Sussex Central Trefoil Guilds continue to hold their monthly meetings with various activities. There have been some changes of chairperson following the annual meetings. Sussex Central held their Annual Meeting in April, which was supported by 60 members, the Region Chair, our County President – who renewed her Promise as a Trefoil member, our County Commissioner, Division Commissioners and neighbouring County Trefoil Chairs. The song “This Little Guiding Light of Mine” was sang at appropriate points during the meeting and members held battery candles. Guilds reported on a different/favourite meet-

ing during the year. The afternoon concluded with a cream tea, raffle, and an inspiring epilogue followed by “Taps” and “Go Well and Safely.” The County Trefoil holiday to Waddow was successful – 36 went and 36 came back! We had a fun filled, varied week. Waddow was a perfect guiding house for a holiday. There are lots of summery meetings and friendly events for the ACTIVE County Guild, to which EVERYONE is welcome: Croquet at Nymans on Wednesday 10th June, Trail Walk at East Grinstead on Thursday 2nd July.

Join Us The long awaited merge of the two waiting lists, “Waiting to Transfer” on GO! and “Waiting to Join” on JoinUs has now happened. You will have seen details in your e-letter from CHQ. But just to go quickly through: On your “Girl Enquiries”, looking at the first line (in Blue) choose reports. This brings up another line of tabs (in Pink) choose “Waiting List Report” and all should be revealed to you. At the moment I cannot help much than this, as you can see from the screen print my Unit doesn’t have anyone to show on this report, but hopefully I shall be able to find answers if you have any queries. So please do get in touch with me if necessary.

Thank You from County Associates County Associates (the clever idea of Judy Fuller) is to close after 21 years. This is sad but inevitable as we all grow older or are still involved with guiding in some other way. Betty, Pam, Sylvia and Sue have worked really hard over the years to keep us interested and in contact with each other after retiring from our roles. Sylvia and Allan have held a tea party in their garden every year. Some of us have increasingly felt guilty to see Allan and Sylvia going to and fro with kettles, extension leads and all the paraphernalia of setting up a party outdoors up a slope to a lawn 100yds away from the house. They both, as excellent hosts, have had all the worry and planning of this lovely social event, whilst we just turn up and enjoy without much effort ourselves. Of course they have had the help of the committee, for which we are very appreciative.

We will all still meet at different occasions around the County but this is the end of something special and we are, I am sure, both very grateful but sad.

Thank you from us all.

Burgess Hill

Burgess Hill Division Rainbows & Brownies had a very successful Disco to raise funds for Chloe’s international trip to San Francisco, being taught dances by our Guides and Rangers, a great afternoon for everyone. We are busy getting ready for our Annual Garden Fete in May, with the Rainbows and Brownies practicing Maypole dancing and the Guides the Jitterbug. Both Chloe and Sarah had stall at the Lions Day celebra-tions in Burgess Hill Town Centre to raise funds for their international trips. Chloe’s Rainbow Leaders and Guide Leaders got together and prepared an evening meal and social for a group of Leaders to raise funds for her trip. We are organising a Go for It Brownies day this term for all 9+ aged Brownies as it is amazing how many Brownies we have in this age group this term. 7th Brownies have been to Tesco for their Farm to Fork evening and had a really good time.

1st & 7th Brownies had a joint sports evening, run by Jasmine our Young Leader, everybody had fun. We have our textiles bin collecting for Coco’s Foundation and this is having to be emptied regularly.

Leaders from the Division attended the lighting on the VE Day Beacon at St John’s Park on 8th May.

Crawley

Ready Steady Glasgow 2014 Challenge Back in the autumn the girls and leaders at 2nd Maidenbower Brownies had an exciting time and a lot of fun completing the “Ready Steady Glasgow 2014” challenge. We learned about the Commonwealth, the countries in the Commonwealth, tried our hand at various crafts from decorating cupcakes with marshmallow elephants to braiding hair, building our own Loch Ness monsters from recycled materials to making newspaper kilts. We had an amazing adventure travelling around the Commonwealth and taking part in our very own sporting challenge to raise a huge £600.00 for charity.

