Centre half A ntbony Mijoc launches an attack during the Bill Turner Cup game

1992 Season Review The 1992 soccer season was approached with the primary objective of consolidation. Our re-entry into the ACT Soccer Federation's junior competition the previous season had provided a conclusive guide to our ability levels and it was resolved not to enter any Division 1 teams for the 1992 season but rather to build on the confidence and strengths of our Age 11 and 12 teams with a view to them gaining entry into Division 1, on merit, at a later date.

The soccer committee was further influenced in this decision by the early season's registrations which confirmed that the many Marist boys playing soccer for district dubs had not been persuaded to play in the school teams. Whilst this is an ongoing disappointment for the many parents who coach, manage and administer soccer at Marist, the committee hold the view that this situation is likely to continue until the level of competition, coaching and school support is such that there will be a natural genuine desire and commitment to the school teams by all boys regardless of their ability level or the football code they choose to play.

In order to address this problem several initiatives were undertaken during the season

174

a) A four-day coaching clinic was conducted during the Easter break with over 50 boys, mainly in the 10-12 age groups taking part

b) Five coaches attended and passed a two-day Level 1 ASF coaching course.

c) An active pre-season training and match prcwam for the two school representative teams was undertaken to ensure a proper state of preparedness for these teams.

d) The soccer committee supported a proposal for 'school tour guidelines' which included a requirement that any boy wishing to travel away on a football tour must have played the two previous seasons in a school team.

e) Playing two representative fixtures on the main playing field during lunch recess.

Representative Teams After the school's two representative teams in the Commonwealth Bank Bill Turner Cup (age under 16) and Combined Catholic Colleges' Cup (Senior) were eliminated in the first round last year plans were formulated to ensure a more thorough preparation for our efforts in 1992

First XI 1992 saw the inclusion of many younger players in our First XI. Led by captain/goalkeeper Ben Luther it was a year of improvement and development in both skills and team play. The Marist First XI developed a skilled and flowing style of attacking soccer characterised by strong and creative midfield play that was exciting and interesting to watch.

The best and fairest award went to Scott Conlon for his great contribution to the team as a talented midfield player, motivator and 'team' player. The coach's award went to Adrian Paragalli, a strong, competitive and aggressive Year 9 student, for his contributions in the fullback position and to the team in general.

ASC Competition The determination and continual development of skills and team play saw some excellent results in the latter part of the ASC competition for our First X1 Coming off a crushing 11-1 victory over St Patrick's, Marist full of school pride, was ready to meet St Edmund's our traditional rivals. Such games are renowned for producing some of the best soccer of the season This, our final game in the ASC calendar, was no exception It produced an outstanding display of highly skilled, team soccer played at a lightning pace for the full ninety minutes.

Marist's superior midfield play, controlled by Scott Conlon, George Oaveria, Paul Flack and Nick Richter, provided us with several genuine scoring opportunities. Although we did not score ourselves our strong back line headed by Mario Spralja as sweeper, Adrian Paragalli, Nick West and Luke Risson as fullbacks and Ben Luther our captain in goal, ensured that St Edmund's attacks would never amount to a goal and a 0-0 draw was the result

This was undoubtedly the best full game of soccer that the team had put together and not only denied St Edmund's the ASC Premiership but also produced an

uncharacteristic speech from the referee. In this, he congratulated both teams on what he saw as clearly the best schoolboys soccer match that he had witnessed in his many years of refereeing. This acknowledgement was great reward for Marist's determination, improvement as a team and sportsmanship throughout the season

The ASC competition provided a solid base for our launch into the Annual Combined Catholic Colleges' knockout competition. With our development throughout the season the team was capable of progressing a long way this year. Nick Richter and Brendan Watson represented Marist in the ASC combined team at the end of the season

Combined Catholic Colleges' Cup There was little argument that Marist's recent representative teams in this competition had significant potential to proceed beyond the Southern Zone final. In recent years Marist's team bristled with ACT representative players and several with NSW state Youth League experience. Despite this talent our best showing had been an elimination in the Southern Zone final in 1990. Last year saw a first round elimination by St Edmunds.

Training time in 1992 was at a premium and coach George Oaveria Snr was given the task of selecting and moulding a team from several trial matches. The team's first encounter was against the Southern Cross Youth team, at that time undefeated. The final 0-3 scoreline underlined the need for further evaluation.

