When the first Conquistado-res arrived on Fuerteventura in the 15th Century, they en-countered the local inhabi-tants (Mahos) almost com-pletely nude. “Males only had a hairy goat or sheep skin that was fixed on the men’s back and women addi-tionally had two extra pieces – one in the front and one in the back – which were fixed at the waist and reached till their knees. Pieces of skin were connected to each other by threads of finely cut leather. They had no shoes and walked the island on bare feet.” (Bontier y Lever-rier. 16th Century)When the immigrants from mainland Spain arrived, they introduced the industrial way of leather tanning. The first references to this acti-vity are an agreement dated 21st January 1607 in which the territory of Fuerteventura was split in two areas for the collection of skins and the preparation of leather goods. The practice stayed very much the same till the 1950’s

Cuando los primeros con-quistadores llegaron a Fuer-teventura en el siglo XV, se encontraron con los habitantes locales, (los Majos), casi com-pletamente desnudos. “Los hombres solamente vestían una piel de pelo de cabra o de oveja fijada a la espalda y las mujeres llevaban dos piezas adicionales a las de los hom-bres, una en la parte delantera y otra en la parte trasera, que se fijaban a la cintura y les llegaba hasta las rodillas. Las piezas de piel estaban unidas unas con otras mediante he-bras de fino cuero. No llevaban calzado y recorrían la isla des-calzos”. (Bontier y Leverrier, siglo XVI). Cuando llegaron los inmigrantes de la Espa-ña peninsular, introdujeron el modo industrial del curtido del cuero. Las primeras refe-rencias a esta actividad es un acuerdo datado el 21 de Enero de 1607, en el que el territorio de Fuerteventura se dividía en dos áreas para la recolección de pieles y la elaboracion de los productos de cuero. Esta práctica se mantuvo prácti-camente igual hasta los años 1950, debido a los limitados recursos existentes en Fuerte-ventura para desarrollar la tec-nología del curtido de cuero. El agua era un elemento crucial en la actividad del curtido y se extraía del subsuelo manual-mente, con molinos y más tar-de con motores.

