New name in aluminium die castingEngine Expo is the right platform for companies across the automotive value chain to display their technical capabilities, and Rockman is participating for the first time to showcase its competence as a supplier of aluminium die casting, and machined and painted assemblies to the leading automotive OEMs and Tier 1s. With a state-of-the-art facility, the company has a presence in five locations in India and has a capacity to process more than 65,000 tons of aluminium alloy every year.

Reducing NOx in downsized enginesThough downsizing by means of air charging was successful in reducing CO

2, it increased the mass flow of

N2. Ogunmuyiwa Motorentechnik

believes it has a solution. The Ogunmuyiwa Engine Cycle enables combustion to occur during the compression stroke without damaging the engine, therefore reducing the admission of N

2 into the downsized

engine and yet still maintaining the CO

2 reduction benefits of downsizing.

This delivers a more complete combustion, enabling higher power densities, higher thermal efficiencies and lower raw HC and CO emissions.

Peering into the depthsWhen you need to see into those small, hard-to-reach places, you have two choices: take the component apart or reach for a videoscope. Rotburg’s KBL series of videoscopes are a modular design, enabling the swapping of various probes, ranging from 10mm down to 0.5mm – for those truly hard-to-reach spots. A high-intensity LED light source makes the KBL series ideal for the visual inspection of motor block cavities, but the company also produces custom videoscopes to suit individual requirements, as well as fibrescopes and borescopes for UV inspections.

Friction coating for lower costs and simpler assemblyFriction has always added weight. Friction shims and friction discs also make component assemblies more complicated than they need to be. But Miba has found a way round this: the friction-increasing particles of Gripcoat mean traditional methods of adding friction to components for a wide range of areas such as engine, transmission, chassis or suspension can be negated.

This means parts can be made lighter and smaller, and in some cases the need for additional components is removed altogether. This is particularly relevant when increasing transmissible torque, as the highly achievable friction factor of Gripcoat leads to the efficient transfer of high torque while reducing operating vibrations.

K1 revolutionises component development

Libralato’s compact rotary engine design

New benchmark for engine analysisHow a new engine performs on paper can often differ from how it performs in the real world, and no engine designer likes surprises. Over the past 15 years, A2MAC1 has established a reputation in the automotive industry with its engine data capture and storage. A2MAC1’s experts collect comprehensive data on the engine by applying a standard process of data collection on the system using its meticulous teardown, metrology and 3D scan technology. The company is also capable of measuring static and dynamic stiffness of engine mounts, torsional vibration and NVH performance.

A2MAC1 Stand 3016

Casting away the sandIt is no secret that the expected development time for new drive technologies in the automotive industry has shortened considerably in recent years. Up to now, sand casting was the only way to manufacture comparable prototype parts quickly, but Heck + Becker is attempting to change that with its K1 prototyping, which revolutionises component development. The K1 competence platform allows the company to analyse and optimise the practicability of components in the die-casting process at a very early development stage. This completely removes the need for sand casting, saving time and allowing initial trials to be conducted earlier in the development process.

Heck + Becker Stand 3114

Libralato’s revolutionary rotary hybrid engineA compelling new concept of engine architecture and thermodynamic cycle, the Libralato rotary hybrid engine solves the problems of the better-known Wankel rotary engine (poor combustion, overheating and sealing wear) through the exchange of gases between three dynamic chambers and its non-contact, long-escape path sealing. Designed by Dr Ruggero Libralato over the course of 30 years, the company claims its rotary hybrid engine can be as efficient as a diesel engine, but 50% smaller and 30% less costly. With exceptionally high, asymmetric compression and expansion ratios and its integrated exhaust gas recirculation (<30% EGR) for ultra-low emissions, the Libralato also enables plug-in hybrid (PHEV) systems to fit cost competitively into standard engine bay apertures.

Libralato Stand 3426

Aluminium cylinder head 66% lighterAdditive manufacturing has revolutionised the production of complex components, and nowhere more so than in the automotive industry. Components that used to be cast or assembled from multiple parts can now be produced whole

and more efficiently. Perhaps the best example is FIT’s aluminium cylinder head on display at Engine Expo 2017. With topologically optimised microstructures, it weighs 66% less than the original and has a 12 times greater cooling surface.

Single supply of ferrous and non-ferrous castingsExtensive in-house manufacturing facilities enable Ascent Casting Technologies to provide a single-source supply for ferrous and non-ferrous castings. Ascent’s portfolio of products and services includes the latest 3D casting simulation software, pattern/tooling manufacturing, rapid prototyping, tool-less sand sintering, an in-house proto foundry plant, spectrographic metal analysis of castings, mechanical testing of materials, and fully equipped multi-axis CNC machines.

Tailor-made turbo solutionsTurbochargers can affect an entire powertrain, and the influence of design on the unit’s performance can make a huge difference. Although many turbocharger producers focus on high-volume production, Van Der Lee Turbo Systems is different. Its high-end technical solutions for

matching, designing, development, testing and manufacturing turbo systems are focused on tailor-made solutions, providing flexibility and innovation for customers, and ensuring the turbocharger offers optimal quality and performance.

Casting capacity Cast metal still provides the heart and soul of many automobiles: steel forgings for connecting rods, crankshafts, wheel hubs and axle ends; cast iron for cylinder blocks, bearing caps, bed plates, exhaust manifolds and crankshafts; and aluminium for cylinder heads. So capacity is crucial for cast-metal hungry manufacturers. Brazil-based WHB has a total capacity of 250,000 tons per year of iron castings, 6,500 tons per year of aluminium castings and 10,000 tons per year of steel forgings. No wonder the company is so popular with current automotive manufacturers.

Piston pin protectionRecent high-profile investigations have led to increased scrutiny of the engine and emission testing industry. As a result, new solutions and concepts are entering the market to help engine manufacturers drive down emissions. But often these result in higher thermal and mechanical constraints on different engine components, such as piston pins. HEF Group’s ta-C coatings have been designed with new surface properties to secure the durability of piston pins undergoing increased stresses. This is complemented by recent investment in new in-house testing tools, including piston pin test rigs.

Keeping out the heatFire barriers and heat shields are not something that automotive manufacturers can afford to get wrong, especially with the increasing application of new technologies such as lithium-ion batteries. As well as its well-known high-temperature insulation for exhaust systems end engine bays, HKO Heat Protection Group has developed fire barriers for high-voltage battery packs, protecting against fire caused by thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries. Due to its electrical resistance value, this fire-retardant multilayer construction also protects against electrical shock during normal operation, and compared with standard electrical insulation it is up to 12 times lighter at a 6mm thickness.
