(
wedding anniversary on the 25th ofMay, even though he went to Belize
and left her in Windsor. KENTrounded the fine off to the nearest
$5 and charged DEL $20.(IBM math?)WAYNE h AUDRA LIGHT celebrated 24
years of marriage on the 11th ofthis month. KENT again rounded offto the nearest $5, and came up with$20.(more IBM math?) They're nottwins but, share the same BD DAVIDLORENZEN & MARK WALSVICK both became
one year older June 10. MARK didn'tstay to enjoy recognition, but DAVEenjoyed $15 worth, (who wants to betMARK pays less?) ALLEN RICH paid $5or his BD, June 11 even though (IBMeyes) KENT thought it was the 6th.
PACIFIC LUMBER COMPANY
JOHN CAMPBELL, President
Mr. CAMPBELL came to speak andused most of his time to presentLumber Companies views of forestmanagement. Environmental groupssuch as Earth First are protestingthe cutting of "Old GrowthRedwoods".
Pacific Lumber Company (PALCO)has been a solid citizen of Humboldt
County for many years, and hasmanaged the forests carefully.PALCO operates one of the oldest
lumber companies on the West Coast, having started with 6,000 acres 121years ago. The company currentlyemploys 1300 people who harvest andmanage forests on 300 square milesin Humboldt County.
In 1986 a hostile take over byMAXXAM, Inc., had all theingredients of a good Press story.
I was a wealthy family fueding overcontrol of publicly held assets.Junk Bonds, with the assistance of
Drexel, Burnham, Lambare, were usedto finance the take over, and tipped
the balance toward MAXXAM. In spiteof the take over, the management hasremained virtually the same.
JOHN feels their plightreceives little press coverage whencompared to the coverage the pressgives Earth First and other fringeenvironmental groups. He cited therecent coverage the PD gave thebombing of two Earth Firstactivists. The whole Humboldt area
is concerned about the effect
extreme environmentalists view mayhave.. They feel they may loserights to use private property, forlittle benefit. Citizens of the
Humboldt area are concerned about
the basics of food, shelter andearning a living. They cametogether in a demonstration, "TheRight to Work" rally two weeks ago.
The argument is over old growthredwood forests PALCO owns. Old
growth trees are the most valuableand marketable, as they have thefewest knots. As a forest grows,-itcreates a canopy that blockssunlight from the forest floor orlower portion of each tree. Thispart of the tree provides, when cut, clear (no knots)lumber. Youngforests are very productive becausewood (up to 7% per year) is addedeach year; much more than old growthtrees. Also, the new forestsconvert carbon dioxide to oxygen ata much higher rate. The mostvaluable trees are 7 feet across at
the base. This is the basis of
PALCO claim that forests are arenewable resource to be managed.
MR. CAMPBELL fears the
political process will create lawsthat will damage the Humboldt areafor little or no benefit to the rest
of California. He cited initiativeson the ballot, if passed, will let
people, selected for politicalreasons not forest management
knowledge, in Sacramento control theforest. Most initiatives are
politically named to give theimpression of doing something; whenin fact, they don't. For example,"Big Green" will put a 1 yearmoratorium on harvesting treesgreater than 32" in diameter. This
will force immediate harvest of
smaller trees, eliminating aninventory generation planned forfuture harvest. The "Forests
Forever" initiative would splitPALCO from its parent and allow theemployees to buy it. MAXXAM hasn't,and is unlikely to, agree to whatthe environmentalists consider areasonable price.
The lumber industry supportsthe "Global Warming and Clear-Cutting Reduction, WildlifeProtection and Reforestation Act"
This initiative would restrict stripharvesting when in public view, andgenerally allow the lumber companiesto continue to manage their forest.
KENT thanked MR. CAMPBELL for
taking the time to come and speak tous by presenting him with one of ourmugs.