The newly formed ACT Soccer Academy squad, selected from the cream of Canberra's youth talent was to be our next encounter. The ACT squad looked daunting and although they had not played as a team they certainly had the benefit of a lengthy training and fitness program. The Marist squad had been further strengthened with the inclusion of several key players including

Chris Tsaousidis and Robert Gadzic who had been unavailable for the Southern Cross match. Three Marist boys, Scott Conlon, Brad Nagy and George Oaveria were Academy squad members but were to play for Marist in this encounter.

It was apparent from the opening whistle that the eleven Marist players were about to demonstrate that they all deserved a place in the Academy squad The frenetic pace and stunning penetration of the Marist attacks completely set the Academy on the back foot Robert Gadzic was dominant and dynamic in this opening phase and scored the opening goal after the Academy defence failed to dear the initial Marist sortie into their six yard box. Before fifteen minutes was up, Gadzic was again on target, this time from a Marist corner, whipping a header past the Academy keeper.

This second goal for Marist was the inspiration to press on, just when it was expected their fitness level would be severely tested.

The second half continued in similar vein, with few clear chances and the midfields and defence dominating play. For Marist, Martin Lategui, Luca Di Zillo and Scott Conlon were matching the midfield skills of the Academy players. It was again Gadzic who finished off a good Marist attack, mid way through the final stanza, to put the result beyond doubt and top up the adrenalin tank for his Marist teammates. A Marist hand ball in the Academy penalty box allowed the ACT team to pull one back in the dosing minutes for a final 3-1 stunning scoreline to Marist

Our opening match in the Combined Catholic Colleges' Cup (CCCC) was delayed several weeks but finally Holy Spirit Wollongong emerged from a washed out south coast as our opposition

Marist were without Robert Gadzic who had been lost for the season with a damaged knee and Martin Lategui, recovering from a dislocated hip. Marist's powerful midfield and stout defence held the visitors to 0-0 at half time. The second half opened with more enterprise and Luca Di Zillo set Marist on their winning way with a deft, sharply angled goal from the left flank early in the second half. The result was sealed seven minutes later when Chris Tsaousidis challenged strongly from a Marist corner for Ante Subasic to head home the crumbs and put the result beyond doubt. Matt McCann was outstanding in goal for Marist, his efforts including a saved penalty. Mario Spralja captained the side and controlled the defence well. Marist were now to meet St Edmunds, 1-0 winners over Edmund Rice College Wollongong, in the Southern Zone Final

St Edmund's went into this game as warm favourites. As the intensity of the battle warmed yellow cards were shown to several players from both teams. However the half time 0-0 scoreline was a fair indication of the balance of play with neither team having any clear chances. On the resumption of play Marist started to assert some superiority and in the seventh minute the fresh legs of replacement Marist striker Antonio Marques made a strong run into the penalty box, holding off his marker to shoot low and hard past the St Edmunds' keeper.

Full time brought relief and the chance to go on in the competition The Southern Zone win was our best ever effort by a senior team and there was now an air of expectation that the team could proceed further. The quarter finals, comprising NSW zone winners from four

176

Country and four Sydney teams were set for the final week in July.

Visiting private school team Barker College provided a further opportunity for our boys to tune their game during the mid semester break Barker had something of a reputation with an undefeated record for the season in Sydney including wins over some highly fancied GPS schools. Our growing team confidence was evident in this game and the skilled ball players worked some magic through the Barker College defence to dent their record with a convincing 3-1 result.

The CCCC competition resumed immediately in the new semester with St Mary's Cathedral Christian Brothers College travelling to Canberra for the quarter final encounter.

The No 1 playing field at the school (still set up from the previous days BTC match against Delroy) was again the nominated venue for the lunchtime encounter and a large crowd was on hand to see the well oiled Marist unit in action. Marist applied all the early pressure with Brendan Watson using his speed down the right flank to telling advantage. The midfield began to fire with Scott Conlon, George Claveria and Martin Lategui prominent. The breakthrough came in the 17th minute after Marist won a corner. Luca Di Zillo launched himself at the ensuing cross and the result was a dazzling airborne header into the net which bought the home crowd to their feet as one. St Mary's applied constant pressure for the remainder of the half but our defence, with Ante Subasic and Mario Spralja to the fore soaked up all that was offered. The second half was more of the same with Marist holding out for victory.

We were now into the final four in the NSW statewide competition, a superb effort and underlining again the old adage that a 'star team is more effective than a team of stars'. Our semi-final encounter was to be against Patrician Brothers, Fairfield (Sydney). There was little doubt that the opposition would be difficult. Two National Soccer League teams draw their support from the immediate vicinity of the Patrician Brothers school and the school was a recognised nursery of soccer talent.