EN FuERTEVENTuRAAls die ersten Konquistadoren im 15. Jahrhundert nach Fuer-teventura kamen, trafen sie auf die einheimische Bevölkerung (Mahos), die fast völlig nackt waren. „Männer hatten nur ein haariges Ziegen- oder Schafs-fell, bei den Männern auf dem Rücken getragen, und die Frauen zusätzlich zwei Teile - eines auf der Vorderseite und eines auf der Rückseite - die an der Taille befestigt waren und bis an die Knie reichten. Fellstücke wurden miteinander durch schmale Lederbänd-chen verbunden. Sie hatten keine Schuhe und gingen auf nackten Füßen über die Insel.”(Bontier y Leverrier. 16. Jahrhundert)Als die Einwanderer aus dem spanischen Festland anka-men, führten sie das indust-rielle Gerben von Leder ein. Die ersten Hinweise auf diese Tätigkeit findet man in einem Vertrag vom 21. Januar 1607, in dem das Gebiet von Fuer-teventura in zwei Bereiche für die Sammlung von Häuten, und der Herstellung von Leder-waren unterteilt wurde. Diese Praxis blieb sehr ähnlich bis in die 1950er Jahre, wegen der begrenzten Möglichkeiten auf Fuerteventura zur Weiter-entwicklung der Gerbereitech-nik. fibres for baskets and bags. At that time palm leaves and reed were used mostly. The colonisation of the Ca-nary Islands brought new transformation and manu-facturing technologies. There are essentially two techniques: twisting and the spiral technique. The reed plants (Juncus acutus Link) were dried for about two weeks, then crushed to get a flexible fibre or cut longitudinally in two. The crushed fibres were used for making sof-ter baskets using the spi-ral technology and the cut fibres were used to make rigid baskets.Only the central stalk of palm leaves (Pírgano) was used as it had the right strength for medium-sized baskets. They were cut lon-gitudinally in two or in four after they were immersed in water for a couple of days. Coarse baskets were made of half-stalks using stan-dard twisting techniques.The historical demand of baskets on Fuerteventura was created by agricultural and fishing activities, do-mestic use and by the cons-truction and chalk industry. Las plantas de caña (Jun-cus acutus Link) se se-caban durante aproxima-damente dos semanas, después se aplastaban para obtener una fibra flexible o se cortaban lon-gitudinalmente en dos. Las fibras trituradas se uti-lizaban para hacer cestas más suaves utilizando la técnica en espiral y las fi-bras cortadas se utilizaban para hacer cestas rígidas. De las hojas de palma so-lamente se utilizaba el tallo central (Pírgano), ya que tenía la fuerza necesaria para poder elaborar ces-tas de tamaño mediano. Se cortaban longitudinal-mente en dos o en cuatro después de sumergirlos en agua durante un par de días. Las cestas gruesas se elaboraban con tallos medianos utilizando técni-cas de torsión estándar. CORRALEJO bedeutet der “kleinste Stall”, wo das Vieh gehalten wurde. Es ist ein altes Fischerdorf mit einem modernisierten Ortskern. Es war das erste Urlaubs-ziel auf Fuerteventura, das touristisch entwickelt wurde, und ist immer noch eines der belebtesten Touristenzentren der Insel, tagsüber und wäh-rend der Nacht. Sie können Corralejo in 3 Hauptbereiche einteilen: die Altstadt mit der kleinen Musik-Plaza, Calle La Iglesia und Muelle Chico beherbergt viele Bars und Restaurants, die Ortsmit-te, mit seiner Hauptstraße und einer Handvoll kleiner Nebenstraßen, wo viele Ge-schäfte, gemütliche Bars, fei-ne Restaurants sind, und wo Sie auch die Einkaufszent-ren La Menara und das neue Las Palmeras finden. Weiter dann der Südteil von Corrale-jo, mit dem Einkaufszentrum El Campanario, wo regelmä-ßig Kunsthandwerks-Märkte und Live-Musik geboten wer-den. Das Nachtleben beginnt am Einkaufszentrum Atlan-tico Sol mit Umgebung (im Ortszentrum) und verläuft weiter bis zur Disco Waikiki als Apotheose.

CORRALEJO means “the smallest corral” where live-stock was kept. It is an an-cient fishing village with a modernised town centre. It was the first holiday destina-tion on Fuerteventura to be developed and still is one of the busiest tourist areas on the island, during the day and during the night. You may split Corralejo into 3 main areas: the Old Town with the Music Square, Calle La Iglesia and Muelle Chico are host to many bars and restaurants; the cen-tre of the town where you have the main street with a handful of short side streets that con-tain many shops, cosy bars, fine restaurants and where you also find the Shopping Centres La Menara and the new Las Palmeras; and then the South of Corralejo where you have last but certainly not least, the Shopping Centre El Campanario where they regu-larly have craft markets and live music. Nightlife starts at Shopping Centre Atlantico Sol and surroundings (in the very centre of town) and gradually spreads out to the Waikiki Dis-co as the apotheosis.

Any-body who made the step to Fuerteventura – or another foreign location – knows that letting go became a perma-nent companion, in the past and maybe today still is. You leave behind the usual life, family, friends, job, home and the surroundings that you got accustomed to for a journey into another world. Attitude is everything, as the challenges are multiple and complex, most of the time. Issues which you never an-ticipated emerge, situations that you never experienced will call upon you. And so it can happen that, when stick-ing to the usual procedures and structures, your journey might become rather bumpy. However whatever the out-come, you will have learned and built up experiences that

Has dejado atrás tu vida ha-bitual, la familia, los amigos, el trabajo, el hogar y todo el entorno al que estabas acostumbrado para viajar a otro mundo. La actitud lo es todo, ya que los desafíos, la mayor parte del tiempo, son muchos y complejos. Surgen cuestiones que nunca antes te habías planteado, apare-cen situaciones que nunca antes habías experimenta-do. Y puede suceder que, mientras te estas acostum-brando a los procedimientos y estructuras habituales, tu viaje se vuelva algo acciden-tado. Sin embargo, indepen-dientemente del resultado, habrás aprendido y acumu-lado experiencias que nunca podrías haber aprendido de un libro. La experiencia, ya sea positiva o negativa, si-gue siendo una experiencia que te llevará más adelante en tu camino de la vida.Llevamos inconscientemen-te con nosotros muchas de nuestras experiencias, a ve-ces de un pasado lejano, en lugar de haberlas asimilado.

