as it has since the days when ac- cording to Indian tradition the mountains fell and blocked its course and made these cascades. The country between the up- per and lower cascades was the battle ground of a fierce fight with the Indians. It was here that General Sheridan then only a Lieutenaut made his first fiu-ht March 20th 1S56. Old chief Chenowlth and eight other chiefs were captured and hanged ou a tree which still remains standing at the foot of the mountain, not far from the whaif boat. About 20 miles below "The Dalles" is Mernaloose Island "the isle of the dead" ou which there is an Indian burying ground. Vic Trevitt one of the earliest explorers Of this region is buried o n t h e extreme point and his monument is visible for many miles in both directions. His dyiug request was to be buried on this island, the scene of some of his early adventures, and so when he died in San Francisco the masonic fraternity brought his remains here and erected this monument to his memory. Vancouver, Oregon, is about 13 miles from Portland by water, and has about 4500 inhabitants. It is a United States military post. Its streets are broad and clean and it has a very thrifty appearance from the water. Looking up the river from in front of Vancouver, Mounts Hooi and Jefferson are seen in all their grand- eur and beautv, snow-capped and cloud- wreathed. The steamer readies Portland about 5 in the afternoon, and so ends our excursiou on the Columbia River one long to be remembered as "A. perpetual feast of nectared sweets Wuere no crude surfeit reigns." H. W. Tacoma, Washington, July 31,1890. Cyclone ou the St. Lawrence. A great cyclone swept over Lake St. Louis on the St. Lawrence River on the evening of August 5th. Many buildings were unroofed and demolished at Valois, Point Claire, Stami3 and Dorvale, aud great damage was done to crops. At Isle Catlieux Lake a race by the Canoe Asso- ciation encamped there was in progress, and all the competing yachts, eight in number were swamped. At Lachine the damage was heaviest. The great building of the Dominion Bridge Co. and the large factories of the Canadian Screw and Barb- ed Wire factories were unroofed and left in ruins. The contests of the day took place in Howard Park the first being the ItASD ENGISE TJRIAL. We are happy to say that the number purpos- ing to take this splendid excursiou is steadily growing. One of the many im- portant things about it is that it gives ample time to visit the many points of in- terest not only within the quaint old city but round about it. A four days excurs- ion out for the small sum for the round trip is an opportunity that has never be- fore been presented to the people of Clin- ton county and vicinity. T h e river he re thunders over the rocks , the same as it has since the days when acco rd ing to Indian tradit ion the mounta ins fell and blocked i ts course and made these cascades . The c o u n t r y between the upper and lower cascades was the battle g round of a fierce fight wi th the Ind i ans . I t was here that General Sheridan then only a L ieu tenau t m a d e his first fiu-ht March 20th 1S56. Old chief Chenowlth and eight o ther chiefs were captured and hanged ou a t ree which still remains s tanding a t the foot of the mounta in , not far from the wha i f boat. His dyiug reques t was to be buried on this island, the scene of some of his early adventures , and so when he died in San Franc isco the masonic fraternity b rought his remains here and erected this m o n u m e n t to his memory .

Vancouver , Oregon, is about 13 miles from Por t l and by water, and has about 4500 inhabi tants . I t is a United States military post. I t s streets are broad and clean and i t has a very thrifty appearance from the water . Look ing up the river from in front of Vancouver , Mounts H o o i and Jefferson are seen in all their grandeur and beautv, snow-capped and cloud-wreathed.
