THE NICE EXPRESS 2

Teaching life skills to school children shapes them holistically and enables them to develop self-management abilities, needed to succeed in the industry, writes Sidharth Tripathy

Research done at Harvard University in 2011 suggests that adults with important life skills are likely to be happier, professionally more successful, and enjoy a higher quality of life than those having only academic knowledge. Even though results of school education is typically judged by scores based on subjects, but it is essential life skills that give one a definitive edge in their personal and professional lives. And this is why, life skills must be incorporated into the school curriculum.

In the current education system, school children are given rigorous lessons of subjects, and yet what they learn is largely factual and does not prepare them for the real-world challenges that they eventually have to face in the job market. Beyond classrooms, decisions need to be made every day using limited information, which often has a strong human element. A fact-based education cannot prepare children to thrive in a world where decisions involving people must be constantly made, and this is where life skills come into their rescue. Unfortunately, most school children spend their time memorising academic subjects that leave them grossly unprepared for real-world challenges.Need to teach to school children

Schools these days impart knowledge on a lot of factual information, without posing much emphasis on skills other than

reading, writing and calculating. Hence, they face a skill gap when they venture into the industry.

The earlier, life skills are introduced in the school curriculum, the better it is because various study reports have shown that the human brain primarily hardwires itself between the ages 6 to 16. Since most children between this age group go to school, it is the best place to learn life skills. Children who acquire life skills in this age, absorb them quickly and apply them appropriately in the real world. Unlike facts that can be memorised and parroted, life skills are coded into the brain and they influence the overall behaviour of individuals.Open up various opportunities

Life skills being holistic and integrative, enable ordinary children to become ideal citizens, exceptional professionals, and balanced individuals.

What defines the current state of schooling

Today in schools, children are immersed in subjects and hardly get exposed to life skills as part of their curriculum. For the few who do, do so randomly and in an unstructured format. In short, life skills today are relegated to the background of school curricula even though they have the greatest potential to produce successful life outcomes.

Benefits of life skillsThe current state of

the education system hardly teaches students how to manage themselves and the world around them. Life skills can help students develop the ability to ‘self-manage’ as well as learn leadership skills. Solid self-management abilities are

more essential than ever before because they help individuals tackle and overcome several day-to-day challenges. In their absence, students may waste time and be ineffective in following through with plans. Besides, life skills teach teamwork, empathy, and ethics – each of which is imperative to make society more prosperous and equitable. What students must be taught

in schoolsSchools prepare students

to become individuals, professionals, social units, and in an increasingly globalised world, global citizens. Excelling in these roles demands proper tackling of real-life situations, and because most schools do not teach students how to shine in real-life situations, they fail in preparing them for these roles.

Life skills are unique since they cannot be learnt by memorisation; rather can only be obtained while handling real-life situations. Therefore, a child who is taught economic life skills is perfectly capable of accompanying his or her parents to the marketplace and becoming an active shopper instead of an observer. New-age life skills teach children how to use social media to their advantage and how to be productive in the virtual world.

School curricula have remained largely unchanged for nearly five centuries, but during the same period, the human brain has massively evolved. For this reason, there is an urgent need to equip children with life skills as, without them, they will be unable to lead and manage the 21st-century world, which awaits them in the years ahead.

Teaching your children only about school subjects will not make them job-ready, here is why life skills are essential

Globally, 69% of Australian universities saw improvements in their ranks, suggesting international students’ uncertainty about studying in the US and UK

Calcutta University (CU) has topped among the state-run universities in the recent QS India Rankings 2020, securing 11th rank, followed closely by Jadavpur University (JU) at 12th position. This has placed CU only a tad lower compared to the central varsities such as the IITs and IISc.

In the world rankings too, CU is ranked at 27th position, reflecting the university’s high quality of education.

Following the rankings, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted, “I'm happy to share with you that as per QS India Ranking 2020, University of Calcutta and Jadavpur University have secured first and second positions respectively among all government universities in India. My heartiest congratulations and best wishes to all.”

The Indian Institute of

Technology Bombay (IITB) continued to dominate the QS India Rankings 2020, holding first position in both academic reputation and employer reputation. Second rank also remained unchanged with the Indian Institute of Science (IISC) Bangalore retaining its second position in the rankings.

