FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Welcome to the second last newsletter for this term. Exam time
is almost upon us. The Year 11 and Year 10 students have
started and the Year 7’s to 9’s will sit their exams next week. We
wish them all the best and we know students will try their
hardest. For the Year 7 students it will be a first time experience
for them but as parents please reinforce that it is as much about
them getting used to the process as it is a demonstration of
knowledge.
School Council
The College Council met on Tuesday evening of this week. We
welcomed Kathy Tyrovolas as a new co-opted member for the
next two years. Kathy has a son in Year 7 and I am sure she will
make a valuable contribution to the school governance, as all
our members do.
As a normal part of the meeting financial reports are submitted.
The College is in a reasonable position financially and we will do
our best to ensure that this continues so that we can plan further
improvements to our teaching and learning programs and
facilities.
The Annual Report for 2014 was presented and approved. The
data indicates that we are performing well in all areas
compared to ‘like schools’, especially in two where we were
ranked above like schools: VCE results and the percentage of
students exiting to further studies or employment. Council also
looked at the MySchool Website. I encourage parents to go
onto the site as the information gives some good data about
our school and the teaching and learning outcomes.
At the meeting I also presented information about the
Curriculum Day that is planned for August 7th next term. Council
has a role in monitoring and approving the amount of pupil free
time the school has in a year. I am pleased to say that this will
be the only interruption to the learning program during Term 3 so
we are looking to 10 weeks of steady learning before we lead
into the Term 4. This stability is especially important for our Year
12 students as their course work will be completed before the
end of the term. The teachers will be spending most of the day
rewriting courses as a large number of our VCE subjects are
changing study designs for 2016.

Facilities
Yesterday we had a meeting with our facilities
project manager to begin to plan our next pressing
projects. We intend to:
Move our textiles facilities into a bigger space.
The expansion of the textiles/fashion design
subject into the VCE level has meant that we
now need a bigger area to meet the demands
of the subject. We are looking at moving the
room from the B Block into C2. This involves the
relocation of all the cupboards that house the
sewing machines.
Carry out some internal work in the library which
will allow for an expansion of the work area.
Build new locker bays for the Year 10 students
who are currently in the B Block corridor. This will
enable us to carry out improvements to the
corridor and look at developing an Art Gallery in
the future.

Year 7 Soccer
Congratulations Year 7 Girls
The Year 7 girls soccer team competed in the
Moonee Valley Division at Fairburn Park on Friday
29th May. The girls provided formidable opposition
and won both of their matches because of their
intensive defence and excellent ball control. We
beat Essendon Keilor College 3-0 and we also
beat Sirrius College 5-0.
We had many outstanding players and every
single player fulfilled their role very impressively.
We are all looking forward to our next round of
matches.
Well done girls

Year 7 Boys Football
On Friday 22nd May, 23 Year 7 boys represented
our school in the Interschool football competition
against EKC and Buckley Park. Our first game was
against EKC and the boys started the game in
fantastic fashion. Our first goal was kicked within
the first 30 seconds and this set the scene for the
remainder of the match. Rosehill went on to kick
12 goals for the game, allowing only one goal
from the opposition. Campbell Edwardes kicked
five goals while playing in the ruck and our on-
ballers worked tirelessly to get the ball into our
forward line. Other standout performers in the first
game included our captain, Dylan Jaap, half
back flanker, Flynn Howell, and the centre square
general, Nick Gazetas. Goal kickers included
Campbell Edwardes, Michael Jones, Nick
Gazetas, Flynn Howell, Dylan Jaap, Max Anderson
& Jedd Tatum.
The second game saw us come up against a
tougher opposition in Buckley Park College.
Buckley had earlier beaten EKC by a lesser margin
than us and were fortunate enough to have a
break between matches. Rosehill on the other
hand, had to play two games back-to-back,
which proved a massive disadvantage in our push
for victory and a chance to move onto the next
stage of competition. Unfortunately our players
couldn’t maintain the same level of intensity and
we ultimately went down by 6 goals. Our best
player was Harvey Wilkes, who, despite his size,
went in hard at the footy and kept getting back
up after a few heavy knocks. Goal kickers were
Harvey Wilkes, Dylan Jaap and Jalen Gill.
I was very impressed with the way the boys
played. All students tried their hardest and they all
played the game in good spirit. Well done fellas.

Year 7 Girls Netball
On Wednesday 20th May the Year 7 girls Netball
team competed in the interschool sports. Despite
some great netball the girls didn’t make it to the
finals. They tried their hardest and improved
dramatically throughout the day. I witnessed
some fantastic teamwork and a great defensive
duo in Ella-Mae and Grace Soonalole as well as
great leadership skills from our captain Mia
Fitzpatrick. A great day was had by both myself
and the students.

