KYLE BUSCH
WINS AT LOUDONBY GERALD HODGES
THE RACING REPORTER
SPECIAL TO THE ATLANTIC NEWS
LOUDON | Kyle Buschwon Sunday’s Lenox Indus-trial Tools 300 Nextel Cuprace in a green/ white/checkered finish at NewHampshire Raceway.
“They told me I betternot miss this race, becausehe (Kyle Busch) had a fastcar,” said car owner RickHendrick. “But I’m way tooold for these kinds of finish-es.”
Busch, who led the mostlaps of any driver, was lead-ing the 300-lap race when acaution came out during lap298, setting up the multi-flagfinish.
While speedway safetycrews were cleaning updebris from the wreck thatinvolved Clint Bowyer andBrian Vickers, Michael Wal-trip ran into the back ofRobby Gordon’s No. 7Chevrolet.
This caused an additionaldelay and the cars had to cir-cle the track three moretimes while wreckers scram-bled to push Waltrip’s car offthe track.
This complicated thingsfor most of the leaders, because many had onlyplanned fuel to last throughlap 302.
The green flag was final-ly waved on lap 307. Theleaders were: Busch, DennyHamlin, Carl Edwards,Elliott Sadler, and Greg Bif-fle.
As soon as the race wasrestarted, Sadler ran out of
fuel. Edwards was able toget by Hamlin, when hisgasless car sputtered andthen slowed.
It was the third win ofBusch’s career and it movedhim into fourth in the NextelCup points.
“The biggest thing for usis to run our own race anddo our own thing,” saidBusch. “That’s what wewere able to do. The teamgave me a good enough car.I was able to stay out front, and all we needed was thegood pit stops they gaveme.”
Edwards was able tomake up ground on Buschduring the last lap, but hadto settle for second afterwinning Saturday’s Buschrace.
“I had a lot of fun up herethis weekend,” saidEdwards. “We won theBusch race and today camein second. It was a blast. Wehad a good race car and agreat team. The only thingbetter would have been towin this race, too.”
Polesitter Ryan Newmanand Tony Stewart tangled onlap 92. Stewart had to pit forrepairs, and when hereturned to the track, he was23 laps down. His 37th placefinish dropped him to 11thin points.
During the restart on lap96, Michael Waltrip got intothe back of Newman’s No.12 Dodge and pushed himinto another car. Newman’spit crew had to replace theradiator. He returned to thetrack, but 24 laps down.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. lost anengine in his No. 8 Chevro-let during lap 145 and fin-
ished 43rd.“You never like some-
thing like this,” he said, “butour engine department hasdone a good job and we’vejust got to stay focused.”

CAN WALTRIP HOLD OFF
FATHER TIME?Darrell Waltrip has
enough grandfather clockssignifying MartinsvilleSpeedway victories to stocka clock store, but Saturday’sGoody’s 250 isn’t about first-place hardware for the veter-an/ retired driver.
He just hopes to hold offfather time long enough topull out a respectable finishin what he says is absolutelyhis final race.
“My intentions are tocome there, and I’m notgoing to be so naïve as to sayI’m going to come there andwin, but if I could comethere and finish in the top-10, I would be very, veryhappy,” Waltrip said viaphone as he tried to corralone of his daughter’s horseson his Tennessee farm.
His experience andknowledge has not beeneroded by time and the 59-year-old Waltrip has beentoiling to get his body backto prime racing shape.
Waltrip’s entry into theGoody’s 250 has been calleda marketing ploy by some. He’s been out of a race carand in the announcer’s seat
for FOX for six years now, making only an occasionalCraftsman Truck Series startsince he officially retiredafter the 2000 season.
During those race-freeyears, he has made severalAaron’s commercials withhis brother Michael, plead-ing for a chance to driver hisyounger brother’s BuschSeries car, the DreamMachine, in each commer-cial. And each time he hasbeen rebuffed.
But Waltrip is adamant— this isn’t about rentingfurniture and televisions, it’sabout showing he can stilldrive a race car.
“I’m coming up therebecause I want to race onemore time and I wouldn’t bedoing it if it was just aboutmarketing. I’m doing itbecause I believe we can becompetitive,” said Waltrip.
Waltrip said he’s relievedthat he doesn’t have toworry about qualifying forthe Goody’s 250. Michael’sDream Machine has hadsomeone behind the wheelfor much of the Busch Seriesseason and is high enough inowner points where it isguaranteed a spot in thefield.
“The good news is I don’thave to worry about qualify-ing,” said Waltrip. “That’sone of the hardest thingsyou have to worry aboutwhen you haven’t been in acar in a while and you haveto go out there and putdown that good lap. That’sprobably harder than therace itself. But I don’t haveto worry about that. We’re inthe race. I can go out thereand practice and work onthe race set up and notworry about anything else.”