IIT-Delhi (IITD) has moved up from fourth position last year to third rank while IIT Madras switched positions and moved to fourth rank in 2020. IIT Kharagpur (IITKGP) retained its spot at fifth rank, as did the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) in sixth position. The University of Delhi (DU) has come up the ranks securing seventh rank from its eighth spot last year.

Australia move up the rankings

Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has retained its top spot for the eighth consecutive year in the 2020 QS World University Rankings. Following MIT, the top five institutions included

Stanford University, Harvard University, University of Oxford, and the California Institute of Technology.

However, the UK recorded its third-worst performance in the rankings this year with the average rank of the 84 ranked UK institutions decreasing by 12.6 ranks. While the University of Cambridge secured its lowest position ever (at 7th rank), the University of Oxford shot up one spot to 4th rank.

With 69% of Australian universities going up the ranks, these universities are reaping the benefits of the international student community’s uncertainty about studying in the US and UK.

Asia among the topIn Asia, the top two

varsities – National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University – shared 11th spot in the rankings. China with 19 of the world’s top 200 research universities continues to register an impressive growth trajectory, up from 12 in 2016.

The Board has said that class X and XII examinations will be done as per the CBSE syllabus that has been uploaded on the website for students

Students, who will be appearing in class X and XII examinations of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in 2020, must follow the syllabus recommended by the Board. In a recent circular, the governing body has instructed candidates that they must not completely rely on the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) books, and should prepare for the CBSE 2020 exams as per the syllabus prescribed by the Board.

This decision has been made because certain texts in NCERT

books mention that they are not applicable for examination or assessment. “It has been brought to the notice of CBSE that in these books, at certain places, it is mentioned that a particular part of the book is not for the purpose of examination/assessment. Similar instructions are given for the information/question provided in boxes also,” reads a statement by the CBSE.

“It is for information of all concerned that this

information is not applicable for the students who will be appearing in the class X and XII examinations conducted by CBSE in 2020,” the statement added. The Board has advised students, teachers and even the parents to go through the CBSE class X and XII syllabus, which has been uploaded by the governing body on its website since “examination/assessment will be done based on the syllabus provided by CBSE and not as given in the NCERT books.”

CBSE asks students to follow the recommended syllabus and not NCERT books

Indians upskill through short-term courses and self-teaching

Over two-third of learners from India, China, Brazil and Hispano America have engaged in upskilling in the past couple of years as against only 31% in the US and 24% in the UK, said the Global Learner Survey. Learners from these countries either enrolled in short-term courses or took to self-teaching to gain knowledge on the latest trends and technologies.

According to the survey, 78% of Indians believe that students today have the advantage of using technology to support their learning, which makes the experience easier and more fun. Globally, 76% of people think that in the next decade, college students will resort to online courses and 67% believe that digital learning will define primary and secondary education as well. Besides, almost 70% of people in the US, UK and Europe, and 90% in China believe that artificial intelligence (AI) will have a positive impact on education. 74-79% of people across the world believe that smart devices and social media platforms including

YouTube will become a primary learning tool.

The survey also showed that 91% of Chinese, 85% of Americans and 76% of Indians believe that universities in their respective countries must focus on teaching new-age STEM/tech skills to train students for the job market. However, globally, 78% of people also think that developing soft skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity offer them an edge over machines and automation.

Globally, 81% said that learning will shift to a more “do-it-yourself” (DIY) or self-taught mindset as people get older. To reskill themselves for work, 42% learners in the US and 50% in China and India said that they resorted to self-teaching by using the internet. Although 80% of learners in the US, Europe and Australia cited referring to online tools or doing professional courses to upskill themselves, 79% of Indians said they mostly relied on self-learning.

“India, along with China is the market where parents do not expect the educational systems to do everything for them, but actually play a large role in

supplementing their children's education. This includes hiring tutors, consultants or offering English classes to help kids succeed or get admitted to college,” read the survey report.

While 68% of global learners think that a college degree is not necessary to succeed academically, only 22% of Indians agree with the same. Globally, 39% of college-goers said that they would prefer vocational training instead of formal college education, and 15% said they would go straight to work after leaving school.

“Gig jobs, unconventional careers, tech disruption and lifelong learning have ushered in the talent economy. Now more than ever, learners understand the need for lifelong education,” said John Fallon, chief executive, Pearson, which conducted the survey.