With the help and support of our Brownie parents and families, we were especially proud of our fantastic achievement in fundraising which we split equally between the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust and a local hospice in Crawley. We have two sisters in our Brownie Unit who sadly lost their grandmother last year and they wanted to do some fundraising for a charity in memory of her. This challenge was the ideal opportunity to keep our promise of fundraising.

Our Brownies have always enjoyed cycling and we decided to involve parents and families by setting up a cycling circuit on the playing field, with parents and families acting as the markers at four base points around the circuit. The girls were split into four groups each starting at a different base point and reporting in at the end of each completed lap. We were extremely lucky with the weather and had a glorious evening for our challenge. Everyone was involved, with the Brownies doing brilliantly with their team challenge by cycling round the course (even the Brownie who could not ride a bicycle managed a whopping 100 lengths of the track on her scooter!)Leaders ran around the course to help marshal with the girls and our fantastic parents and families shouted encouragement on the sidelines and/or recorded completed laps at their base point. The generous sponsorship and support from friends and families of our Brownies really made this a truly remarkable achievement.

30 Year Long Service Award Celebration

1st Maidenbower Brownies and 1st Pound Hill Brownies held a surprise celebration for Brown Owl Jackie Stammers on 6th May to mark her 30 years of service. The girls even managed to keep it a secret during their Brownie Holiday to PGL in Windmill Hill the weekend before the party. They surprised her with flowers, cards, balloons and a celebration cake baked and decorated in the shape of an owl by her granddaughter who is

one of the Brownies.

County Commissioner Deborah Phillips made the presentation to Jackie who, apart from leading two Brownie Units, has previously been a trainer,

District and Division Commissioner.

East Grinstead

Danceathon and Baa Challenge

At our meeting on 3rd March, the 1st East Grinstead Rainbows had a Danceathon in aid of Comic Relief. The dance we did was choreographed by our two Duke of Edinburgh helpers. We also ate red nose cup cakes to keep us going to the end of the meeting, when the parents came in to watch. When all of the money has been collected in, we will have raised about £100.

We have also had fun this term doing the Baa Challenge devised by 1st Rhayader Guides. Activities have included decorating biscuits to look like sheep, sheep threading cards, making woolly hearts for Valentine's Day, having a visit from a member of the Trefoil Guild, who is also a spinner, to show us how spinning is done

and finger crocheting chain necklaces.

Lynne Fallowell

Unit Leader

Around the World with East Grinstead’s Rainbows, Brownies and Guides British Guides in Foreign Countries (BGIFC) make the same promise as we do in the UK, and since 1911 there have been units all over the world, in areas where it is impossible or inappropriate for the girls to join local units. This association has given rise to a number of exciting badge opportunities and back here some of our own girls have recently been working towards the Amazing Asia Badge.

2nd East Grinstead Rainbows Getting to grips with sushi from Japan, coconut muffins from Indonesia and a whole selection of tropical fruits has given the girls a real taste of the East. They have tried on saris, made hand elephants and shadow puppets and decorated Mothering Sunday cards with delightful Islamic art.

3rd East Grinstead Brownies As part of their busy jet-setting programme this term, the 3rd East Grinstead Brownies have not only worked on the Amazing Asia Challenge and the World Culture Badge, they’ve also learned about St David and St Patrick and taken part in the Brownie and Cub Bowling Competition at the Hollywood Bowl in Crawley! Activities have included making coconut muffins, painting henna patterns on their hands, performing a shadow puppet show, making dragons and decorating eggs in an Eastern European style.