There were few arguments with the 0-1 final scoreline. It ended the excellent effort of the team in progressing to the semi finals.

Marist's senior representative team was: George Claveria, Scott Conlon, Luca Di Zillo, Paul Flack, john Glavinic, Martin Lategui, Antonio Marques, Matt McCann, Brad Nagy, Marlo Spralja (Captain), Ante Subasic, Chris Tsaousidis, Brendan Watson. George Claveria (Coach) Steve Watson (Manager).

Second XI wins ASC premiership 1992 was an outstanding year for the Marist second XI team Suffering only one loss throughout the season (0-1 to St Edmund's) we were well deserving of our place in the grand final and billing as favourites having beaten St Edmund's our finals opponent 1-0 just two weeks previously.

At 2-2 at the end of full time in the final it took until extra time for Matthew Edwards our main striker to score the winning goals for a well deserved 4-2 victory. A premiership win was the fitting reward for the whole team's committed approach and determined effort to perform at their best as a team.

Daniel Webb was solid as sweeper all season and captained the side. Mark Jones provided great speed and strength on the left wing and shared the best and fairest award with Matt Edwards who scored twenty-five goals during the season. The coach's award went to Attila Ovari our centre full back for his determined "never say die" attitude and great improvement over the season

Commonwealth Bank Bill Turner Cup

Pre-season training commenced in March and two trial games were played against the ACT Under 14 and Under 15 squads at the Australian Institute of Sport Both games resulted in narrow losses by Marist but indicated that our team had sufficient skill and potential to be a real force in the competition Coach Wally Conlon set about moulding the squad into a competitive unit for their first round encounter against Kambah High in early May.

The subsequent emphatic 9-0 result sent out a warning to the remaining district schools that Marist were in for the long haul After a cautious start by both teams, Dimitrie Kourtis, opened the scoring with a composed side foot into the open goal after Kambah failed to clear a Marist attack. Just four minutes later centre half Anthony Mijoc launched a curling volley into the top left hand corner of the Kambah goal from 25 metres out that drew admiration from the sideline supporters. As the half time break drew near, striker Dion Cannell who had threatened on a number of occasions brought up Marist's third goal to take them into the break 3-0. Cannell, David Geremia, Justin Webb and a further two from Mijoc interspersed by a goal from sweeper Ivor Rakic saw the Marist total racing towards the final score of 9-0.

Our next match against Canberra High (BTC winners in 1985) was played a fortnight later with the chill winds of winter and lashing sleet an additional contestant. Marist midfield struggled to come to grips with the slippery conditions and the wet ball was a constant challenge to the skills of both teams.

With the halftime score locked at 0-0 the opening goal was going to play an important part in deciding the outcome of the match.

Centre half Anthony Mijoc was everywhere during the opening second half phase as Mari st !if ted their effort and were finally rewarded with a well constructed goal finished by Andrew Pulsford in the 37th minute. Canberra High immediately turned to regain the initiative and were only stopped by a brilliant full horizontal save from Marist keeper Steve Wilkinson Four minutes later Canberra High were again picking the ball out of their goal after a powerful drive from Dion Cannell

An immediate goal in reply from Canberra High seemed to lift the somewhat listless Marist effort and some excellent play followed. Dimitrie Kourtis, more cool than the weather, slotted away an excellent volley and goals from Mijoc and Cannell followed for the final scoreline of 5-1

In mid June Marist moved decisively into the ACT & NSW surrounds area final with a 6-0 (2-0 half time) win over Queanbeyan High. Goals for Marist came from Dimitrie Kourtis ( 4) and Dion Cannell (2).

Dion Ca.nnell, Marist's 'star player of the match drives the ball doum field in the Bill Turner Cup pre-quarter final against Delray High, Dubl:xJ.

Marist had now an aggregate goal total of 20-1 and was showing sufficient promise to have drawn independent observers to comment that the team had the ability to proceed through to the interstate finals in this prestigious tournament. Our opponent was Mulwarree High (Goulburn) with the match set down at the Wanniassa enclosed ground. Mulwarree gained their finals berth by defeating Belconnen High 2-1 in the other semi final.

Marist's bid for honours had Mulwarree on the back foot from the opening whistle. A Mulwarree hand ball under pressure in the opening minutes provided Dion Cannell with a penalty chance which he clinically put away. Within minutes Marist launched another attack. Duncan Marchant played the ball wide to the right where Steven Magro powered past the Mulwarree defence cut along the bye line and blasted a goal from an almost impossible angle. Marist dominated and dazzled the opposition for the remainder of the match. Magro added another to his tally with Anthony Mijoc providing the final goal for Marist to run out decisive 4-0 winners and secure the area final of the Commonwealth Bank Bill Turner Cup for the first time.