He added, “People are meeting the demands of this new world of work by taking control of their own learning. Now, technology and innovation are giving educators, governments and companies the greatest opportunity in human history to rise to the occasion and improve lives through education.”

Indians outshine the US and UK in upskilling, says a survey

Job seekers and employers are encouraged to perform their verifications when applying for or accepting employment offers

Civil aviation minister Hardeep Singh Puri launched a job portal for aspiring candidates and existing employees in the aviation sector.

The portal aims to provide a common platform for job seekers to register their job interests across various civil aviation sub-sectors. Prospective employers, who have completed their KYC under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs MCA-21 database would be eligible to register themselves on the portal.

"Aviation jobs portal is an initiative to harness the growth potential of the aviation sector to contribute to employment and re-employment in skilled aviation jobs in India. Both candidates and employers would be able to access a wider choice. Candidates will be able to seek job opportunities matching their profiles. Employers will be able to shortlist those suitable to

serve their HR requirements as per their company policy through an online medium,” said Hardeep Singh Puri.

“Through this portal, the Ministry is facilitating the job aspirant and employer to reach out to each other through a readily accessible medium. Care has been taken to safeguard candidates from fake companies. Companies would carry out their due diligence on the credentials and experience of job aspirants as per their established procedures. The public and private sector companies from Airlines/ Airports/ Cargo/Ground Handling/ MRO/ Aviation Training and other sub-sectors are encouraged to use this facility and employ maximum possible candidates registering on this portal,” said secretary, civil aviation.

Educationist RL Raina shares his insights into how universities can make students job-ready

India has been known as a prime location for education and it continues to reign in its position as a contributor of brilliant minds towards the global job market. The service sector is mushrooming at an increasing pace and adjusting in major chunk of population who draw their livelihood from various opportunities offered in the private organisations, encompassing IT and corporate sector. Consequently, this demand for apt candidates rises with an increase in the number of positions.

India lacks greatly in the rate of employability. One needs to track the evolution of talent acquisition to find an answer to the drought of apt manpower. Talent acquisition has steadily evolved with employers now linking it to a path to monetary success – a strategic and competence driven business function.

Reports say that 95% Indian technical/non-technical graduates are unemployable, giving rise to an industry-institute gap. It is implied and proven that institutes fail to train fresh graduates with the suitable skills required by the industry. A recent report by Capgemini, reveals that a major French firm that employs over a lakh Indian engineers said that majority of this workforce cannot imbibe the required emerging skill-set and 60-65% of them are not trainable. Here are a few core elements that B-schools can implement in their curriculum to make students job-ready:

Enhancing soft skillsInculcating and improvising

the standard soft skills such as communication, leadership, collaboration and time management is essential as these cement one’s position in the organisation. Since soft skills have gained importance in an employer’s mind, eminent B-schools prominently promote them. Their curriculum often warrants the presence of soft skills activities including presentations, debates and other tools.Internships and part-time jobs

Degrees and grades may be important, but prior experience in the respective field is mandatory. This will not only expand one’s subject knowledge but also add an edge over novices who have nearly no experience. B-schools encourage students to opt for internships, by making it a grade-based part of the curriculum. This, in turn, creates a host of students who understand the practical implementations of their job role.Expertise in innovative electives

One should be clear of the basics of the subject that he/she is specialising in, and also lookout for ways to challenge the older tropes to create newer avenues. Technical students need to stay updated with the latest technologies and software, and vice versa for other electives. B-schools are also encouraging newer job roles to be created by introducing innovative electives.

Industry-veterans as facultyIndustry experts working as

visiting faculty and guest lecturers can supplement learning. This brings a new lease of life into the curriculum as these industry veterans bring their wealth of knowledge and expertise to groom students and make them job-ready. Apart from that, the

growth of seminars and group sessions are also emboldening the preparedness of students.

Introducing vocational courses

Since vocational and technical studies have not been given the importance that is required, a change of perspective is needed to promote vocational studies as an important component. Colleges need to be encouraged to offer vocational and tech-oriented programmes with various combinations of any three subjects including English, Economics, History, Geography, Philosophy, Psychology, Computer Science, Information Technology, Mechanical Sciences, Healthcare, Electrical Sciences, Environment, Arts, Hindi, Urdu, Regional Languages, Banking, Agricultural Finance, Agricultural Marketing and many subjects from various disciplines. This would hone their skills to create a job-ready persona, attracting the right kind of interest from the hiring segment.
