Upon moving in at Navar-ro, Barnett had mail waiting — a handwritten letter from Gundy reaffirming OSU’s interest.

“I was like, ‘Is he serious? Does he really want me?’ ” Barnett said. “His interest never went away, and that’s what made (my decision). No one knew but me and my mom, but I knew I was going to Oklahoma State. That was as soon as I got there, I knew.”

Although Barnett’s change of heart upset Gundy, he saw the window of opportunity reopen when Barnett had to take the juco route.

“You just don’t take (re-cruiting) personal,” Gundy said. “Once he didn’t get in school at Arkansas, I figured we didn’t have anything else to lose. He’s from right up the road and it’s hard to find big guys. He really liked Oklahoma State and at the end he didn’t come here, for

whatever reason.”The reasons, Barnett said,

dealt with Arkansas being a better fit. A connection with then-assistant Garrick Mc-Gee, a Booker T. Washington alum, likely played a role.

Ultimately, McGee left for the Alabama-Birmingham head-coaching job and coach Bobby Petrino was fired.

The second time around, a relationship with Gundy blossomed as a result of the letter that came at the right time, when Barnett desper-ately needed motivation.

“I was really excited to hear that coach Gundy had taken his personal time out, that Calvin wasn’t just a player but actually someone he had a concern for,” said Barnett’s mother, April Allen. “He gained my respect and Calvin’s respect.”

Barnett went from down in the dumps to driven for his future. But it wasn’t easy, especially with the academic pressure and being away from home.

“Calvin just blew me away,” Allen said. “He strug-

gled a little bit, but he had a goal in mind. That was his total focus. He knew his goal was there and that’s what he was working toward. He really became a man.”

After two seasons at Navarro, Barnett enrolled at OSU in January 2012 and was as Division I-ready as any junior-college player Gundy has coached. Bar-nett started every game last season, led the team with eight tackles for loss and was named the Big 12’s Defensive Newcomer of the Year.

“I felt like I was living the dream,” he said. “I couldn’t wait for the season to get here, but then it ended just like a dream. You go to sleep and wake up and it’s over. Right now I’m just trying to make sure when that dream comes around again I live it up.”

Because of his long jour-ney to Stillwater, Barnett said he’s able to appreciate the little things he didn’t have in junior college: his workout gear, a training table, the tutoring staff.

“They financially couldn’t

do those things (at Navarro),” he said. “Here, my sock rips and I get to go get another one. … I don’t have a problem most of the time getting up and going to practice. They take care of us.”

A year from now, Barnett could hear his name called in the NFL Draft, which would allow him to provide for his single mother and his two sisters.

“I think it’s a possibility,” he said. “I have to get better. I know that, and I want to get better. I’m not nearly as good as I want to be.”

Until then, Barnett is con-tent with his dream continu-ing at OSU, where he and his mom believe he’s meant to be.

“It had to happen the way it happened,” Allen said. “The Lord knows. He sees a long ways down the road, and sometimes we don’t understand when God says no. But his no’s don’t mean forever. It just means for right now.”

Horschel earns first PGA victoryASSOCIATED PRESS

AVONDALE, La. — Billy Horschel sank a 27-foot putt on the 18th hole to avert a playoff and pick up his first PGA victory on Sunday.

Horschel, 26, tied a course record at the TPC Louisi-ana with an 8-under 64 in the final round of the Zur-ich Classic, good enough to win by one stroke over D.A. Points.

“I hadn’t made a long (putt) all week and I said, ‘I’m due,’ ” Horschel said. “I was like, ‘If it’s my time, this putt needs to go in.’ ”

Inbee Park wins North Texas LPGA: Inbee Park shot a bogey-free 4-under 67 on Sunday to win the inaugural North Texas LPGA Shoot-out by a stroke over Carlota Ciganda.

Park, 24, the world’s No. 1 women’s player, finished at 13-under 271 for her third victory this season and fifth in her last 18 starts.

Sluman and Faxon win Legends of Golf team event: Jeff Sluman partnered with Brad Faxon for a one-stroke victory on Sunday in the Legends of Golf event at the Club at Sa-vannah Harbor.

The duo had five birdies in a seven-hole stretch in the middle of their round to get to 23-under and made par on their final four holes to hold on for the win.

Holt is the only other man to win back-to-back Memorial Marathons, also winning the race in 2003.

Buhler, 26, easily finished ahead of the pack both years. On Sunday, he didn’t see another marathon competitor for the final five miles and finished 10 min-utes ahead of the second-place finisher, Daniel Stone.

“I just got in my own zone and stayed relaxed,” he said.

“I was pretty hydrated. I had people helping me out along the course (with water) as well as more accessibility to the aid stations this year, which helps a lot.

“Hydration, you got to do through the week. I kind of prepared all week for that.”

Next year, Buhler will have the oppor-tunity to be the first man to win three consecutive Memorial Marathons, un-less dental school interferes.

“I would love to come back, but we have our licensure board exams always this week, so maybe we will get some-thing worked out,” he said.

RICHMOND, Va. — It’s been a season of bad breaks for Juan Pablo Montoya, so it was only fitting when things again didn’t go his way.

Montoya was sailing to-ward his first victory since 2010, on an oval no less, when an ill-timed caution ruined everything. He had led 67 laps Saturday night at Rich-mond International Raceway and needed to complete just four more when Brian Vick-ers hit the wall.

Montoya screamed into his radio, pounded his fist against the steering wheel, then quickly collected himself to consider the big picture: He’d come into Richmond ranked 27th in the Sprint Cup stand-ings with absolutely nothing to show for the improvement Chip Ganassi Racing has made this season.

“I know we want to win, but

we need the points,” Montoya radioed crew chief Chris He-roy as they debated strategy.

It was decided that Mon-toya would pit from the lead, take four new tires and try to win in a frantic two-lap over-time sprint to the finish. But he restarted sixth in the out-side lane that was clogged by cars on old tires. Kevin Har-vick restarted seventh, behind Montoya but in the inside lane, and he darted his way around the traffic to the win.

Montoya settled for fourth, his best finish since he was fifth at Martinsville in 2011.

“We got that caution at the

end and it was a no-brainer to take tires,” Montoya said. “I think what hurt us is we restarted on the outside and when you restart on the out-side and people got really bad tires, everything packs up. And when you’re on the out-side, where are you going to jump?”

Montoya has been plagued by loose wheels, flat tires, a fuel pump problem, a gear-box issue — the list goes on and on. And when manage-ment stepped in and replaced his front tire changer before Kansas, Montoya was sty-mied in that race by another loose wheel.

So to have the chance to run out front Saturday night, and to show his No. 42 team is far better than the results indicate, was a small victory for Montoya and his crew.

“We had a great car,” Mon-toya said. “... We needed to come out of here and be smart.”