Jeder der nach Fuerteventura oder auf eine andere Insel / in ein an-deres Land ausgewandert ist weiß, dass das Loslassen ein ständiger Begleiter war und teilweise auch noch nach Jahren ist. Man lässt sein ganzes bisheriges Leben zurück, gibt Arbeitsplatz und Wohnung im vertrauten Ort auf, lässt Familie und Freun-de zurück und begibt sich auf die Reise in eine neue „Welt“. Auf die Einstellung kommt es an, denn nicht immer ist diese Reise eine einfache. Sie bringt Dinge mit sich, die man vorher nicht planen konnte, man muss sich auf Dinge einlassen, die man vorher nicht kannte. Wird nun an der gewohnten Struk-tur von zu Hause festgehal-ten, kann es passieren, dass diese Reise an manchen Stellen und im wahrsten Sin-ne etwas steinig wird. Aber wie auch immer diese Reise ausgehen mag, es wurden Erfahrungen gesammelt, die man sich nicht erlesen kann. Die Erfahrung, ob nun positiv oder negativ, ist und bleibt eine Erfahrung und nur sie bringt uns im Leben weiter.Erlebte Dinge, die oft schon lange Zeit hinter uns liegen werden im Leben unbewusst mitgeschleppt, anstatt be- und verarbeitet zu werden. Sie bremsen, hindern daran

Or our Ego jeopardises our ability to rely on intuition or to listen to our hearth. Too many times we are occupied with grooming about old issues and are sticking onto them, instead of letting them go and free ourselves.If for instance I always had a dream of studying a particu-lar job, then I could groom for the coming years that I am too old, too sick or not having enough spare time

Martina Mikoleizig-Tatsch, who was active as a business development trainer for many years, had a near-death experience. After this event she received, albeit unwanted in the beginning, the gift of healing – amongst other gifts. Her standard daily life changed into an internationally recognised activity as a medi-um and a healer. Aunque se trate de la capital de Fuerteventura, no tiene ese carácter estresante al que estamos acostumbrados en las ciudades de nuestros lugares de origen. Para ir de comprar está lógicamente el Centro Comercial LAS RO-TONDAS (mapa, F12), que dispone de aparcamiento subterráneo. Algo escondida en una calle lateral esta la panadería alemana MIKE’S CANASTA DEL PAN (mapa, G14) con diferentes tipos de pan alemán, pasteles y terrinas. Pero si lo que pre-fieres es ir de tiendas por la calle, entonces te sugerimos caminar por la Avenida 1º de Mayo (ref. D14-G14) y por la Avenida Secundino Alonso (ref. E13-I13). Allí encon-trarás una mezcla de tiendas, bares, restaurantes y bancos. Spirit te desea un interesante día en Puerto del Rosario.

I drive a lot on Fuerteventura roads, for business and for pleasure, and every time when I enter Jandía and approach those statues of children, look-ing into the sky, I get a sense of fascination. Their facial expres-sion and body language invite you to hold on, watch them standing there and become aware of feelings of timeless-ness and introspection. And because these statues gene-rate the same or similar sensa-tions with many people, they truly became emblematic for the South of the island, if not for the entire Fuerteventura.As I have used my pictures of this creation, realised by Lisbet Fernandez, at many occasions,I decided to visit the creator who has her workshop in Costa Calma and write about her and her work.Lisbet and her husband Ra-fael Gómez González, came from Cuba, some 9 years ago. Both are certified artists from the School of Arts of Habana,

