2012
During 2012, the DFi Educational Trust was able to achieve significant programmatic, financial, and operational progress. Scholarships were established at two additional institutions: the university of Houston, funded by the Trust’s Berkel & Company Contractors, inc. Scholarship Fund, and the university of Cincinnati, funded by the newly-established Larry P. rayburn Civil Engineering Scholarship Fund, created with a generous endowment from richard goettle, inc. This brings the total number of schools in the scholarship program to seven. A total of $84,500 in scholarships were awarded during 2012, the highest yearly amount since the founding of the Trust in 2006. in addition, an At-Large Scholarship Program was created which, beginning in 2013, will make awards to students from different colleges and universities across the country.
2012 Trust Highlights
2
Financially, the Trust saw its assets grow approximately 7.5% during 2012, in part due to favorable investment results but also thanks to successful fundraising efforts such as the Pleasanton, California golf Outing, organized by Byrl Williams, the Pittsburgh golf Outing led by Seth Pearlman, and the 7th Annual gala Dinner, chaired by David Coleman and held in november in new Jersey, the proceeds of which benefit the DFi Educational Trust Stanley Merjan Scholarship at City College of new York.
During 2012, the Trust Board saw the addition of two new members: roger Healey from richard goettle, inc., and former DFi President Tracy Brettmann, of Berkel & Company Contractors, inc.
On the administrative front, DFi hired an administrator to manage the Trust’s day-to-day operations and thus insure efficiency, continuity, and accountability.

New Berkel Scholarship atUniversity of HoustonWith the Trust scholarship at Carnegie Mellon university becoming an independent stand-alone fund in 2012, the DFi Educational Trust Board selected the university of Houston to replace Carnegie Mellon as a recipient school of an annual $12,500 student scholarship from the Berkel & Company Contractors, inc. Scholarship Fund.
The university of Houston is a Tier One public research university, serving nearly 40,000 students. The department of civil and environmental engineering offers B.S., M.S., M.C.E., and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering as well as master’s and Ph.D. degrees in environmental engineering.
Scholarship Fund Established in Honor of Larry P. Rayburnin november, thanks to an initial donation and multi-year pledge from richard goettle, inc., the Trust established the Larry rayburn Civil Engineering Scholarship at the university of Cincinnati (uC). The scholarship honors deep foundations industry leader and uC alumnus Larry P. rayburn.
The Scholarship Fund will provide a minimum of $10,000 in scholarships annually to at least two uC undergraduate civil engineering students.
Founded in 1819, the university of Cincinnati is a public Tier One university. The university’s College of Engineering and Applied Science offers undergraduate programs in Civil Engineering, Architectural Engineering, and Construction Management and confers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in various focus areas of Civil Engineering.

Trust Scholarships
Scholarship at Carnegie MellonUniversity Becomes Self-SustainingThanks to the efforts of the annual DFi Educational Trust Pennsylvania golf Outing fundraising committee, led by Seth Pearlman, President and CEO of Menard-uSA, the DFi Educational Trust scholarship at Carnegie Mellon university (CMu) became self-sustaining in 2012. it is now supported solely from the net proceeds of the golf event which takes place every July at Chartiers Country Club in Pittsburgh. The golf outing began in 2006 and annual proceeds have quadrupled since inception thanks to the support of local DFi and deep foundation industry members. Due to this fundraising success, the Board decided to create a separate dedicated fund for CMu student scholarships. A total of $12,500 in scholarship money was awarded in 2012 from the new fund.
The scholarship at Carnegie Mellon was previously funded by the DFi Educational Trust-Berkel & Company Contractors, inc. Scholarship Fund. in 2013, the fundraising committee is planning to compliment the proceeds of the Pennsylvania golf Outing with other fundraising activities to enhance the sustainability of the fund.
The Trust administers several scholarship programs funded by endowments, donations, and fundraising events. Eligibility requirements vary from program to program but in general, scholarships are awarded to full-time undergraduate and graduate students in excellent academic standing, who demonstrate financial need, and who are pursuing studies in fields such as civil, geotechnical, or construction engineering.