1st Felbridge (St Johns) Rainbows, Brownies and Guides Rainbows, Brownies and Guides from Felbridge took part in the Thinking Day 2015 postcard exchange, exchanging postcards with members of WAGGGS from around the world including the USA, Singapore, Australia and the Philippines. During their Thinking Day activity afternoon the girls had the opportunity to make fruit sushi and play games from around the world, find out about WAGGGS and the World Badge and renewed their Promise. The girls also enjoyed an amazing ‘Farm to Fork’ Evening at the nearby Tesco Hazelwick store, which started off with trip to the fruit and veg section and had to hunt for their favourite fruit or vegetable to find out where they come from and how they are grown. They then moved to the behind the scenes area to meet Freddie the Freezer – the girls got to go in to the freezer used to store the goods for the frozen food section, which is set to -19 degrees! The girls all agreed they wouldn’t like to stay in there too long! The Guides also got to find out what happens to the meat and fish that can’t be sold. Then the girls visited the warehouse to see where goods come in and the rubbish and recycling goes out. The next stop was the fish counter where Damian the fishmonger showed the girls the different types of fish Tesco sells, and what some of the fish looks before it arrives on their plates – such as prawns and cod, the difference between farmed and wild salmon, he also demonstrated how to gut and prepare trout and mackerel which brought some squeals of horror and delight when he cut the head off and cut the fish open. A little further down the store the girls stopped at the cheese counter where they learnt about the different types of cheese, before getting the chance to try some cheeses – Mozzarella, Manchego (which is made from sheep milk), St Helen's Farm hard mild goats' cheese and Cheddar cheese. The different cheeses brought about lots of discussions between the girls as to which cheese they had tried before, which ones they liked, and the different uses for cheese

The evening ended where it had started, at the front of the store, and each girl received a certificate and a goodie bag. Thank you to Maria, Helen and Damian at Tesco Hazelwick store for a fantastic evening. Louise Tucker Unit Leader

Haywards Heath

Making a Splash at the Swimarathon Brownies and Guides from Perrymount District took part in the Lions Club Swimarathon on Friday 3rd April. Seven teams of girls swam for 55 minutes to raise hun-dreds of pounds for both the Lions Club’s chosen char-ity - SERV (Service by Emergency Rider Volunteers) - and each teams chosen cause. Emily Dunsby and Rebecca Edwards from 3rd Haywards Heath Guides also made their Promise. All the Leaders were very proud of their Brownies and Guides achievements and great fun was had by all.

Division Social Over 40 individuals attended the Haywards Heath Division Social. Janet Samuel, Pauline Hyner, Janet Templeman and Alicia Smith, who were the Leaders on the 2014 Coco's Foundation trip, told the gathering about their experiences in South Africa. This was very informative and

raised awareness as to the work which the Coco's Foundation is doing.

The retiring Districts and Division Commissioners were recognised and thanked: Judith Trappitt (Forest District) Amanda Fisk (Rural District) Sarah Sampson (Town District) and Diann

Johnson (Division Commissioner).

At the same time the new Division Commissioner, Judith Trappitt, introduced her new District Commissioners: Sue Taylor (Forest District) Diann Johnson (Perrymount District)

and Kim Steadman (Rural District).

Sun Shone for Spring Fair

Sunday 10th May was Haywards Heath’s Spring Fair on Muster Green. Girls and Leaders from 3rd, 6th and 9th Haywards Heath Guides and 3rd Senior Section ran tombolas and sold a variety of homemade cakes. Emma and Haidee from 9th Haywards Heath Guides raised £118.47 which was split equally between Rock-inghorse Children’s Charity and the Samaritans, whilst the 6th Guides raised £130 towards their forthcoming camp at Ferny Crofts in the New Forest.

Division Beetle Drive Brownies from Henfield, Cowfold, Partridge Green and Lower Beeding joined together at Partridge Green Village Hall for their bi-annual Beetle Drive. The evening started off with a colouring competition of a beetle before the main event of trying to get a six from the dice so you could draw a body, before getting a 5 to get the beetles head, 2 x 4 for the feelers, 1 x 3 for a tail, 2 x 2 for eyes and you need 6 x 1 for the legs! It was a lively evening, which saw 1st Partridge Green Brownies winning over all. The highest individual winner was Flo from 3rd Henfield who also won the colouring competition, although all the entries were very good and gave the Judges a challenge - lots of colourful beetles have now left Partridge Green!