Ich fahre viel auf Fuerteven-turas Straßen, geschäftlich und zum Vergnügen, und je-des Mal, wenn ich nach Jan-día komme und diese Statuen von Kindern, in den Himmel blickend, sehe, bekomme ich ein Gefühl der Faszination. Ihr Gesichtsausdruck und ihre Körpersprache laden ein, an-zuhalten, Sie dort stehen zu sehen und sich der Gefühle von Zeitlosigkeit und Insich-gekehrtheit hinzugeben. Und weil diese Statuen die gleichen oder ähnliche Empfindungen bei vielen Menschen hervor-rufen, sind sie wirklich Sinnbild für den Süden der Insel, wenn nicht für das gesamte Fuerte-ventura geworden.Da ich meine Fotos dieses Kunstwerks, von Lisbet Fern-andez realisiert, bei vielen Gelegenheiten herzeige, be-schloss ich, die Künstlerin, die ihre Werkstatt in Costa Calma hat, zu besuchen und über ihre

Conduzco mucho por las carreteras de Fuerteventura, tanto por negocios como por placer, y cada vez que entro en Jandía y me aproximo a las estatuas de los niños, mirando al cielo, siento fascinación. Su expresión facial y su lenguaje corporal invitan a pararte y a contemplarlos allí de pie y a darte cuenta de los sentimien-tos de la atemporalidad y de la introspección. Y el que estas estatuas generen las mismas o similares sensaciones en mucha gente, ha hecho que

Cuba. Rafael is specialised in creating realistic sculptures, like the ones in bronze you can see in Morro Jable. In 2005 the Town hall of Pájara invited them for a local art project “Ruta de las Esculturas”. After Lisbet participated in the Art exhibition “ARCO 2006” in Ma-drid, they came to Fuerteventu-ra where she created the group of children as part of the a.m. project. Description of the group of sculptures “Caminos” (2007): The group consists of 30 indi-vidual sculptures of children – boys and girls – all with a height of about 110cm, made in terracotta, a sort of refractory clay which has been baked at 1200ºC.The children are looking into the sky and their faces repre-sent copies of faces of local children, mostly from Morro Jable and from friends.The name of the creation is “Caminos”, which is Spanish for “ways”, “roads”.Lisbet explains her work like this:“The children represent the starting point of human growth, in which eachchild starts his/her own way

Arbeit zu schreiben.Lisbet und ihr Ehemann Rafael Gómez González, kamen vor rund 9 Jahren aus Kuba. Bei-de sind von der School of Arts von Habana, Cuba diplomierte Künstler. Rafael ist auf realis-tische Skulpturen, wie die, die Sie als Bronze in Morro Jable sehen können, spezialisiert. Im Jahr 2005 lud das Rathaus von Pájara sie für ein lokales Kunstprojekt „Ruta de las Es-culturas“ ein. Nachdem Lis-bet an der Kunstausstellung „ARCO 2006“ in Madrid teil-genommen hatte, kamen sie nach Fuerteventura, wo sie die Gruppe von Kindern erstellte im Rahmen des o.g. Projekts. Beschreibung der Skulpturen-gruppe “Caminos” (2007):Die Gruppe besteht aus 30 einzelnen Skulpturen von Kin-dern - Jungen und Mädchen - alle mit einer Höhe von ca. 110 cm, in Terrakotta, einer Art von Schamotte, die bei 1200ºC ge-brannt wurde.Die Kinder schauen in den Himmel und ihre Gesichter repräsentieren Gesichter ein-heimischer Kinder, vor allem aus Morro Jable, und auch von Freunden.Der Name des Werkes ist “Caminos”, Spanisch für „Wege“ oder „Straßen“.Lisbet erklärt ihre Arbeit wie folgt:

Morro Jable has a lot of charm to offer: the sea-side prome-nade, pedestrian streets and amazingly realistic bronze statues. The restaurant MAT-TARELLO offers Italian flavours, culinary art and passion within a unique marine environment. Please pay a visit to the harbour where the local government has installed a “Turtle farm” as part of a long-term project to re-intro-duce turtles on Fuerteventura. Turn right on the roundabout in the harbour. Very close to it at the quay in front of the spacious bar/restaurant COFRADIA you can watch enormous sting rays swimming by. SPECTACULAR!
