Dear Parents/Caregivers 

K­6 Athletics Carnival (Reminder) We are looking forward to our very first K­6 athletics carnival on Monday, 29 August at Campbelltown Stadium. All parents carers and grandparents are welcome to come along to join the fun.  

Ruse Writer Festival Early this year, we got involved in the (ALfI) Action Learning for Innovation Project, in which we investigated ways to improve student engagement in writing. As part of this project, students have been involved in a range of activities to develop a stronger understanding of the different purposes for writing. 

On Wednesday, 26th August we held the Ruse Writers’ Festival. This celebration was one aspect of our writing journey and we look forward to future celebrations in the area of writing.  

We thank our students, parents, carers, grandparents and community for making this day such an amazing success. We further thank our special guests, Mrs Kay Rigas, Director of Public Schools NSW and Ms Yvette Poshoglian, from the Premier's Reading Challenge Unit.

Students riding scooters and bikes to school   Parents and carers can you please assist us with reinforcing the safe and legal use of bikes and scooters by encouraging your child to: 

● wear a helmet and protective gear ● understand and follow the road rules ● give way to pedestrians 

We want our students and community to be safe. We have had recent reports from the community about unsafe behaviour from some of our students, while riding their bikes and scooters. The school will be monitoring this over the next few weeks. Could you please remind your child/children that there is no riding within the school grounds, wear the appropriate safety equipment and ensure they give way to pedestrians. 

 Monster Raffle  Well the Ruse Public School community have done it again! $1669 profit for the year 6 farewell. Thank you to everyone who purchased sausages and monster raffle tickets. A huge thank you to the wonderful senior students who worked tirelessly today. Thank you to the parents who helped out and a great big thank you to all the staff for your prize donations and your help throughout the day.  

  The Partners in Learning  parent feedback survey  Our school will also be participating in the Partners in Learning  parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me  suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.  Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.   The survey is conducted entirely online at home or on public computers. The survey will typically takes 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 29 August and 21 October, 2016. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, however, your responses are very much appreciated.

Stage 1 Powerhouse Museum Excursion  On Monday the 15th August, Stage One students went on an excursion to the Powerhouse Museum to explore and discover how technology and transport has changed over time. The students enjoyed seeing old trams and trains, even standing in on an old steam train. They experienced what life is like in zero gravity up in space and looked at a pieces of moon rock.   Thank you to all the parents and carers who attended our excursion and to those parents and carers who offered to attend. Without your support, our excursion would not have been possible.The students were safe, respectful learners and represented our school with pride.                      

     

 

  

SRC Report ­ Term 2/3   

The SRC has been very busy over the past weeks, planning and setting up their project “The Ruse Barnyard”. Fifteen students from the leadership team chose roles in the project and have been enthusiastically carrying them out. We purchased rakes, shovels, spades, watering cans, gloves and seedlings for 9 varieties of vegetables. Shane made the garden beds, the students cleared the soil and the planting was completed.   Shane, Mr Mac and Adrian Dore built the wonderful chook pen and 4 chooks came to live at Ruse PS. The SRC held a competition to name them and most of the students had a go. The chooks were finally named: Chicky, Henny Penny, Tornado and Sparkles by a student from each stage. The Barnyard farmers regularly water and weed the vegies, collect the eggs (10 so far) and do a general tidy up.   Last term the SRC held a “Crazy Day” mufti day and raised money to assist Lucy McGurn and Kynan Summers with their expenses whilst competing at state level in netball and cross country.   This Term, in week 8 the SRC will be holding a “Favourite Sport” mufti day. The money collected will be donated to the Picton Flood Appeal.   Last week, 42 students from the Stage 3 leadership team took part in National Tree Planting Day. Clinton’s Toyota generously donated fruit trees, soil, plant food etc and the students dug the holes and planted 11 trees – apple, orange, lemon, mandarin and peach. Each student was given a special shirt and gloves from Clinton’s. Two of their employees spent the morning planting trees with the leadership team. Remaining shirts and gloves were distributed to K­6 students.   Thank you Ruse PS SRC   ICAS Assessments  A number of our students sat the ICAS assessments in the areas of Science, Digital Technologies, Spelling, Writing, English and Mathematics. We have received results back from the following assessments. Congratulation to all students who sat the assessments. The following students either received a Merit, Credit or Distinction.