Henfield Brownies Sleepover Fun On 27th March, 3rd Henfield Brownies had a sleepover where they made mug cakes which were really fun to make and eat, although they did contain rather a lot of sugar! Fitness Solutions also came in with their dance mats to entertain the Brownies for an hour, enabling the girls to burn off all that sugar! Our Snowy Owl – Lisa Barden - recorded her 100th night away since the nights away badges launched in 2007. Henfield Brownies have received 20 new camp beds thanks to the generosity of a local nursing home and the Parish Council who gave 10 beds each. They can’t wait to test them out at their next Brownie Holiday.

Rainbows and Brownies visit Pets at Home, Burgess Hill.

Both 2nd Hurst Rainbows and 3rd Hurst Brownies have recently visited Pets at

The team there were incredibly friendly and treated girls from both units to a hands on session. They had the chance to hold guinea pigs, rabbits, hamster and a bearded dragon. Girls from 3rd Brownies made their promise at the store, with lots of fish for their audience.

The sessions were free and the store fit these around our unit meeting times. The girls all came away with lots of information about the type of animals they could keep as pets and have all said they would definitely visit again if given the

chance.

Hurst Guides had wonderful evening at Park Wood Campsite with a sausage sizzle.

Beacon District Celebrates World Thinking Day 2015

Excited Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Leaders from Beacon District gathered together on Sunday, February 22nd at Downlands School, Hassocks, to mark World Thinking Day. They were warmly welcomed by District Commissioners, Karen Clarke and Liz Hollingdale, and County Commissioner, Deborah Phillips. On arrival, every girl was given a cotton bag to personalise, together with a unique souvenir of their day in the shape of a fabulous Beacon District Thinking Day badge, specially designed by Guide Leader Kate Harding. Based on the theme of Festivals, a “menu” of some 15 craft and other activities had been devised and the girls spent the morning moving freely around, selecting what they wanted to try, with Leaders and Trefoil Members on hand to assist. Among the many choices on offer was the chance to make Divali Lamps, to try Mehndi Hand Painting, to create Friendship Bracelets and to experience the Japanese art of Origami; any made objects were safely stored in the little bags. There was also an opportunity to attempt some problem solving, designed to test those little grey cells, and to try Maypole Dancing round a real maypole.

The finale, at the end of the morning, included sharing some Thoughts on Thinking Day and camp fire singing round a Giant Trefoil created out of Thinking Day Pennies. This was an excellent event, one which was enjoyed by the girls, their Leaders and visitors alike and the District would like to thank everyone who took part for coming along and making this a Thinking Day to remember.

2nd Copthorne Rainbows - Orlando’s Story 2nd Copthorne Rainbows recently had a visit from ‘Orlando’s Story’, a two week safety awareness program which aims to give children the tools needed to keep safe if they become lost in an urban or rural environment. They teach survival skills that last a lifetime, search and rescues do’s and don’ts and many more important facts. In week one, Rainbows learned about the world of air scent searching and how to keep safe if they become lost, basic steps they can take to help the search teams find them quickly. Orlando, a fluffy black and white border collie (now retired level 1, air scent search dog) visited at the end of the evening and Rainbows were taught how to greet dogs safely and basic animal behaviour.

In week two, the team recapped the eight important points and we were then treated to a visit from Buddy, a black retriever Labrador working dog. The Rainbows were told what to do if a stranger approaches them and what a ‘stranger’ is. Role play cards were used in small groups and showed different scenarios including- ‘you are out with your family when you become separated from them and you are on your own- what do you do?’ The team asks “What if?” questions and repeated important points. The Rainbows all had a fun time as well as learning about keeping safe and of course they

loved meeting Orlando and Buddy! If any units are interested in inviting Orlando’s Story team in, you can contact them on their website - www.orlandostory.co.uk

Bring a Mother/ Grandmother to Guides! The 2nd Crawley Down Guides created invites for their Mum/ Grandmother to come to a cream tea and pamper evening on Tuesday 24th March 2015 at our Guide meeting. The Guides handmade and baked scones and served them with jam, clotted cream and tea/ coffee to their Mum. They also pampered their Mum with a face-pack, hand massage and nail polish! Even our District Commissioner Gill Crook had a face-pack and joined in the fun. The Mums and girls enjoyed the evening so much and have made a request for a ‘bring a Father/ Grandfather to Guides’ evening around Father’s Day!