Intermediate Girls Netball Competition
On Tuesday 27th May, 17 Intermediate girls
represented our school in the Interschool Netball
competition. We had an ‘A’ team and a ‘B’ team.
The B team unfortunately lost all their games but
to their credit, improved with every quarter. The
girls tried different positions throughout the day
and played hard in each game!
The A team had a good day on the court. Our first
game was against Buckley Park and the girls
started the game in fantastic fashion leading by
five goals at half-time. Unfortunately a few
turnovers in the third quarter allowed Buckley to
take the lead and win the game by one goal. We
won the next two games convincingly which put
us in the semi-final against Strathmore. Strathmore
had a very strong team with decent height on our
girls. A hard fought out game put us into the
grand final against none other than Buckley Park.
It was a close contest all game, much like the first
game 1 but unfortunately we lost by 2 goals.
I was very impressed with the way the girls played.
Everyone tried their hardest and they all played
the game with enthusiasm and good spirits. Both
teams had a lot of talent but the stand outs for the
day were Aislinn Taiaroa and Mikayla Jones.
Well done girls!
Miss Giannino
Year 8 Interschool Netball
On 21st May the Year 8’s competed in interschool
netball at Broadmeadows leisure centre. There
were two teams representing the school, an ‘A’
and ‘B’ team. Each team had 9 players. The B
team played two games against Strathmore and
East Keilor. Even though we lost two games, we
progressed with our netball skills as we played
each quarter. It was a good chance to try all the
different positions and work out what positions we
played best in. Overall, we enjoyed the day and
had fun. The coaches helped us and trained us so
that we were prepared and thanks to them we
had a spectacular day.
By Rhiannon Forbes
On 21st May the Year 8 girls went to interschool
netball. We had 2 teams, in 2 different pools. We
played Buckley Park, Mount Alexander,
Strathmore and EKC. Unfortunately the B team lost
all their games but put in a great effort and
displayed sportsmanship. The A team lost their first
game to Buckley Park by 9 but redeemed
themselves in their second game winning against
Mount Alexander College with scores 25-4. This
meant the A team were going through to the
semi-finals. We played Strathmore in the semi-final
but unfortunately we lost. Both teams had a great
time showed lots of enthusiasm. Thank you to the
coaches, we had a great day and we are looking
forward to next year’s round robin.

Year 7 Boys Soccer
On Wednesday 27th May the Year 7 Boys travelled
to Debney Park for the district soccer tournament.
The team finished on top of their pool despite
playing back to back games. The Boys made
short work of Buckley Park College and Mt
Alexander College winning their games 3–1 and
4–1, respectively. This put the Rosehill Boys in the
semi-final against Essendon-Keilor College. The
team maintained excellent attacking pressure
and won the game 4–0. The grand final was
against Strathmore Secondary College. In the last
few minutes of the first half the Strathmore team
slipped a goal by the weary Rosehill defenders.
Despite a few chances the Rosehill Boys were
unable to equalize.
A special mention should go to Tony Barbaro and
Stratos Sarikoudis who captained the side. The two
boys showed outstanding leadership and
communication skills throughout the day. Nicolas
Gazetas and Peter Giorges also demonstrated
excellent touch, scoring goals at key points.

Japan Tour
On Friday morning of last week we arrived back
from our school trip to Koggakan Senior High
School. The trip was important for me as I needed
to visit the school so as to get a better
understanding of the environment where our
Japanese exchange students are coming from
and to meet the teachers from the school who
have worked so tirelessly and supported the
exchange. From the perspective of both Rosehill
and Koggakan we believe the program is highly
valuable. The schools are alike in many ways and
the environment at Rosehill is not as dissimilar to
that of Koggakan as I was assuming. What makes
the program work so well can be summed up as
stated in my Farewell speech to the host families
(made in Japanese): ”Students are the same all
over the world. They love to laugh, sing, dance.”
The end result of our discussions with the
Koggakan staff is that both schools want to
continue the arrangement well into the future and
we will endeavour to do so.

and positive learning environments and innovative and diverse teaching strategies. This is complemented by Respect,
Cooperation and Commitment by all members of the school community New skills, new knowledge and understanding will

The trip itself was highly successful with all students
learning much about the culture, traditions and
customs within Japanese society. We started in
Tokyo visiting the Ghibli museum, a museum
entirely devoted to the demonstration of
Japanese animation. It was a fascinating insight
into movie animation making, both modern and in
the past. Of course the visit to Tokyo had to
include a day at Disneyland and I must say there
was plenty there for adults to enjoy as well as the
students.
Hiroshima was a shock for us all. The purpose of
this visit was to build a greater understanding in
our students of the physical and mental horror
associated with nuclear weapons and the
aftermath. We have all learned that mankind
must do everything possible to avoid any such
devastation in the future. The visit to the museum
was extremely moving for all of us. We also visited
the island of Myajima.
Just another train station! (Hiroshima on the way to
Miyajima Island.)
Hiroshima was followed by Kyoto where we really
experienced Japanese culture through our visits to
Shinto shrines and sampling meals at many
different restaurants. Our students learned about
the shrines and Shinto methods of spiritual hand
cleansing, praying and body purification.

Cleansing the body with holy smoke!
It was then off to Ise city to Koggakan Senior High
School. This was a real Japanese experience for
our students, learning real home cultural practices
and how to cope and overcome language
barriers. After this we headed off to Nagoya to try
our voices at Karaoke, shop and prepare for our
trip home. Shopping was so successful that one
girl’s case weighed in at 29.7kg, the limit being
30kg.

In conclusion, Mrs Smart and Mr Hayakawa have
put together a wonderful Japanese trip which has
been fine-tuned over many years. I would like to
thank all the students and their families for helping
to make this a wonderful trip for all involved and
we are all looking forward to our Japanese friends
arriving in July next term.
