We started out in a little tiny office with a couple of staff people and worked our way up. Our streets lacked retail, office tenants, pedestrians and had the perception of being crime ridden and not a place to visit. From that beginning we greened the streets, cleaned the sidewalks, instituted the ambassador program, put up banners and lights. We began to study the downtown, the economics, zoning and the incentives to bring quality tenants to the streets. We studied store front designs, street venders, and marketing the Stamford Downtown as a 24 hour city. We created events: Art in Public Places, Alive at Five, Pops in the Park, French Market, A Grand Summers Night, Arts, Crafts and Blues on Bedford, Heights and Lights and Stamford’s own Parade Spectacular which was selected as one of the top 100 public events in the country. With all this and its live performances, multiplex theaters, its restaurants and clubs millions of people have come to enjoy Stamford Downtown. Also, over the past 15 years we have seen many new additions to the downtown: Park Square West, Avalon Grove, Avalon Greyrock, Archstone on Bedford St, a Multiplex theater, the renovations to the Palace theatre, Target, Burlington Coat, Marriott Courtyard Hotel with Stamford’s only restaurant rated Excellent by the New York Times, napa & company, and of course that “small” investment banking company whose had what seems like 15 different names over the past years, UBS. With all of this and the continued effort of property owners in the downtown the DSSD can proudly boast a new grand list valuation of over $1.25 billion dollars. This represents 11% of the Grand List for the entire City on a mere 1% of the land. A feat we should all be very proud of. But with all this Stamford Downtown will continue to evolve with new tenants and developments. To see this future one must just look to: Trump Parc, Park Square West Phase II and III, the Ritz Carlton Hotel and Condominiums, Tresser Square, the rejuvenation of the Stamford Town Center and let’s not forget the new “small” investment banking company rising from ground as we speak, the Royal Bank of Scotland. We wish all these projects enormous success for they will pave the way to our future. With these and other projects the DSSD will continue its efforts to make Stamford the premier place to live, work and enjoy all that this extraordinary city has to offer.

Downtown Celebrates Its Two Oldest Print Shops-Rapid Press and Goodway Printing & Graphics

Thirty-seven years ago, in 1970 to be exact, GoodwayPrinting and Graphics, located at 135 Bedford Streetopened its doors for business. Twelve years ago, in1984, Lou Aita purchased the business and oriented hisfirm towards the communication needs of Stamford’s many companies and corporations.“The influx of corporations to Stamford has helped this business thrive,” says Lou, whoplans to be open for business in the downtown for the next 37 years to come.

“What sets Rapid Press apart from all other downtownprinters is its excellent customer service,” says HillaryHauman, part owner of Rapid Press, located at 555Summer Street. Bill Fishman and Hillary have beenoperating business in Stamford downtown for over 27 years

and their commitment to the community is paramount. Hillary, a Stamford resident for15 years, explains, “We are here for Stamford, we take a special view and try to providecustomers with the very best service.”

We applaud these businesses for their loyalty but equally important, for being asuccessful part of Stamford downtown.

  • Ferrante, if you’ve not yet discovered it, is a chic newrestaurant located at 191 Summer Street. The restaurant’satmosphere is very reminiscent of the finest New YorkCity dining venues. With itsbeautiful French doors, white table clothes and aromaticbouquets of fresh flowers towering over the bar and sideboards, this 85 seat northern Italian restaurant has becomean immediate magnet to those in the know in StamfordDowntown.

The restaurant is named after co-owner, Nick Campbell’sgrandmother, Helen Ferrante, whose northern Italiancooking is from the 16th century school of Catherine DeMedici with an emphasis on lighter cooking and freshness.Open seven days a week from 11:30am to 11:30pm,Ferrante also offers a private room for up to 80 people.Don’t miss the signature drink of the house, Bellini’s(made with fresh peach nectar with sparkling wine), whichis inspired by Harry’s Bar at the Hotel Cipriani in Venice.
