FOCUS ON VOCABULARY What is a prefix?

A prefix is a group of letters that can be added at the beginning of a word to change the meaning of the word. Sometimes knowing a prefix can help you guess the meaning of unfamiliar words.

For many people all over the world, e-mail is the best way of communicating quickly, cheaply, and easily. Because it is so fast and easy, it is also very easy to miscommunicate. To send clear, easy-to-understand e-mails, follow these basic

rules of e-mail use-called network etiquette or” netiquette”.

A colon sometimes introduces a list, especially if the list has long items.

Most e-mail programs offer lots of tools, which include: reply buttons, spell

check, attachment capability, address books, and cc buttons.

statements are very closely related

In 1971, Ray Tomlinson wrote the first e-mail message; by 2001,9.8 billion

e-mail messages were being sent a day.

6. “ “ quotation marks Quotation marks are used to report exactly what someone said. Quotation marks are also used around new words or expressions that the reader might

not understand. Joe said, “Send me an e-mail on that.” One way is to use what are called “emoticons.”

Apostrophes are used to show possession.