Marist was now through to the final round of 16 teams from the original 500 school teams entered from throughout New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria Our pre-quarter final opponent was Delroy High, the Western NSW Area winners who hailed from Dubbo. Delroy was a ccreducational school with a total student population of 600 and they had the added burden of travelling to Canberra

Our anticipation of a strong showing against Delroy was heightened by some excellent preparatory games against the ACT representative teams. A 2-0 win over the

Under 14s was followed by a 3-2 loss to the very slick Under 15 squad after we had led them 1-0 and later 2-1.

Preparations for a gala day were planned with a long list of official guests from the media and ACT soccer community. Approval had been granted for the match to be played, a first for soccer, on the main school sports field during the lunch recess.

We were gracious hosts, the Commonwealth Bank prominent sponsors and the ACT Soccer Federation's President a welcome special guest. All that remained was to kill the fattened lamb!

Alas the plot went out the door when the game commenced To quote the Canberra Times "And while playing the match on the No 1 rugby oval at the college was considered a breakthrough for the code, the sparse grass cover and uneven surface better suited the Delroy long-ball specialists."

Marist launched attack after attack but the ball would not go in the goal. Finally, midway during the second half, a harmless looking Delroy lob from mid field took on a lethal magnetic course into the Marist goal and the final 1-0 result was determined

The result was devastating for the team, coach, manager, parents and supporters. Marist were clearly superior and on another day would win conclusively.

The Marist squad who played throughout the series with great distinction was Stephen Wilkinson, Ivor Rakic, Steven Magro, Dominik Matic, Adrian Paragalli (Capt), Oscar Zamora, Anthony Mijoc, Andrew Pulsford, Marc Conlon, Dion Canell, Dimitrie Kourtis,Justin Webb, David Geremia, Duncan Marchant, Sam Edwards, Matthew Corvisy and Dieter Tode. ACT Soccer Federation -Junior League.

Six teams competed in the non-competitive Weston Creek mini soccer competition and enjoyed considerable success. Eleven teams were entered in the ACTSF's Junior League competition from age 11 years through to 15 years. One of these teams in the age 11 Division 3 competition comprised boys from St Thomas Kambah under the sponsorship of Marist Soccer. The team was coached by Mr John Byrne who also coached our age 15 team. To our delight, they proved a wonderful advertisement for Marist and their own school by winning the premiershipt Most of these boys will be commencing their senior schooling at Marist in Year 7.

There was much to be enthused about the efforts of our younger age teams. Our age 11, Div 2 team, coached by Mick Winslade developed into a very competitive unit during the season to finish third on the premiership table. In the age 12 competition our Div 2 team went through the second round undefeated and finished runners up for the season and a chance at Division 1 next season John Mikus as coach and provider of great match statistics and player critiques was an example (for other coaches) and inspiration for these boys. The same age group in Division 4, produced the find of the season with this unheralded team running out Premiers. The team was coached by Year 12 student Damon Parker who set an unselfish example to his peers and was rewarded with a fulfilling accomplishment to his schooling at Marist The 1992 Age 12-Div 4 premier

180

team was, Nathan Bowen, Matthew Boyd, Todd Brown, Mark Dempsey,Joao Figueiredo, Paul Grant,Jonathan Grech, Kevin Imbriano, Dermot Kennedy, Lachlan Parrish,James Parker, Ben Preston, Liam Rankin, Matthew Taarnby, Alun Thomas and Luke Wennerbom.

The majority of the better players at Marist in the 13 and 14 year ages are playing for district dubs in the Division 1 or 2 competitions. As a consequence our teams in these age groups struggle to be competitive and the boys are frequently playing against 'school mates'. The committee's efforts to nominate these teams into the most appropriate division was partially thwarted by the ACTSF arbitrarily moving our age 14 - Div 2 into Division 1 after a month of the new season. Although this decision created a degree of angst amongst parents and players the team performed with distinction through to the conclusion of the season and on a number of occasions led their more highly fancied rivals who learnt that there were no easy points against Marist

Injuries and lack of commitment proved a constant drawback to our age 15 - Div 2 team. There is sufficient ability within this age group to be competitive. However, a greater dedication to training and team support will be required if they are to have any future as soccer players for their remaining school years.
