Returning to Columbus in 1960, Gertie uti-lized her skills in the sales promotion andadvertising department of a major farmimplement company. Four years later, she metand married her husband Jim, who was aflight instructor at the Ohio State UniversityAirport.
Soon after, Jim was hired by Lake CentralAirlines (which later became US Airways) andwas stationed in Indianapolis, Indiana, wheretheir daughter Teri was born. In 1970, the fam-ily moved to Kingston to be close to Jim’s newbase at Logan Airport in Boston. Gertie keptbusy raising her daughter, being involved incivic projects, working at a real estate officeand later operating a consignment shop.
Now, 35 years later, Gertie is enjoying theopportunity to devote herself to her painting.She has attended several workshops and hasalso worked in pen and ink and graphite. Herdaughter Teri, has written a children’s bookwhich her mother illustrated. Two of Gertie’spolar bear paintings won the Children ChoiceAward (1999 and 2000) in the Families Firstexhibit at the Children’s Museum inPortsmouth.
The McGlincheys are members of the Sea-coast Artist Association, producing themonthly newsletter for its 169 members. Ger-tie has exhibited in numerous area art shows,as well as in several libraries and restaurants.Several of her paintings are in collectionsthroughout the country. When doing pet por-traits, Gertie often works from photographs,but enjoys meeting her subject “in person” ifpossible. Commissions are available and wel-come.

KENSINGTON | Stu-dents in grades K-5 enjoyeda day of food, facing-paint-ing and time travel at theKensington ElementarySchool on Tuesday, June 6.
The festivities were apart of the school’s annualfield day held at the end ofeach academic year.
Lili Spinosa, mother oftwo and physical educationteacher, said that field daysat the school have had dif-ferent themes in the pastfew years to keep the kidsinterested.
“After awhile, it’s thesame old thing — running,jumping, getting sunburnedand bitten by mosquitoes,”she said.
Prior to this year’s “TimeTravel Field Day,” themeshave included “The RedSox” and “The Olympics.”
Spinosa said that the 12different stations set up onthe school’s field weremeant to represent differenttimes in history. Studentsembarked on a “Louis andClarke Expedition” obstaclecourse, made their ownpaper airplanes and threwthem for distance at “1900:The Airplane” and jour-neyed back to the 50’s withthe Limbo and old timerock- and-roll at “The1950’s: Sock-Hop” station.
Some activities such as“Renaissance Face-Paint-ing” allowed students torest and exercise their cre-ative talents while others,like “The Timeline” chal-lenged students to test theirknowledge of history.
At the end of the day,Spinosa said studentswould bury a time capsulewith mementos and notes.The kids plan to have itunearthed in 30 years.

friends.“We challenge everyone
to learn all of their groupmembers’ names by the end
of the day,” Spinosa said.The school’s PTO pulled
together to provide snacksand a barbecue lunch,
served when the studentstook a break from their timetravel.
“We couldn’t do field day
without the parents andstaff … we have so muchfood here, it’s like Thanks-giving,” Spinosa said.
For many students, likePatrick Soper, field day isthe much anticipated finaleto the school year. Showingoff the cheetah-face heacquired at the “Renais-sance Face-Painting” sta-tion, the fourth grader saidhe enjoys “the action andthe fun.”
“It’s fun playing andmeeting your friends…Actually, it’s one of myfavorite days of the year. Igo to school for this,” hesaid.
But the kids were not theonly ones enjoying field day.Parents, grandparents,teachers and staff turnedout for the festivities andsome even participated.
One parent, Ken Fraser,taught students the “Twist”while they waited on linefor the Limbo at “The1950’s: Sock Hop” station.Fraser, a deejay, providedfree music for the event. Hesaid he enjoys the Kensing-ton Elementary School fieldday just as much as the kids.
“It’s a blast,” he said. “Itake off from work for this.”