DOES ROTARY MAKE A DIFFERENCE???According to JUDY LUCHSINGER,
Chairperson of World CommunityService of the Lakeport Rotary Club, the donations of Sunrise andLakeport Rotary Clubs made a bigdifference to the children attendingschool in Coyhaique, Chile. Weprovided the funds and the localRotary Club purchased four lowcombustion heaters for the school. She visited the school and showed usslides of the trip.
The school was built like it
was in "...Santa Monica," not highin the mountains in a very coldclimate. It has lots of windows andno insulation. Prior to our and
Lakeport Rotary donations, thedormitory had three wood burningstoves which didn't provide enoughheat. Half the students must live
at the school in dormitories, sleeping on beds with a sinqlemattress. Another heater went in
the cafeteria.
The terrain is much Ilk r-
California. The Chilians claim theymust look every morning to be surethe Argentinians haven't moved theborder. The last slide was the view
of Castico Serra, a large mountainoverlooking the school.
Some of you may have heard
comments about her lost skirt. When
she left Lakeport where she is1serving her fourth term as 'Superintendent of Schools, herfourteen year old daughter asked if*she could help load the car. JUDYsaid sure. Upon arriving Wednesdaynight, her daughter called to saythe skirt to her suit fell off the
hanger and was still in Lakeport. To JUDY, and I speak for the wholeclub, you're welcome to our club anytime in skirt, slacks or shorts. We
enjoyed your presentation and yourvisitation.

Regular MeetingSpeaker: Chris Barr
Topic: Peace Corps
This is my last bulletin. Iknow some are glad. I have learneda lot about writting a bulletin, some of which I thought I shouldshare. The tools for writing aRotary Bulletin are: a Computer, steno pad, good ears, and sizablebottle of spirits. The computer isused to write the bulletin on. You
will notice I did not say a goodcomputer, as just any computer ismost easily blamed when errors aremade, and they will be made. Thesteno pad is to take notes aboutthings good ears hear. A lot is
heard that cannot be printed, butnoted. The large bottle of spiritsis to break writer's cramp, acondition I've never suffered from.
The spirit's are used eitherstraight, over the rocks or withyour favorite mixer. Personally, Iprefer Bourbon k Soda with a twistof lemon. I firmly believe inprevention and regularly consumedgood spirits to prevent writer'scramp. It worked.
I learned early to respect thetruth. If used improperly, or toldabout those who can levy fines, itcost money. It's great when theeditor likes the President as theytalk often. The President likes to
get his or her point accross throughthe bulletin, without ever admittinghe or she is doing it. Working withKENT was okay, however, I soonlearned to be wary of his mentioningthe bulletin in our meetings. Itusually cost me money.
Everyone talks about the powerof the press. It's true the pressdoes have power. The only power Ienjoyed was watching MAX (namedafter MAXWELL SMART), our cat, gocrazy when the printer's head movedfrom side to side. He acts like an
avid fan at a tennis match.
My wife made sure I never letthe power go to my head. She proofread every bulletin, correcting any,(and she always found some) errorsshe found. I've learned if you everwant to know where you are making amistake, ask your spouse. You willlearn all too soon. Actually, SUEwas a great help. She also gave agood description of weekly bulletinwriting; "It's like the laundry, you're never done." I hope you haveenjoyed my bulletins. Good luck toCAROL ESTES will do this next year.

Dear Sunrise Rotarian:
Please review the enclosed proposed bylaw changes. Atour regular meeting on the 28th of this month you will havean opportunity to vote on these bylaw changes. This letteris your official notification.
We thought you might like to know why the changes areproposed. The first change will increase our annual dues to$120. This is the first increase in our club dues since theclub began, however the portion we must send to RI and thedistrict has risen steadily. When the club started, 53% ofdue revenues remained in the club to cover operating expenses. Currently, under existing dues structure the amountremaining is 43%. This increase will get us back to ourstarting point.
The second change provides time for the Board of Directors to meet with the nominating committee prior to presenting the ballot to the membership for vote. This change givesyour board time flexibility which will be used to do a betterjob.
We encourage you to join us in supporting these changes.Should you desire additional information, contact us. directly.
Very truly yours,
